On IT Youtube, Gerry Just said former Northshore HC and current Rice LB Coach Jon Kay is a name to keep an eye on to replace Choate.

     https://riceowls.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jon-kay/2842

Someone had asked Gerry in the comments if Sark would look at him as a candidate bc he has ties to northshore.  I think Gerry was just answering a question from the comments.

    This is Tom Herman 2.0.

Let's play smash mouth football with QB draws and control time of possession with turtling. It's a bit wild how similar this hire is looking to Herman when you compare the assistant hires and now style of play.

It’s more Charlie Strong than Tom Herman.  Herman was the hottest coaching prospect in the country at the time.  Had won a national championship as an OC and then went on to beat ou and fsu at Houston.  Herman could recruit okay but had no idea how to build a roster.  He beat UGA at Texas and was 1 stupid Todd Orlando 10 man blitz from beating nation champs LSU.  I fucking hate Herman but Mike Elko is fucking Charlie Strong.  A decent DC that doesn’t have a network of coaches, no identity on offense, no idea what he wants to do with his roster, and not inspiring in getting elite talent to campus.  Aggy wishes they hired Tom Herman.

For the life of me I cannot begin to understand why Dindy is still on that roster. That dude needs a fresh start somewhere.

This summer on one of the podcasts, Gerry was talking about Florida high school players and what a good leader and teammate Cedric Baxter was.  Basically said that when he was injured, he was engaged during games, coaching teammates, always at practice.

He the said there was a 5 star DL in Florida that would show up late to practice, leave early, and basically didn’t give a shit about his team.  Guess who he was talking about?

I would expect Texas to lose, to the portal:

    1 QB Murphy

    1 TE Davis

    2 WR Neyor, Cain

4 OL (SGW, Merril, Kirkland, Cajoe are the most likely for varying reasons. They do not want to lose, but may lose, several other back-ups if there's NIL craziness. The only way Cam Williams is leaving is for a giant pile of cash from another major P5 that Texas simply cannot match or doesn't want to match.)

    2 DT Carter, Swanson

2 DE hmm... Akana? Finkley came for academics and is in rotation so doubt he'd leave.  Would hate to lose Tapp as he has athleticism the others don't.  Maybe Vasek? Did he play at all?  He's behind a bunch of dudes and now has to compete with Simmons.  I imagine a "5 star" probably wants to play.

    2 CB/Star  Brice, Guilbeau/Jordan

    2 S  BJ Allen, LTG

I would expect Texas to take, from the portal:

    1 TE

3 WR (they are looking at cream of the crop stuff here, and they may decide to be picky and take 1-2 and see what happens this spring)

    1 DL

    1 LB

1-2 DB (they will take elite DBs only, and apparently Korie Black qualifies)

    For fun, let's speculate...

I was always curious as to what his coaching rolodex actually looks like. He hasn't really been anywhere for a long time and he has a reputation as an asshole.

People will follow an asshole if they think it'll benefit their career, but he's an unproven coach heading into a very difficult situation from an expectations vs reality standpoint.

He doesn't have a rolodex...  that's the problem.  Same issue Strong and Herman had.  I love the fact they fired Jimbo and hired a guy that was big part of that culture.  Now they plan on having Elko police the locker room and expect different results from the players he recruited and coaches while there?  LMAO!  Why fire Jimbo at all.  They blew up what was left of that program to hire a guy that was a part of the downfall to begin with.

  6. I imagine they are pitching Neyor to stick around and compete for AD's spot and if it doesn't work out, he gets his degree and can grad transfer in the spring.  AD has 10 TDs on the year right?  That's a lot of production to entice someone with.  With everything said, Texas is going to be in a position to cherry pick elite transfers from the portal.  No need to bank on a dude that has been injured 3 of the 4 years he has been in college.  I think Texas is going to get some dudes that will be ready to compete on a CFP contending team.  If Neyor shows up in the spring killing it, great.  If not, Texas still needs to get 1-2 portal WRs that are ready to go.

  7. Gerry mentioned Bama are Auburn are going after Terrance Hibler.  If he takes an official visit to Bama, the writing may be on the wall.  Also mentioned Hibler has already visited Texas twice and that if he doesn't visit Bama, probably good news for Texas.  But what a fucking great evaluation by this staff.  Seeing other big programs go after our early offers is a great indicator Sark and recruiting staff know how to evaluate.  Flood flying to see Carter is interesting.  I don't think we do that if there isn't a legit chance of a flip.  Looks like Filsame is likely to flip as they have plans to take an official visit soon.  I think we end it with Filsame, Carter, Black, and 1 of Hibler, Lindsey, or McKinnley.  I'd go with Hibler of the bunch.

  8. He’s learned under two of the best.  He’s also been hired by the best.  Dude can recruit as well as anyone in the country.  Elite skill players want to play for him.  He has an NFL level staff and fantastic evaluators.  Sark is going to win this whole damn thing and we’re going to be a problem in college football for a while.

