I think the better metric would be to look at the increase in debt as a percentage of GDP, not the increase of debt as a percentage of existing debt.  It doesn't seem very useful to look at debt increase as a percentage of existing debt.  For example, if one makes $100k per year and is in debt for $1k and throughout the year his debt increases to $2k, then this not a very big deal even though it is a Δdebt/debt increase of 100%; but it is not a big deal because it is debt increase compared to earning income of only 1%.  Now if his existing debt is $100k and he increases that to $200k, then this a much more significant concern even though it is the same Δdebt/debt increase of 100% compared to the $1k to $2k debt increase scenario.  But the reason it is a bigger concern is because it is a Δdebt/income increase of 100%.

So what are the Δdebt/GDP increases for these presidents?  Not trying to assign you with work, just genuinely curious and figured you may have them.  If you have a good source for the numbers (including GDP our some other metric that is a good indicator of income/earning power) I'll crunch the numbers when I get the time.

You're overthinking this thread.  Half of the post are from people who didn't even go to college and have their TV permanently set to Fox News.

Entitlements is a word solely used to describe mandatory spending items vs discretionary spending items.

Social security, Medicare, and Medicaid are the top 3.

I figured someone would take the bait:

    How is Social Security financed?

Social Security is financed through a dedicated payroll tax. Employers and employees each pay 6.2 percent of wages up to the taxable maximum of $118,500 (in 2016), while the self-employed pay 12.4 percent.

In 2015, $795 billion (85 percent) of total Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance income came from payroll taxes. The remainder was provided by interest earnings ( $93 billion or 10 percent) and revenue from taxation of OASDI benefits ( $32 billion or 3 percent), and $325 million in reimbursements from the General Fund of the Treasury - most resulting from the 2012 payroll tax legislation.

When I was growing up, we had Catahoulas and Catahoula Cur dogs to work cattle with.  Very strong minded dogs.  We also had ducks, chickens, etc.  As you may expect, one of the young cow dogs killed a duck; didn't eat it, just killed it.  My dad came home from work and discovered this transgression.  He proceeded to beat the offending dog with the duck carcass.  He beat that dog until he was holding nothing but duck feet, and at one point when the dog snapped back at him, he proceeded to put a couple of boots into the dog.  After that, a duck could walk over that dog and he would not even look at it.

Not saying it is the way to go or endorsing that method of dog training, just relaying a story.  I am in no way endorsing that you beat your dog with your wife's dead body until he submits.

We have a Catahoula so this hits close to home.  Very smart and sweet dog. Can be a little feisty.  Needy as hell.  Requires about six hours of petting/playing a day.

Oh so when you make a point that managing the gov'ts debt in a responsible manner is important it's not hating the gov't, when others make the same point it's hating the gov't.  You really Are a self important little dick.

    You finally posted something accurate.

Debt has exploded due to entitlements. Taxes as a percent of gdp have been stable. Who created those entitlements?  Which are harder to kill than Michael Myers.

    What entitlements?

If America is destroyed by anything...it will be by our success.

That and the destruction of the family structure, along with morality.

Success?  No.  Buy runaway greed of the donor class.

Destruction of the family structure?  I doubt that will become widespread enough to destroy America but it's certainly a drag on individual economy.

Morality?  Please don't assume that middle-of-nowhere flyover territory has a corner on morality.  There's plenty of morality (as defined by local standards) in NYC.  And plenty of immorality.  Just like where you live.

I asked a simple question. Do you think the level of spending relative to taxation was sustainable prior to the latest tax bill?

    Yes.

Assuming you have responsible elected officials managing the debt and spending.

I pay for the food, medicine and schooling for 8 Haitian orphans.  Every month. Since 2003.  I think it’s now $400 a month. I could probably have swung a vacation house with the money I’ve spent down there between monthly donations, capital donations and travel

I have over 1,000 pro bono hours with various low income people and entities.  Admittedly I’ve fallen off on that since I’ve had kids.  Weekends now are soccer and baseball plus several practices a week. But plan on doing more when I retire relatively young

I got a nonviolent black drug offender who got dicked over by sentencing freed from a life without parole sentence.  I was a clerk for the federal judge who sentenced him.  And it made us both sick.   Got his sentence commuted.  He will be home by Christmas.  I credit Obama for that  and hope Trump follows his lead

I also give ten points to my small church. But that doesn’t count, right?

    Wow, I'm impressed.  Really.
