  1. Orlando and Naivar pulling some Texas recruits...Quay Davis, Brandon Campbell, and now possibly Lake...dang
  2. Mike Roach Stampede part 1 The 2021 recruiting cycle has been one of incredible ups and downs for the Texas staff. For each piece of good news, it seems that Texas faces a bit of bad news. In that spirit, I bring you another round of up and down news. Texas is surging for multiple targets on their board while they appear to be more of a wildcard for some others. As the recruiting class faces a pandemic that could shape it in unprecedented ways, the Texas staff plows ahead in hopes that a strong performance in the fall could change the trajectory of this class. We have so much information this week we've decided to double up on the amount of scoop we drop on Monday morning. In the first part of this week's edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, we discuss the latest in tight end recruiting, new crystal ball picks in favor of the Longhorns, long term recruiting strategy for Texas and much more. WHERE DO THINGS STAND AT THE TIGHT END POSIITON? 2021 TE Landen King (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports) Texas lost a commitment from Landen King on Friday. I spent the weekend digging deeper on the issue and, it sounds like there was really nothing Texas could do. I’ve been critical at times of the Texas staff in this cycle, but I’m not sure anyone could have done anything different to change the situation. King simply felt he made the decision too quickly and sources near him said he felt an attraction to the SEC. Nick Harris will have more on possible tight end options in part two of The Stampede. I mentioned that Georgia and Alabama were two schools recruiting him hard before picking Texas, and Auburn is in that mix as well. The Tigers are thought to be in strong position after landing a commitment from King’s close friend Dematrius Davis. Auburn is also targeting former Texas commit Lake McRee at the position. King is also still considering Texas, and I’m told that Texas still likes him despite the fact that a decommitment leaves some tension on both sides. I’d expect Texas to continue to pursue the Atascocita tight end while looking for other targets at the position. TEXAS SURGING FOR MULTIPLE TARGETS? Four-star cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem(Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports) Late last night I entered a Texas crystal ball pick for four-star Kimball cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem. I’ve spoken in the past about the job Jay Valai and Chris Ash are doing with Ibraheem, and I feel they’ve moved into the lead. Texas is one of the schools Ibraheem was able to visit before the quarantine, and the coaches have been all over him since they arrived in Austin. One of the sources I spoke with in Austin said the Longhorns had Ibraheem very high on the board and viewed him as the player with the most upside at the position in the country. Add in Ibraheem’s relationship with Texas target JD Coffey who is also trending for the Longhorns and there are a lot of things working in favor of the Texas staff. I’ve heard Ibraheem could be closing in on a decision this summer and as soon as the next month or two. Pompano Beach (Fla.) Monarch WR Jaden Alexis (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports) I also entered a crystal ball for Pompano Beach (Fla.) Monarch wide receiver Jaden Alexis. This is a bit more of a projection with a slightly lower confidence score. I’ve heard really strong things about Texas and the speedy wide receiver, and a source I spoke with indicated the Texas staff felt strong about where they stood. My only trepidation is a lack of strong sourcing in Florida. So far, everyone I spoke with out there acknowledged Texas was a school on Alexis’ mind, but they were having a hard time reading him right now. This is one I’m going to enter and monitor closely over the next few months and the story will be how high or how low the confidence score goes. WHERE DOES TEXAS STAND WITH KETRON JACKSON? (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports) Speaking of wide receivers, I’ve been doing some digging on Royse City wide receiver Ketron Jackson. The four-star pass catcher remains quiet, but Texas has been trying to come on since offering in March. The Longhorns are at a bit of a disadvantage with the inability to host visits and Jackson made the rounds to the other schools on his list before the quarantine. In talking with Jackson and those around him, I get the feeling Texas will hang around