  1. Of course. “Imagine four Taylor Swifts dressed in suits and ties.” (Can’t remember who said it.) I don’t look forward to that day but the whole world is going to come to a standstill when Paul actually dies for real.
  2. That was my first thought. I don’t know if it counts but whatever. Solid tune…
  3. Mission accomplished.
  4. That hasn’t happened anywhere else yet.

A musician friend of mine used to play in a band called Toast.
  6. We can only hope. After the shooting in Parkland failed to bring on any change in leadership, I don’t have much hope. Fingers crossed, though.
  7. I don’t know. The Apprentice was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. Without that (and then Twitter), he’d probably still be doing commercials for fast food and laundry detergent.
  8. Come on, Floridians! Follow Ohio’s lead!
  9. It depends on your desires. If you’re pro-fascism and pro-Putin, you favor his lapdog Trump. If you’re pro-democracy and pro-Ukraine, you favor the old Cold Warrior Biden.
  10. I’m pretty sure my mom counts herself among that exclusive club.
  11. Warren’s voice is a good stand-in for Brent Mydland. Ever heard him sing Tons of Steel? Here’s a better recording that includes a long jam at the end of the song; the other guitarist is Jimmy Herring (formerly of Aquarium Rescue Unit): https://archive.org/details/2001-04-29.paf.sbd.bertha-ashley.5877.sbeok.flacf/pf01-04-29newd2t03.flac
  12. Hasn’t that been happening since the 80’s? Since the “Reagan revolution” and the AIDS crisis?
  13. Apparently it’s a misquotation attributed to Gandhi who never said it, but whoever said it nailed it: “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
  14. Nothing new. Christianity has a long and sordid history of treating people like shit.
  15. Oh, and for all you slackers out there, you should watch this whole video because all of it is excellent. But here it is cued up to Bobby switching on his cool wah-wah effect and some fun banter before they launch into a very nice Crazy Fingers.
  16. It turns out that the Move Me Brightly video has more than just the documentary. I fell asleep watching it the other night and woke up to the last song on the video: Ship of Fools sung by Neal Casal. I ‘rewound’ the video and saw that there’s more there. I’ll have to revisit it. I haven’t done that yet. Just an example, though, here’s a poem for Jerry written by David Crosby and read by Jim Lauderdale before they play Friend of the Devil. (I don’t think it’s the greatest poem in the world but you be the judge.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk3fDgkZmfI&t=3h18m32s Neal’s a special case. I’d never heard of him before that show, just like most of the other guest performers in that show like Lukas Nelson or Harper Simon — Paul’s kid. Neal was a fairly constant presence in that rotating lineup and eventually had just one song to sing. He nailed it. He’s featured in a number of interview segments early in the doc. I don’t remember where his song fit in the original performance. That whole thing was around 4-and-a-half hours long. (Pretty stunning when I didn’t even know it was going to happen and had no idea when it would end; Weir Here episodes were usually around 2 hrs long.) Anyway, I don’t know what Neal’s demons were but he took his own life a little more than 7 years later. I’ve never heard the cause nor the reason. From what I can gather it took everyone by surprise. There are only a few excerpts from that show that I could find before this ‘full’ video was posted. But Neal’s rendition of Fools was up there. I just never found it before because I wasn’t searching specifically by his name. You can watch it in the Move Me Brightly video but here it is standalone:
  17. Are both of them Josephus? He’s not reliable and wasn’t an “historian” in the modern sense of the word. There are questions about the reliability of his (scant) writings about Jesus, whom he never knew, and whether his accounts were even his own and not edits added later on by believers with an agenda. (He No one wrote about Jesus during the time that he was alleged to have existed. Not even the Romans who were kind of big on record-keeping. Can you name a Roman “historian” who wrote about Jesus and who wasn’t a Christian convert? Can you name a source that mentions Jesus earlier than 100 years after his supposed death? If you want to believe, it’s easy to be convinced. If you don’t care what’s true and only want to find convincing evidence about whether Jesus really existed, you can’t find any. I have no idea if the historical Jesus actually existed. I doubt that he did. Maybe he did. Maybe he’s a compilation of numerous characters who existed during that time, itinerant preachers who advocated peace and love for everyone like a first century hippie. Maybe he’s a purely fictional character like Gandalf or Hari Seldon or John Galt. It doesn’t really matter. Someone wrote the words attributed to him and we can take those words for what they’re worth. But I’ve yet to see any convincing evidence that the historical Jesus actually existed. If he really was all that the legends and myths say he was, someone who lived during his time would’ve mentioned him. Who created God?
  18. Both testaments? Are there only two? Do you think the character of Jesus in the Bible was a real person who actually existed? If so, why?
  19. He’s never read the book. Question him on anything and he won’t be able to answer. Ask him to quote John 3:16 and he’d be totally lost. Ask him out of context about John 3:16 and he’d tell you about how John 316 was so much better than John 314 and John 315, and how John 316 was a big strong man who came up to him with tears in his eyes and called him sir and thanked him for being such a great Christian leader.
  20. Oh, I totally misinterpreted your post. Yeah, it’s crazy that people believe this stuff. And it’s obvious that most of the believers have never read what’s in their scripture. Not all of it and not objectively, anyway. How many of them have only watched The Ten Commandments and think they know the scripture? More than not, I’d wager. (Fine movie, though. So is Star Wars. And The Adventures of Robin Hood. They’re all fantasy.)
