So as a newb can I just expect that the reason a lot of our starting XI has to do with playing Monday and then again Saturday and then turn around and play UEFA on Tuesday that Kane, Lamela, Moura rest?    This sure does seem like a ridiculous number of matches even for professionals.    Is this cup designed to allow clubs to play and develop bench players?

yes, this is all pretty much correct. the carabao (efl) cup isn't necessarily designed to allow clubs to play younger/bench players but it very often ends up that way as it's seen as the least prestigious of the english competitions (League and FA cup being the top two, respectively).

this has been a brutal stretch of matches (in terms of amount) for spurs and i can't recall seeing anything like it in five years of following the team closely. lineup selections are going to get really interesting if spurs are basically eliminated from the UCL going into the match with inter on 11/28 with the NLD four days later.
