  1. the Texas courts will get a hold of it and well... oh shit.....
  2. college? more like ... freshman.... although I never put it up my nose sophomore / junior senior / law school
  3. a different time for me, but suffice it to say, I gave the mountain man smile / smirk / head nod to my principal. that guy yanked my ass into his office the next school day, I think it was friday then a monday. of course I thought I got away with it all weekend because I was stoopid. speaking of being a total fuck up my senior year in HS.... I back door'd my way into Ut Austin through ACC, 24 hours over 2 years, dropped every class I wasn't going to make an A before it showed on my transcript which back in the day was like 2/3 through the semester. I think I had registered and paid for 36+ hours and dropped at least 12. transferred through automatic admissions process for transfers with a 3.0 or higher. those two years at ACC... sheesh, too much booze, weed, magic mushrooms, accidental crack pipe experience, accidental coke laced joint experience, absolutely nuts. but once I was on campus, it was straight and narrow from that point on. and the rest is history, I was an academic badass.
  4. To be clear I’m involved in the writing process but I have not written one single word and the ideas are all his. Only guided him like a tutor or engaged English teacher would, there’s a line you just can’t cross or you do way more damage than good.
  5. I’ve got a 15 year old that’s a gamer and it’s a problem. he totally handles his shit - he’s smarter than his 17 year old brother, his grades are impeccable, all pre-AP or AP classes, more musically and athletically talented, his music resume is already off the charts, but he lacks the extroversion and innate leadership desire and personality - although he’s the only soph in band leadership - and he’s a total nerd / gamer. It’s the only thing he does in his free time. All friend time is online. It’s kinda odd nowadays too because nerd and athletic, good looking and fit aren’t mutually exclusive but even with those traits he’s 100% gamer nerd. And this year I have to figure it out. He’s going to hate me but I’m going to get him off his console this year. Not sure if it’s a job, more gym time, force another hobby, in person time with friends, do the lawn, fuck I dunno but it has to be something. and to me that’s his pre-college app prereqs if that makes any sense.
  6. We have and he wants to go to an in state public school for that reason, unfortunately there’s only one worthwhile state school in Texas and he’s got a better chance to get into Cal and UCSB than UT. Crazy.
  7. He told me, October 1 is early deadlines I can apply later. I laughed. We talked. His eyes got big, he got it. All apps will be in by October 1. @BabaYaga and the rest of you too - y'all are awesome. Totally great to have a place to vent. im trying to be strategic, even being friendly with my ex, this year is going to be a bumpy ride and I definitely want him to be able to coast from December on. Cracking the whip now and helping him do what he truly wants while his frontal cortex says to slack off is the challenge. But 4 months … we’ll make it. shit I almost flunked senior year of HS and I turned out ok. Hell I had the audacity to skip school to go to a high school baseball playoff game where all the principals were there and saw me skipping. I did not give a fuck when they called me into the principal’s office. And that wasn’t the half of it. He’ll be fine.
  8. Done the BVIs twice on a sailing cat it was great. Highly recommend.
  9. I’d climb all over those smothered thighs you know what I’m saying BLT the other day… extra iceberg lettuce - cold and crisp. Buttered sourdough and kewpie mayo. Hickory smoked bacon. One of my comfort foods.
  10. Pasteurization, vaccines, clean public drinking water, sewer systems, fluoride toothpaste, some of the great public health advances in human history. Yeah nah bro, get out of here with that shit.
  11. If you aren’t used to it. I play tennis outside at 5pm two days a week. I spent most of Saturday working outside and half of Sunday too. It wasn’t an issue but I’m acclimated. Over 100 degrees yeah, no way can’t do it. It’ll kill me.
  12. Still by the pool listening to the bugs sing happily and faint sounds far off in the distant - a boat here, kids splashing in a pool over there. Sounds of summer without the sweat and misery. It’s amazing.
  13. Thank you! The hardest part about this summer has been the total change from his SOP.
  14. The fact that school hasn’t started and kids are still lazy shouldn’t be overlooked. This happened every year for 12 years and while senior year starts with college applications it’s still the summer.