in this race though it’s tough to get a true read on it. In talking to sources, Arkansas and TCU are the schools mentioned for him the most while Baylor holds strong position (despite having almost a full class at receiver already). The idea I get is that Texas is a bit of a wildcard in this race, and their long-term outlook is almost directly tied to how long Jackson waits on his recruitment and how Texas plays this fall. WHO HOLDS THE EDGE FOR ANDREW MUKUBA? Over the last week I’ve tried to dive in on Andrew Mukuba to determine where things stand with the Austin LBJ safety. He recently released a Top 12, but right now, it sounds like only three schools are a factor in the equation for him. Texas, Clemson and LSU are the ones I hear the most for Mukuba and the leader depends on when and who you talk to. One source I spoke with said Mukuba is tough to nail down because he frequently changes his focus when talking behind the scenes. Chris Ash is working diligently in this recruitment and I’m told that Mukuba has an affinity for him. That said, other schools have been in his ear about instability on the Texas staff. It will be interesting to see Mukuba’s actions once quarantine lifts and he’s able to take visits. TEXAS STILL IN CONTACT WITH COMMITTED PROSPECTS LSU commit JoJo Earle (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports) Fall results are starting to play a big role in the way this recruiting cycle will ultimately unfold. A source I spoke with said the staff understands what’s at stake and feels they have the experience necessary to win this year with the current state of Big 12 turnover. If they do, they feel they might be able to flip some guys down the line or capitalize once the expected wave of decommitments hits this fall. The staff is trying to keep in contact with everyone, and that includes targets that have already made commitments. I’m told that contact with Clayton Smith is running cold since he committed to Oklahoma, but the Longhorns have been able to keep the lines of communication open with LSU commits JoJo Earle and Landon Jackson. Don’t take this to mean that either of those guys are close to decommitting because I believe they are solid in their commitments, but the continued communication could be the difference maker if the Longhorns have a big year. BACKGROUND ON NEWEST TEXAS OFFER The Texas staff made a few offers over the weekend, and one I really liked was Garland Lakeview Centennial DL Ikechukwu Iwunnah. The big defensive lineman is raw, but at 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, he shows some interesting things on film. Iwunnah also competes in track and field where he throws the discus and even triple jumped at an event this year. I’m a big fan of finding athletic big frames on the defensive line and developing them, and that’s what it looks like Texas is targeting here. The Longhorns have been in contact with Iwunnah for about a month before offering and it sounds like the Centennial staff has been pleased by their approach. Mark Hagen is the lead on this recruitment and I’m told Texas is expected to be a front runner. Iwunnah is the teammate of five-star running back Camar Wheaton, but it sounds doesn’t sound like Iwunnah will influence him much. I was told it won’t hurt, but it probably wouldn’t help that much either way. Centennial is loaded with talent this year. Outside of Wheaton and Iwunnah, Lakeview Centennial’s center Ezra Oyetade is another guy with a ton of upside on the offensive line. I’m told the Longhorns have looked into Oyetade as well but they haven’t offered as of yet.
  3. Pretty much all this. Im not concerned about the position. I’m concerned about optics but mostly that we’re doing stupid shit behind the scenes. The auburn and davis shit actually makes me feel somewhat better.
  4. If Wiley builds on his initial promise, and Leibrock pans out in a big way, we could be okay ... but those are big ifs. Brewer: Mediocre. Leitao: Bust Epps: Bust Liebrock: Unproven. Hardly played. Wiley: Showed some potential ... but just 1 reception. (So between him and Leibrock, they have 1 reception total.) Juan Davis: Considered to be a project
  5. We will be fine at TE. Auburn swooped in because of Davis. Dirty motherfuckers, but okay, fine. The decommittment isn't at a position of need and isn't due to the bullshit recruiting tactics of late. We're fine. Sucks, but we're fine. Spend the spot on defense or Oline
  6. That's the current speculation. Davis is good, but I would've thought King would want to stick with Milroe. Especially with how close the two seem.
