    Getting old sucks

Coming back to the question… I heard someone I respect say that much of life’s really negative emotions originate from a similar source - unmet or failed or missed expectations. for me, I turn 50 in a month. The last five years have been really hard after the decade from 35-45, while stressful to the ninth degree was incredibly rewarding. So I think unmet expectations is a big part of why I have the negative feelings right now. Angst, worry, fear, boredom, frustration, remorse, fatigue, and regret. part of the unmet expectations is realizing that the blue sky opportunities I love so much are quickly fading and I haven’t done half of what I want to do. It’s just an age thing but I don’t have 30 years in front of me to start and grow a business and sell it, or to build a mid sized law firm, or circumnavigate the world on a sailboat, although everyone of those things could still happen but the window is closing and I can see it, 10 years ago it was different, it still felt like I had all the time in the world. my year last year was absolutely one of the worst years of my life, I’m still struggling with some PTSD due to 7 months of illness. So I need to leave space for improvement but that 7 months kinda broke my exuberance and optimism for the future and put a finite limit on what I can be and do in a way nothing else has done. there’s a scene in the weather man that encapsulates part of what I’m trying to say so well. The reductionist experience of considering all the people he could become until all that remains is who he is, the weatherman nails it for me (the last 30 seconds are unnecessary) the narrowing of possibility down to the one thing is what gets me most. I thrive on hope, possibility, options, new beginnings, fresh starts and the blue sky of opportunity. I feel like aging slowly takes a lot of that away, and it really, really gets to me.

I’ve been actively contemplating this very question for a few months. I’m running out the door to do something that provides a nice break from the existential crisis, I’ll come back and answer, tonight or in the morning.

    Getting old sucks

I used to think like that. I mean nothing I can do about it and I have probably 7-8 reasons why it's bothering me at this time that i could go into but bottom line, it bothers me.
  4. that guy is a tool and a blowhard. he rails on fasters, says workouts and calorie restrictions induce autophagy, well so does sleep (as i mentioned above along with exercise) and fasting, and to your point there is a basal rate of autophagy but given the onslaught of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, chronic conditions, etc. it seems to me anything we can do to help our bodies heal and cope is a good thing. calorie restriction is great for autophagy, so is a sustained intermittent fasting (16/8 is a really common daily pattern there are some weekly patterns too), but some folks - like me - don't want to deal with IF on a daily or weekly basis, and I for sure don't like constant calorie restriction - fuck that noise completely, that's gotta be worse than Dante's 7th level - so the alternative I choose is the 3 day fast 3-4x per year. Intense, but short lived, in and out and then back to my regular attempts at a healthy lifestyle with exercise, sleep, diet, destress, relationships and cognitive health as my primary focus, making fasting a few times a year just an "extra on top" of an otherwise intentional plan to pursue wellness. And the published research is emerging but clear and promising that calorie restriction / intermittent fasting / sustained fasting (they are all calorie restrictions) are beneficial to a whole range of bodily functions just like resistance/weight training, HIIT, sprint interval training, zone 2 training with bumps up for extreme bursts, eating green leafies, lots of fruits, whole grains, avoid animal saturated fats, 10 minute walks, 7000 steps a day, etc., etc. But hey, don't forget to hit that like button to help this brother out.
  5. right, but fasting - say 72 hours - increases it significantly. given the onslaught of a modern (poor) diet, pollution, other toxins, there are compelling reasons to increase the intensity and frequency of autophagy through fasting.
  6. autophagy is a known process that occurs when your body is deprived of calories for a sustained period of time. localized autophagy also occurs with exercise and sleep but it's not as systemic as when fasting. the basic jist of it is your body has an innate order of how it produces energy. that order is something like this: - glucose from your most recent meal - glycogen (excess calories from your recent meals) - glucose derived from glycerol (fat) and ketones created by the liver from fatty acids - autophagy begins while in ketosis - primarily provides amino acids so your muscle mass is preserved with that process you have a source of energy and amino acids. but how does your body provide amino acids without food or breaking down your muscle mass? autophagy is the process where by your body targets damaged cells to recycle their component parts for reuse in order to perserve the parts of the body that are functioning properly. worn out immune system cells are destroyed, lining in the gut is recycled, and there are other parts of the body that are part of this process. If you are in autophagy long enough, precancerous cells can be the target. If you go into autophagy deep enough, then gut and immune system stem cells start to activate and prepare for when you do have external nutrients (food) to then rebuild portions of your immune system, gut lining, etc. autophagy / fasting also triggers HGH and BDNF spikes which are hugely protective of the body and brain. the precancerous aspect is simply that the precancerous cells are either damaged or become stressed and marked for destruction in the process of autophagy. there are some lines of research that want to follow this biological process to target and destroy cancer cells so it's not kooky science. it's totally a thing. for more info just google or ask chatgpt to tell you about the metabolic benefits of fasting for 72 hours, including the timeline and benefits for autophagy, increase in HGH and BDNF or something like that.

we can't out run it, only delay it, and then only for a short while. truly sucks.
  8. Not sure we “feel” anything but if the emerging science is correct it could be hugely beneficial from an aging and longevity standpoint. I need at least one more this year. Maybe two. Probably one right before the holidays and one right after. Then back to spring and summer for 4x per year. let me know how it goes. And don’t be worried about breaking a fast there’s no magic in the exact number of hours. If you feel not up to the last 12-24, don’t force it.

  12. so a chainsaw in his hand away from being a fascist got it. watch for it, it'll sneak up on ya.
  13. why the fuck are y'all obsessed with IBRX? it's like a cult here.
  14. I got light sedation for my stellate ganglion block that would be on point for the tube. Herbs that will take the edge off but probably not enough - valerian root or kava (needs to be pure noble strains, there’s some mixes out there that are hazardous). One pill script for Xanax will absolutely do it.
  15. I think the concentrations in vape pens come with a pretty hefty penalty actually. I don’t have the issue anymore but my oldest son (I actually have 3 sons, 2 still live with me) was vaping a lot during Covid and it was bad enough I tried that scare tactic / at least warn him not to have it on him while in a car. Seems really odd to have that high of a penalty. But it’s there.
  16. Your dismissive attitude leaves me feeling a little unsafe. Reported.
  17. Bullshit payments need to stop, schools should pay, salary caps based on divisions, new super league needed, NIL is whatever the kid can make based on his or her image. Just like NFL. But fuck all that we are finally operating with the advantage so fuck it all wild Wild West no changes make it all legal no regulation.
