The lightning seem like 2000s Ottawa. Dominate the regular season, fold in the playoffs.

Down 3-0 now in the 2nd.

What year was it that the Mariners won 122 games in the regular season, only to lose in the ALDS?  Yeah--feels like that.

  2. I'm sorry, but is that supposed to be some sort of threat?  We need more people to do all the jobs we have here in Austin.  You want to release people here to work and help our economy?  Uh . . . thank you?

  3. That was some serious style to ease into the playoffs.  No backing-in for this team.

The Flames look like they've gotten their shit together the last three games since we beat them.  I don't think I want any part of them.

I'd much rather play the Jets.  They're struggling down the stretch.  But they're struggling so badly that they may not get the 1 seed; that may go to the Preds.

  4. So the news this evening that May is going to work with Labour on a possible solution is a positive outcome.  For one thing, it means a softer Brexit (and possibly no Brexit at all).  And secondly, it makes Corbyn complicit in the outcome and prevents him from just sitting and snipping.

    Blanco Cafe?

I love Blanco Cafe.  Go there and then to Chris Madrid's if you need to overdose on cheddar.

But goddamn--and I know I'm going to regret this (I probably only write it because I've decided that I have way too much rep)--but I really like Alamo Cafe.  Maybe it's the nostalgia from it being there when I was a kid and growing up on its queso, but it can hit the spot.

  6. Let's be real honest about Congress--there is currently only one lane of traffic in each direction that can flow freely.  The left lane is often occupied by people turning left, and the right lane is often occupied by bikes/scooters/people parking/uber dropping-off or picking up.  Removing parking and putting in a real bike/scooter lane removes three of those four causes of right-lane congestion.

And anyway--Congress should be (and is) more of a pedestrian avenue.  Part of the plan that I really like is the removal of the angled parking.

It’s wrong that I would like to have a threesome with Kasie and Nancy P.

    That’s not even a question. I know it’s wrong.

    Ok. Whatever. Hook ‘em.

  8. All I can tell you is that Mrs.LL has been watching Beto on CNN all day. It’s the first time in years CNN hasn’t enraged her. And Maddow tonight—which is apparently stop-down programming in my house—will be all Beto.

    Yeah, gents—I’m getting laid tonight.

  9. For what you're looking for, you might want a place in the Paddington area--that's going to be right there at the station for the Heathrow Express, and Paddington is on the District Line, which takes you down to Wimbledon.

I don't think Trump would be the nominee in 2024, but I do think he will be the king maker. (If he's not in prison, or exiled to Russia)

    1) It's the Party of Trump; it has no platform beyond complete and total fealty to Trump.

    2) As a result of (1), the nomination is Trump's if he wants it.

    3) His narcissism won't allow him not to want it.

I know we've all heard the Cohen testimony and other evidence that Trump didn't want to win in 2016.  And I think that's true.  But what evidence do you see that he wouldn't run for the nomination in 2024 (irrespective of his eligibility)?

  11. It's never too early, right?  The Senate races look mildly interesting--Richard Burr (R-NC) and Rob Johnson (R-WI) are retiring, so that will be open seats that the Dems will be very interested in picking up.  And Rubio (R-FL) and Toomey (R-PA) are up and look like they may be vulnerable.  But Senate incumbents generally don't lose in midterms in which their party is out of power.

Incumbent senators of the out-of-power party don't lose because the midterms generally turn into a referendum on the president and the president's party.  The party out-of-power can do whatever works for each district; it doesn't have to have a national agenda or message beyond "that guy sucks."  It's a good political position to be in.

Which brings me to the big question--what happens in 2022 when you have a Republican Party that has become so personalized around Donald Trump?  Yeah, Republicans can run against "President Beto sucks."  But Democrats are going to be able to run on the platform that "Donald Trump's worse."

And don't tell me that Trump's going to be gone.  He won't be.  His twitter machine will see to that.  And you know that if he doesn't win reelection in 2020, he'll be the Republican nominee in 2024.  So he'll remain very relevant to Democratic (and other) voters in the 2022 midterms.

That's going to be a fun one.