  15. Drinking wine by the pool, this shit is fucking glorious.
  16. That’s amazing. I would have lost my fucking mind. Reminds me (not food related) when my second son was born and my sister in law came down to help out and I was gassed, on fumes, needed a nap in the worst way. My then wife asleep in worse shape than me. SiL walks in the door says she’s here to help after she naps because the drive took it out of her. My ex father in law drove her. I fucking unloaded all my pent up wrath on her. She was not amused. She said she was going home. My response? insert “good” gif
  17. @Bozo_Casanova maybe we should hire the counselors but we haven't yet and probably won't. it may be nearsighted.
  18. to be fair to a lot of them, classes haven't started yet so their get in gear motivation is still in free-fly neutral gear for that last 10 days of summer. I get it. just don't be a dick.
  19. Yeah I agree hearing others say "same, same" is HUGELY helpful. on the writing front I can share some success, once he realized I wasn't happy and that he wasn't getting to hang with friends until he did some work, he got to it. not the way I would but he did it. then we worked through two drafts together and I was able to impart some real wisdom on how to write. I think he listened, his demeanor and his second draft surely indicated he listened. not sure anyone has really stopped to teach the young man how to truly write with intent. so I'm taking these essays as a chance to really up his writing skills. @BabaYaga my senior kicks all kinds of ass on the 4 requirements you mention. my 15 year old is good on 1 and 4, probably ok on 2. Appropriate attire.... someone PLEASE HELP .... socks with birkenstocks are killing my eyes!
  20. we have a service but it had been three weeks and they went a bit AWOL on me so I said fuck it I could use the exercise and wanted an excuse to avoid the gym and the courts. cut on the highest setting and still cut 2-3 inches off. I have a couple of heat stressed spots but not much. freaking yard is emerald green in the places that are under 6-8 hours of sun per day.
  21. he's spent all of 3 hours on his primary essay, he'll finish it around the 12-15 hour mark I think, it's also the one that touts his primary resume accomplishment - being in charge of 250 peers as the drum major. he's gotta nail that one imo. anyway, enough but my hooligan.
  22. I agree 100%. I'm venting here, pissed off, etc. but I'm taking it in stride, no yelling, no major shit, just cause and effect, consequences to his behavior. I do think he's far away from actually fucking up his college experience. It's way better to see this now even before school starts than at a critical point when he can lose something he's worked for, or even worse his freshman year of college. The only non-negotiable at this point are his apps and it's the only thing I said I would ground him over. But he wanted to quit work, I convinced him part time, then he did the square root of jack shit for a few days and this weekend. Saw me brushing the pool, adding chlorine, my wife testing the water, he bugged out and went to hang out with friends. later said he was going to do it sunday. I was like, "bro, you can't look at a pool tipping over to the green side and say, I'll do it tomorrow. I checked the chlorine tabs twice this week (we have 2 spots for chlorine) and both times they were empty." On sunday morning I told him I thought quitting was a good idea. He's now got $100 for gas and food for two weeks and his other parent can subsidize if she wants to (she lost her job, is burning through savings, and will take a pay cut so good luck with that). I strategically chose his job with me to be his acute failure/pain point this time around. He had enough savings to pay his subsidy of his car insurance through 12/31 so I took that. He honestly has no idea what's coming in terms of senior year, having a cute girlfriend he wants to keep, and being broke.
  23. I bought in right as it started to lift off (no pun intended, well maybe it was intended) and spent about 2 weeks studying it. I could be wrong but I'm in it for the long haul unless something in the business fundamentals changes. JOBY could lose but I don't think one company will take the whole market. Archer is there, the big companies may get into it too, but JOBY has the backing and the progress to suggest it's going to make a go of it. pre-revenue still (basically) so any run up now is certainly speculative but revenue milestones and profitability milestones still on the distant horizon means it has plenty of room for exuberance imo.
  24. I like liking things too, in New England I’ll go for the clam chowder, east coast oysters and avoid the gumbo and Mexican so I can like what I eat.
