In Biarritz today eating all the sea’s foods:

Now that Tapa is back up and running—let’s get to those photos:
The arroz con pulpo y calamares from La Castela on Friday night:
That meal started with a plate of iberico game for MrsLL and a plate of cockles for me:
We stopped in at the big market outside the Plaza Mayor, and could have spent a lot more time there. It had all manner of little tapas stands.
After Madrid, we went to Elciego in the Rioja wine region. We stayed at the Hotel Marques de Riscal and ate at the restaurant there:
After that was San Sebastián—I think that’s the highlight of the trip. I can do a more exhaustive review of places another time, but here’s a feel:

Cruz should do it. Nothing will freak out the Trump voter like having candidates debating in Spanish.

And, I am not sure that the people as sovereign is as enshrined as it is here. To a large extent, the UK could stop recognizing civil rights of all kinds and little could be done about it.
I think your hypothetical about civil rights is somewhat less true now than it was ten years ago, as the judiciary as a separate branch has become more established. But the point remains fundamentally correct--the referendum was always problematic from a constitutional standpoint. The British constitution has never had a referendum mechanism. This case shows the problems with fitting it into the British constitutional structure.
A real question being asked right now is what role the Lords still has to play in lawmaking. It's becoming a real constitutional clusterfuck (that's a legal term).

I've been using Safari on iPhone during the current Dark Ages of Tapa. Works pretty well and picture posting seems to work okay too.
How do you post photos? I can't figure that out.

I don't speak a lick of Spanish, which is a bit of a hindrance here, but "es uno de los nostros"!
And of course:

Yeah, but no--my hotel doesn't have the channel that the Premier League app says it's on in Spain. So I need an internet link.
-
Does anybody have a good link to the game that I can use to watch it in Spain?

Yeah--that's a bummer for the first trip for the kids.
Mine are taking their first trip in October. We've definitely got to see the Royal Mews. Depending on what your kids like, the London Transport Museum and the Imperial War Museum may be great picks for them. Both have big things to see (e.g., buses, tanks) that don't require just a whole lot of adult knowledge.

No pictures, since tapa isn't cooperating. I did go with the rice with cephalopods. It was really good. The squid ink really made it.

What is "meloso"? That is the one word I don't understand.
But I like all the other words.

We were sent to La Castela (http://restaurantelacastela.com/) based on a recommendation from a Madrileño we met during some other travels who said it was his favorite restaurant. Take recs from the waiter based on what's good. We were the only tourists there, and it was probably the best meal we had while in Madrid. It's a tapas bar in front, with restaurant in the back. I would say skip the tapas bar to save room. I've sent others who had similar experiences.
Going here tonight on our first night in Madrid. I'll let you know how it goes.

Where are you seeing that? I can book biz and first seats on the flight to LHR both for today's flight and tomorrow's.
I just flew it yesterday, and J was completely full.
And the way BA does it, even frequent-flyer J class is "paid" with all the damned fees they tack on.
-
For those paying attention at home, J-class has been completely full on the BA flight to LHR the last couple of days (and is again tomorrow). And today, they're flying a Super-J configuration (i.e., 86 J seats rather than 52) as BA 190/191. I don't know whether that is a planned substitution to get more J seats or whether it's a maintenance substitution.
But regardless--the load factors in the premium cabins is definitely a positive sign.

God--I had forgotten the horrors of tuna casserole. Or really any casserole that my mother would make.

I'm not real sure I understand that play. It's not like Republicans have been doing really well in special elections this year.
That's also an area where Beto didn't do particularly well in the primary (likely owing to low name recognition). A special election in that district could give Beto a chance to campaign in that region with a focused and energized Dem electorate and improve his name recognition. And if a Dem somehow wins, Beto can get a lot of the credit, upping his buzz and contributions.

If you're a child of the 70's, then any vegetables were disgusting.
It was probably the mid- to late-80's before logistics and trade got to the point where you got a significant amount of fresh produce in grocery stores. Before that, the produce aisle was just that: one aisle. And it was probably half taken up by apples, oranges, bananas, and heads of iceberg lettuce. The rest of it was onions and potatoes and a few other things that might be in season (e.g., strawberries or grapes or cherries, depending on the time of year). As far as vegetables go--if you wanted anything much more exotic than squash or carrots, you were fresh out of luck.
The only brussels sprouts or asparagus or green beans on offer were usually either canned or frozen. And there's a limited set of techniques you can use with canned or frozen vegetables. So yeah--boiled frozen brussels sprouts were common in my house. Fucking canned peas--we had that shit at least twice a week.
I love vegetables now. Asparagus on the grill; brussels sprouts any number of ways; sugar snap peas with just a touch of salt--those are all great. But none of that fresh shit was available when I was a kid.

Sorry, but 650 is right. London:England. Paris:France. Seoul:South Korea.
Not to say that there aren’t other things to see in those countries. But it is to say that those countries are dominated by their capitals in a way that world-city capitals in a way as to make the rest of the countries an afterthought.

Am I right that we are guaranteed to finish ahead of Arsenal is this result holds?
Oh, and fuck the Gooners.

so much this. poch is a good manager and has been great for spurs, but he has shown a few times this year that he believes he is a bit more infallible than his results bear out. 4 years in it's starting to get old listening to him say that they should have won but need more time to build a winning mentality. that starts with making the right team selection in games like this, and he did not by starting lloris and sanchez (and i have been a big sanchez apologist this season).

I remain fascinated how using plain language to predict every stage of this train wreck is “hysteria.”
Predicting that Charlie Strong’s last Texas team was a mess, and could lose to anyone - even Kansas - wasn’t hysteria. It was right.
Sorry that I seem to be one of the few who sees the 1900 storm heading our way and saying “we oughta evacuate the island.” Y’all call it hysteria. It makes you feel better, or something. That’s fine. None of that changes the fact that the storm’s coming, and we’re 4 feet above sea level.
Shit the fuck up, Cassandra, you stupid bitch!

No he isn't. He's arguing that the publication by a non-complicit entity is protected by the First Amendment. And it probably is.
You beg the question in assuming non-complicity.
