  1. WNBA is real -- just like wrestling!
  2. That reminds me that I need a set of those! Thanks!
  3. I'm not a Surly lawdog, but there are circumstances where owners can move to establish a receivership over a property to resolve those kinds of issues.
  4. This is a big issue all over Texas. Ranches turning into Ranchettes that are too small to effectively manage. In my personal situation, we have some generational timberland in East Texas that will get split up as the actuarial tables tell their tales. There has been some resistance to actually moving properties to some sort of trust or family LLC-such vehicle, but, so far, we have managed to all mutually engage the same forestry consultant under a single contract. Way better to go to market with more acreage whether you are harvesting or re-planting.
  5. My wife always warned my son about about marrying a rich/privileged girl, as he'd never be able to do enough to keep her happy. He took that to heart. They eloped and got married in front of a judge. We had a party for them at a brewery a couple of months later and had Matt's El Rancho cater it. Maybe $2,500-$3,000 out of pocket. 8 years and 2 grandkids later, they are still married. A great investment!
  6. Martini talk on the Cheese Enchilada thread not going away.
  7. I have a small acreage place and just use the biggest gasoline powered Husqvarna garden tractor for grass cutting and a self powered Swisher tow-behind for brush. I am beating the shit out of them and probably need to upgrade. My biggest issue holding me back is making the switch to diesel. How to you guys deal with diesel? Did you go ahead and get a storage tank big enough to be able to get a company to make deliveries? Or do you just schlep it around in the back of your pickup truck? Thanks.
  8. Definitely an acquired taste, but good for him! RIP.
  9. Those TV ads were from the early 1960s. Villa Capri's restaurant was considered to be a really big deal back then. Christie's, Norman Eaton's Polynesian Room, Nighthawk. The Barn, and private places like Headliners and Austin Club were the height of the Austin fine dining scene back then. The restaurant world in Austin changed in a big way after liquor by the drink become legal.
  10. @Lidig8r I think he mostly does civil stuff, but bet that he knows somebody that could fit the bill.
  11. Pretty sure that it always included the hotel component. https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth1227546/
  12. Yes. I never understood that U.R. Cooks place. If I'm gonna be getting stinked up grilling steaks, I'm gonna be doing it out on my deck and drinking my own whiskey.
  13. Not a fan. If I'm paying over a $100 per couple, before wine is figured in, they damn well better be doing the cooking for me!
  14. I grew up in a hyper-protestant world. Now have attended a conservative Anglican church for 25+ years. I appreciate the liturgy and and am glad that we have bumper rails against whatever Brother Bob decides that he wants to emphasize (Generally it's all Romans, all the time, in my prior experience!) YMMV, but this has worked well for me, plus I don't have to put up with the hippie music that my RC friends try to tolerate.
  15. I know that this ages me, but the Villa Capri (where the Longhorn football practice bubble is now located) was considered to be fine dining in Austin when @Armybrat and I were growing up. Here are some of their TV commercials. https://texasarchive.org/2010_01862
  16. Yep Hyatt Regency site. That Christie's place was some pretty high cotton when I was growing up in Austin. Just like the Villa Capri! Link to some great old commercials: https://texasarchive.org/2010_01862
  17. That recipe does look worthwhile!
  18. I saw Earl and his brothers eating those.
  19. Well, this was a pretty important date in Austin (and Texas)history! In 1971, the Most Important Drink in Austin’s History Crossed the Bar https://austin.towers.net/in-1971-the-most-important-drink-in-austin-history-crossed-the-bar/?pro=jude@towers.net
  20. James is my favorite book in the bible. I try to read it every month. If folks lived up to even half of what that book says, the world would be a much better place.
  21. Timely for me. I just went to the funeral of my 91 y/o uncle who spent his life as a Baptist minister. He explained it to me as how they don't disagree with the Nicene Creed or even The Lord's Prayer, they just don't believe in the recitation of such stuff in public worship is appropriate. Vain words and all. I hope that every word spoken at my funeral comes straight from the 1928 BCP!
  22. Love Omaha. Playing golf at Dodge park at dawn on the other side of the river every time I've been to a Texas CWS has been a staple for me and my crew!
  23. Austin is going to become a sundown town? https://austinfreepress.org/sundown-home-town/