  7. Yeah, it's gotta be Auburn. Following Davis.
  8. Last month there was smoke around Jaylin Davies, Jamier Johnson, and Jaylin Smith, the California DBs. It appears that Davies is out, but recent reports have affirmed the real interest in Texas from Jamier Johnson and Jaylin Smith. https://247sports.com/Player/Jaylin-Smith-46093610/ https://247sports.com/Player/Jamier-Johnson-46079629/ Johnson: Biggins, a west coast 247 mod affirmed that Texas is in the top group for Jamier Johnson, we're also in his "official top 7" posted in April. Smith: Roach recently did an interview here *I believe*, and he made a comment about Smith being a real candidate to join the class. Some pictures of him working out with Chris Adimora in California as well. It would appear they're working on some combination of Mukuba, Harmon, Smith, and Johnson. Probably 2 spots, but they may take a 3rd from this group if the 3rd isn't Harmon. Also depends on what Ish does.
  9. From Rynoag04, a poster on Aggie 247. There appear to be only 4 changes of significance (I've bolded them). Notable A&M/State of Texas Related Changes in the New Top 247 #10 Tommy Brockermeyer (-1) #11 Donovan Jackson (-1) – Ohio State #16 Ja’Tavion Sanders (-1) – Texas #19 Tony Grimes (-1) #29 LJ Johnson (+2) #32 Terrence Lewis (-15) – Tennessee #36 Savion Byrd (+1) #37 Billy Bowman (+1) – Texas #42 Camar Wheaton (+2) #52 Cody Jackson (+2) – OU #57 Clayton Smith (+4) – OU #67 Shemar Turner (+164) #72 Jojo Earle (-4) – LSU #73 Landon Jackson (-4) – LSU #80 Tunmise Adeleye (+3) – Ohio State #90 Kaidon Salter (-2) – Tennessee #97 Jalen Milroe (-2) – Texas #98 Dematrius Davis (-2) – Auburn #107 Preston Stone (NC) – SMU #112 Reuben Fatheree (+1) #113 Bryce Foster (+1) #117 Eli Stowers (+1) – Texas A&M #118 Tywone Malone (+1) #129 Shadrach Banks (+8) – Texas A&M #132 Marcus Burris (-29) #156 Ketron Jackson (-1) #163 Sawyer Robertson (-4) – Mississippi State #167 Jordon Thomas (-5) – Texas #172 Latrell McCutchin (-5) #174 Theodore Knox (-5) #178 Quaydarius Davis (-4) – USC #181 Romello Brinson (-4) #191 Behren Morton (-6) – Texas Tech #207 Garrett Nussmeier (-8) – LSU #208 Andrew Mukuba (-6) #218 Monkell Goodwine (-8) #222 Tate Williams (NC) – Baylor #224 Trey Zuhn (-7) – Texas A&M #235 Deuce Harmon (-8) #238 Ishmael Ibraheem (-139)
  10. I hadn't considered that...but it's a good point. Considering that the university of Iowa is basically is basically a branch of China at this point, this could increasingly be a compounded issue for the school that Greg Davis built. Articles from a few years back: https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2015/07/us/culture-clash-american-story/ https://international.uiowa.edu/news/myth-iowa-city’s-luxury-cars https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20160607-a-lust-for-speed-young-rich-and-chinese-in-rural-america
  11. the numbers are there but the evals are not. For example Sturdivant is ranked 13 in TX by 247. 4.67 40 and a 4.31 shuttle 22.3 200m. He does this not at 6'5" but at 6'2" and 180. Jaxson Smith-Njigba 6'1" 199 4.59 40 - 3.91 shuttle Demond Demas 6'3" 182 4.43 40 - 4.09 shuttle Loic Fouonji 6'5" 21.9 200m Quinten Johnson Freak athleticism and size. Hell, Parker Washington was just another name in the 2020 class. He had really good film and his testing? 4.57 40 - 4.13 shuttle at 200 pounds. How about Collin Sullivan from RR (Texas kicked the tires on him post-QJ) ended up at Purdue. 4.48 40 - 4.08 shuttle - 6'2.5" 194 the level of athlete in this WR class is just down in 2021, the rankings may not reflect it but guys like Sturdivant and Cody Jackson simply don't have the measureables to be ranked where they are. It's Jojo Earle, Quay Davis, and a bunch of guys.
