Bobby Burton -- TUESDAY

Quote

Devin Duvernay’s kick return for a TD against the defending Super Bowl champs last night reminded me exactly of the type of player Texas lost this past season.

With just how hard and consistent he worked while at Texas, it was awesome to see one of the good guys rewarded on the prime-time stage.

**

At one point during the Chiefs-Ravens game, all Ravens points had been scored by former Longhorns.

Along with Duvernay’s TD, you have to remember that Justin Tucker is the all-pro kicker for Baltimore.

It seems like every few years that the Longhorns produce a kicker who eventually spends a long time in the NFL.

Before Tucker, there was Phil Dawson.

Before Dawson, there were Russel Erxlebern and Raul Allegre.

Allegre remains one of my favorite stories in Texas football history because of the underdog nature of it.

Born in Mexico, Allegre attended high school in suburban Seattle playing mostly soccer. Originally offered a partial scholarship, he eventually signed a full football scholarship with Montana State and then transferred as a walk-on to Texas two years later for an engineering degree.

Yes, he made the move because of the engineering school, not the football team.

Allegre ended up kicking nine years in the NFL. He has an undergrad and graduate degree in engineering from Texas.

But it is his work at ESPN that has made him a household name in certain homes.

With ESPN for about the past 30 years, Allegre is considered the most influential Spanish language NFL broadcaster.

Tom Herman reported yesterday that Jake Smith is back at practice this week.

That’s obviously great news for a team needing more firepower in its receiving corps.

But there is no real update yet on the progress of Jordan Whittington. After doctors removed a partial meniscus tear suffered during the UTEP game, the initial prognosis for Whittington’s return was 2-3 weeks.

Well, we’re now more than a week in. With the OU game to follow TCU, it’ll be interesting to see if he gets back to practice next week.

Chris Ash was welcomed to the Big 12 by Texas Tech.

New coaches to the league often misunderstand just how good, prolific and precise the passing attacks in the conference are.

A large part of that is the quarterback play.

Did you know that only three Big 12 teams don’t have a QB on an NFL roster?

So 7 of the conference’s 10 teams do.

Geno Smith, Will Grier - West Virginia

Robert Griffin - Baylor

Andy Dalton - TCU

Colt McCoy - Texas

Pat Mahomes - Texas Tech

Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts - Oklahoma

Mason Rudolph - Oklahoma State

I don’t know if Alan Bowman will make it in the NFL. Or Max Duggan, Sam Ehlinger, Brock Purdy, etc.

But the idea is that the difference between the quality of the QB play in the Big 12 and other conferences is pretty clear. And it’s why it’s hard to go undefeated in the conference.

One of these guys gets a hot hand and things get tough for opponents pretty quick.

They were getting pretty good pressure most of the game. It's hard to get sacks when the QB can immediately throw to an open WR.

This. Fucking Ash needs to figure out he's going to get dinked and dunked to infinity in this league unless he plays some fucking tight coverage right off the line.