  9. We are in.  You dudes gotta get the sand out your vaginas.  It will be Mich, Wash, Texas, Bama.   FSU is going to get the shaft here or Bama.  Not sure how the committee will sit there with a straight face after pumping UGA and Oregon being the 2 best teams most of the season and both losing.  They don’t know shit.  It’s easy to explain Bama being out bc they lost head to head.  It’s going to be hard for them to explain how they leave Texas behind.  Also, Bama looked like pure trash last week needing a miracle on 4th and 31 to win their game against a 5-7 Auburn team.

  10. It’s crazy how many advantages aggy had the last few years that have disappeared into thin air.  They could tout SEC, active national championship winning head coach, NFL development, and bag game.  Now they can sell losing to Texas, producing few draft picks last year and this year, and playing for a 7-5 Duke head coach, and not having real NiL like Texas does.

They also see middling Texas victories against KSU, ISU, TCU, and Houston where the Longhorns allowed overmatched opponents to stubbornly hang around. The committee isn’t going to consider injuries.  And yes that’s exactly bullshit beauty contest stuff.

I don’t disagree with any of your metrics, but I’m just saying that there is a very strong chance that if UO beats Washington bad on Friday, they won’t care and the Ducks will make the playoffs. Particularly if Texas doesn’t blow the doors off the pokes. And several of us on this thread are trying to prepare the fan base for that.  But I’ve already been told to stfu. So here we are.

There was nothing middling about beating a ranked KSU, defending big 12 championship team with our back up QB.  People are talking about Oregon’s big win against Oregon state lmao.  KSU would smoke Oregon state.

I have a kid at Oregon. I watch a lot of PAC-12 games.  I also grew up a Horn fan.

If Oregon does what I think they are going to do on Friday, which is put the wood to a Washington team that had every break go their way in the first game, plus Dan Lanning unnecessarily going for it on 4th down and not doing th easy football thing (something Texas fans also have suffered under Sarkisian), and they win by 2+  TDs, y’all will need to absolute demolish Ok. St. to be in the conversation (barring a Michigan, FSU, or Georgia loss). A low scoring single digit win isn’t going to do the trick. It just isn’t. The committee is not going to jump you over an Oregon team that definitively beats an undefeated top 5 team in the CCG.

Rage about it all you want. I will completely give you that the beauty contest is unfair and bullshit. It’s an excellent argument for going to 8 teams. Lanning has been anticipating this and has been very slow to pull starters in blowouts. But be realistic. If it comes down to a beauty contest, your win against Ok. St has to look like Tech and not Iowa State.

Now maybe Penix will go ham and Lanning will shit the bed, but we are different from A&M in being rational about who we are and what we are looking at

Stick to watching pac 12 games.  How about the 38-30 beauty contest against tech.  The only reason Oregon was ahead of us initially bc they throttled a ranked colorado team and a ranked Utah team that were both farces.  With no common opponents, being mid way through the season… strength of schedule didn’t come into play and we also had our back up qb.  It’s going to be totally different.  Is Oregon’s win against a team they lost to going to be better than our road win against #3 Bama? Nope.  Will Oregon have a better strength of schedule? Nope.  Will Oregon have beaten more ranked teams? Nope.  Will Oregon have an advantage in common opponent?  Nope.  You’re simply relying on an eye test.  If Texas wins another game 40-17 or along those lines…. Then I’m not sure the committee will be able to find any reason to keep Oregon in front of us.

The problem is that they need a narrative to support a change (they aren't going to say they just screwed it up and are now fixing it).  While common opponents matter (tech), their guidelines specifically say that margin of victory is not rewarded for common opponents.  While I don't think our performance at tech will be ignored, it's still tough to have us jump Oregon this week when they convincingly beat a ranked OSU in a rivalry game.  And that just leaves the CCG's where they will be playing a top 4 washington while we are playing ~20th OSU.  The week of the initial rankings was right after Oregon beat Utah and OU lost to Kansas (after almost losing to UCF the week prior), making our loss look pretty bad.  If OU had kept rolling, we never would have been ranked below Oregon, ironic that OU shitting the bed has a decent likelihood of keeping us out of the playoffs this year.

Oregon’s best win is an 8-4 Oregon state team.  If we blow out ranked 9-3 okie lite, it will be just as good if not a better win.  Our win at Bama trumps their potential best win against Washington who is scraping by teams.  Beating an average Oregon State team isn’t the reason they will get in ahead of us.  During our game, ABC already started the argument for us by putting up the graphics of our resume vs Oregon.  That wasn’t by mistake.  They want Texas in and there will be a lot of pressure from Disney/ABC to have us in because of all the eye balls we bring and money we bring.  Don’t kid yourself.

Okay, fair enough?  But they’re not gonna change it.  Not with a 24-point win over #16 and probable win against #4. Bitch all you want, but not at me, and stop living in fantasy land.

I’m just a realist. This isn’t a wildass prediction. This is staring you in the face. You know it and everyone on this board knows it, but yet some of you insist on being delusional Aggy.

Your entire premise is flawed bc the committee has already moved teams around ahead of us.  They have had no reason to move Texas until now.  Now we have a common opponent and look good too.  Also, when the rankings came out, we had no idea how long Quinn was going to be out and we’re ranked with our back ok QB.