  12. There are elite traits in that upper-middle group, though. Knox is one of the fastest players in-state. They just aren't complete WR prospects in the same way JoJo and Quay are this cycle.
  13. How many of the Texas WRs this year make you go "Damn, that guy is going to be a problem"? Even on a Loic Fuounji level it's slim pickings. It's just Earle and Davis. That's what I mean. There's still some reasonable talent, but almost none of it is very exciting.
  14. I like Alexis and Jackson a good bit, but the Cain take is pretty underwhelming IMO. His film isn’t overly impressive, and testing times are horrible. His best 200 m time on athletic is 24.01, which is pretty yikes. I just don’t see a lot of upside to the take. If you’re gonna take an under the radar guy, I’d like it to be someone with better measurables that suggest a higher ceiling, but Coleman, Yurcich, and Herman all have pretty good track records do identifying low rated guys that turn out so they deserve some leeway on this one. Im with Fud in that I don’t think any of them are horrible takes individually, but none of them should be the best guy in your class. If we land a WR1, then all 3 of these would look a lot better, but I struggle to see who that would be. If it’s Quay, I’d still find that iffy because he’s got a really high attrition risk.
  15. Without having any idea what the bridge too far is built from, I'm curious what the rest of the class thinks about Quay coming on. There has been a lot of public and private recruiting by the commits and none of the public stuff has been directed at Davis, even when he was a reengaged silent.
  16. I've seen a lot of talk about not loving the WR targets/takes but my question is - who outside of Jojo Earle and Quay Davis who is a screaming take? Bryson Green? JJ Henry? Hal Pressley? Elijah Bean? Dylan Goffney? A lot of the same people that are questioning the Cain take are talking about Sturdivant needing an offer. Let's be clear Sturdivant has had A LOT more training and coaching with a lesser frame (shorter arms) and almost identical testing numbers. If you are championing Studivant and not liking the Cain take, that seems like it's about rankings because I think Cain has more upside/potential. Alexis' ranking places him behind in state Texas guys like Bryson Green but he's a WAY more athletic and dynamic player. He just happens to have 3 stars right now as well. I'm ok with taking 10.75 100 guys that have a dad that played in the NFL and know what's expected of them in terms of work/dedication. I don't know that I am in love with any of them but if the class is Cain, Alexis, Jackson, and a late riser (Cam Bonner or Knox) while staying on Earle and Quay to the bitter end I'm not hating it either. I still think Quay ends up at Texas in the end, honestly.
  17. Will be interesting to see when it gets close to signing day if the staff will push for/take a Quay Davis flip.
  18. Quay Davis must have some really bad off-field issues to being back in the class a couple months ago to the point we are at now.
  19. Updated Composite 4) Tommy Brockermeyer 17) Camar Wheaton 22) Donovan Jackson 24) Ja'Tavion Sanders 33) Tunmise Adeleye 35) Savion Byrd 36) Billy Bowman 43) LJ Johnson 66) Bryce Foster 71) JoJo Earle 81) Jalen Milroe 88) Preston Stone 93) Shadrach Banks 95) Marcus Burris 102) Cody Jackson 103) Garrett Nussmeier 106) Quadarius Davis 107) Clayton Smith 110) Landon Jackson 126) Ishmael Ibraheem 130) Dematrius Davis 131) Latrell McCutchin 137) Sawyer Robertson 140) Reuben Fatheree 147) Jaeden Roberts 148) J.Michael Sturdivant 150) Ketron Jackson 153) Kendrick Blackshire 172) Derrick Harris Jr 175) JD Coffey 185) Eli Stowers 189) Theodore Knox 192) Shemar Turner 195) James Brockermeyer 220) Dametrious Crownover 227) Shedeur Sanders 233) Jordon Thomas 236) Behren Morton 240) Hunter Washington 251) Bryson Green 253) Kaidon Salter 270) Ahmonte Watkins 274) Andrew Mukuba 281) Hayden Conner 302) Deuce Harmon 309) Brandon Campbell 312) Landyn Watson 321) Jerand Bradley 329) Elijah Arroyo 333) David Abiara 341) Blaine Green 350) Latrell Neville 364) Cam'Ron Valdez 366) Morice Blackwell 368) Jordan Jenkins 379) Tavierre Dunlap 381) Matthew Wykoff 382) Byron Murphy II 398) Cullen Montgomery Not in the top 400; Terrance Cooks (480), Juan Davis (461), Landen King (769) https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/CompositeRecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool
  20. Ketch's LSR 100 https://n.rivals.com/ranks/3764 TL;DR It's not bad. He LOVES Wheaton, thinks LJ is overrated. Too high on Coffey and Burris, thinks Chris Murray is heavily underrated. Cooks at 72 is the only egregious miss imo. Sturdivant ahead of Quay, JoJo ahead of both. Ish is too low in the 20s. Mukuba is too low in the 50s.
