  1. Motivation and skillsets are not dependent on governmental competence. Sniping and SF is, of course, something learned in the military, but taking on disinterested conscripts in stalled columns doesn’t require military supermen.
  2. Yup. Especially the APC versions of crossovers running around with reindeer antlers at Christmas.
  3. Yes. But it seems the Russians were trying to communicate with modified phones that they cockblocked themselves by destroying the cellular network. So now those APCs with the antlers are doubly important.
  4. “Accio T-80!” Ukrainian farmer pulls up towing some armor. ”See, I told you this shit works.” ”
  5. So then you tell your troops to give any armored personnel carrier with an antenna farm on top extra attention. That’s probably a unit commander of some sort.
  6. I was making the obligatory reference. There’s also Zorro, the Gay Blade, and that might terrify the nazi elements or inflame them ( in more ways than one?), but that’s hardly the stuff to motivate most troops.
  7. Obligatory World War Z reference. Probably randomly chosen, but maybe a reference to the Ukrainian president as well.
  8. So are the Israelis there to haggle them to death in their stalled convoys?
  9. Living in Brazoria County would make me consider vaporization the most viable alternative. I wish I had a dollar for each mile my extended family drove down 332/288 to the plants.
  10. RSR was his opus in my opinion. Some other good reads, but that one kept me glued as soon as the action started. The interesting thing to me about the Bear and the Dragon scenario is that is kicks off with a super bug being released in the US by the Chinese. And that hits close to home these days. But agree with the premise. Russia ever caught looking the wrong way with multiple deep invasions by different enemies burned deep into their national conscience is defending against the wrong threat. And their pact with Hitler should be a lifelong lesson about honor among thieves imoho.
  11. Another thought on the wood stacked on trucks. Mud. Good way to get out of it. And those are bridging units.
  12. Clancy novel. The Bear and the Dragon. This war sets up that war quite well.
  13. DOT says myth. Army says fact. Ofcourse, the myth busted is that 1 in every 5 miles has to be a suitable runway. That seems like a bit much. I doubt that such a system was built and no one thought to put in a few strategic places for that very purpose.
  14. I wasn’t suggesting using mud. And I’m sure the Soviets had the prescience to build long straightaways in their highway systems too. I’ve never been feet in the ground in Ukraine, but surely they have a rudimentary paved highway system in places.
  15. The one truck is protecting the engine only, and the other has a solid attempt at protecting the cab. Regardless, the javelin is a top attack missile designed to hit armored vehicles where their protection is thinnest. It may be the engines are being protected because the Uks are just trying to stall convoys and cause traffic jams that they can clean up at their leisure. In which case I’d try to keep the motor running too.
  16. Those planes were built with exactly that in mind. Most pilots would be unhappy using a standard Russian airbase. They built those planes like tanks to rough it. I know what I’d do if the choice is no Air Force or clearing some trees, signs and power lines to get 6000 feet of unobstructed pavement.
  17. I would think they’d need a mix of MiG-29’s, SU fighters and the the Sukhoi-25. Having said that… everyone practices flight operations from highways with improvised reventments for fueling and arming. That is to say, push the damn things across the border if you have to and have the Ukrainians figure out how to get them airborne. I bet they have some ideas and the balls to try it.
  18. I remember our troops welding whatever metal they could find to their Humvees before the up-armored versions were produced and delivered to Iraq. I wonder if this is the Russian attempt at the same with the materials on hand with wood being more durable and as plentiful as vodka bottles.
  19. So basically the Valley was taken a few years ago, Houston just fell, Beaumont is under assault and there’s a huge Russian column stalled outside of Denton trying to surround the Metroplex. And nobody generally gives a F what’s happening west of the Dnieper River (I35).
  20. The US still has several thousand nuclear weapons. More than enough to properly end humanity.
  21. If only there were a way to stop the transmission of power from a nuclear power plant without shelling the plant itself. How do they get power from power plants to users anyway?