  21. Mike at night It sounds like Texas is making some progress out west with Pasadena (Calif.) Muir cornerback Jamier Johnson. Chris Ash has been pushing for Johnson hard, and I was told by a source out west he's receptive. USC holds a commitment from Johnson's teammate Calen Bullock, but there's a feeling Johnson wants to get out of California. I checked around today and it sounds like Oregon, Texas and Colorado are the schools with the most buzz for the four-star prospect. Texas hosted Johnson for a virtual visit this week, and the Longhorns are pushing. They are going to need to get him to campus once restrictions lift, but this is an out of state name to keep an eye on. —I've also heard some positive chatter around Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany defensive back Jaylin Smith. Like Johnson, I was told Texas is having productive conversations and receiving strong feedback on the four-star prospect. I dug around and it sounds like USC is definitely the lead dog in this race, and their firm grip on the 247Sports Crystal Ball race for Smith speaks volumes. One Pac 12 assistant told me he thought Smith was the best defensive back in California. Texas seems to be in the top group but they have some work to do to catch USC. —I thought there was a chance Texas could hang around with Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei cornerback Jaylin Davies, but I think he ends up elsewhere. 247Sports' national analyst Greg Biggins recently entered a crystal ball for Davies to land at Arizona State and he's plugged into that recruitment. Sources in Austin tell me contact with Davies has slowed, so it makes sense that he's headed elsewhere.
  22. Clemson might be taking only one safety this class, and since they have several studs on their radar at the position, they aren't really pushing for any of them because they're still evaluating the best option. I don't think Dabo would let Mukuba even commit right now because he hasn't visited, and who knows when he'll be able to visit? Safety Khari Gee has a top two of LSU and Clemson, and he got Fong'd to LSU yesterday, but the Clemson mod (Annal Hickey, who actually seems to do a good job) thinks that LSU is leading for the moment because they're pushing, but that could change if Clemson decides to prioritize him. Various safety options mentioned for Clemson (along with Mukuba) are: https://247sports.com/Player/Khari-Gee-46076916/ https://247sports.com/Player/Derrick-Davis-Jr-46049676/ https://247sports.com/Player/Kendal-Daniels-46080278/ https://247sports.com/Player/James-Williams-46049981/ https://247sports.com/Player/Sage-Ryan-46082413/ I'm fairly certain Sage Ryan is an LSU lock, but Clemson is a school you can never count out regardless of the headwinds in a recruitment. Their posters seem to be hoping for Daniels and Davis, fwiw. And while I really like Mukuba as a prospect, I'm wondering if Clemson is only taking one safety in this class, is he really the best they can get?
  23. The only thing inhibiting us here is potentially the logjam we're acquiring at his potential positions. We've got 2 DE and 1 OLB linebackers committed already, and Juan Davis could make it a 4th, although I doubt that would scare Smith.
  24. Composite has been updated with the new ESPN rankings kicking in. A few notes:. Bowman is just a few points away from composite 5*. Mukuba and Arroyo are now a composite 4*. Guys like Brooks, King, Williams, and Bounds had increases in about the 50-70 point range. Davis and Cooks with slight increases. Blackwell with a good jump. Harmon dropped, now in low 4* range. McCutchin continues to drop.
