Electric Cars
I've spent all morning talking with dealers about buying one so I feel pretty well versed at the moment. It came down to the Mach E versus the Hyundai Ioniq 5 for us. My wife didn't care but I liked the Mach E a little more just because I think it looks cooler and I feel more comfortable about starting a 10-year relationship with Ford than I do with Hyundai. They are both really nice vehicles. The Mach E feels like a hell of a lot of car for a 15 year old. Maybe that's true of all EVs though. Ride is a little rougher than the Ioniq 5 but it's not awful. The big strike against the Mach E, and the thing that almost killed it for us, is the controls/infotainment system. It's a giant, vertically-oriented tablet in the middle of the dash and that's it. No physical controls for anything whatsoever. The A/C controls stay on the screen at all times but they're all the way at the bottom so you have to look quite low to use them. And since it's just a touch screen, you do have to look. We ultimately decided that we could live with it because we liked the rest of the car, but to be 100% honest with you I can't see how it won't be distracting as fuck for a teenager/new driver. He's going to be playing with the goddamn tablet instead of driving.

I have no idea how it got to 193. It started at 200 and I never touched it. I just set it back to 200.

Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: Boulevard of Broken Bagmen
I assume it's just a reference to his dad having played at TCU. And the trend matters way more than the absolute position in recruiting. If the reporting has gone from "don't worry about Fasusi, Turntine is ours" to "at least 50/50" in 6 months, it's a major negative indicator. They're setting it up to let the subscribers down softly.

So the final decision isn't made but we're kind of zeroing in on the Ioniq 5. I'd want an SEL (middle trim), AWD. I live in Houston so AWD is hardly a must but the AWD has significantly more power, which sounds fun. Problem is, there isn't a single new AWD vehicle on a lot in the Houston area, according to Hyundai's website. Maybe not even in Texas. Not one. I checked a random Hyundai dealership in Denver, and that dealer alone has 146 in stock and 23 more on the way.

USMNT 2025 - Easy English, hard ones Spanish
Schulte. He’s the current next great hope. Just signed an extension with Columbus but you gotta assume he’ll be off to Europe pretty soon. Gaga transferred to Chelsea and has been loaned out ever since. This season he was loaned to a League One side, got benched there after a couple months, subsequently got “injured”, and returned early to Chelsea in January. So it’s going great.

Never looked at a lease contract before. It’s mildly surprising to me if there’s no clause to buy it out early.

How shitty is our pool that two different head coaches now have been all in on Matt Turner, who has toured around to every club in Europe at this point and can't get playing time at any of them? Supposedly a nice guy and all, but god damn, GK used to be a strength for us.

Can y'all learn me on leasing? Like leasing 101? I've never leased a car in my life. What I want to do is pay cash and then drive the car into the ground for the next 10 years, which is what we plan to do with this EV. But the dealers are all pushing everyone so hard toward leasing (because of the tax credit I guess?). Can I just lease one, pay the lease for a month, then immediately buy it out? Does it work that way?

I hear you, I just don't feel like stressing about/keeping track of who's done what. Almost everyone is paid up. I'm going to send out another round of emails and PMs. If you don't get one today, you're golden.

Electric Cars
We test drove a used 2024 i4 with 2500 miles yesterday. That car is the shit. A pure pleasure to drive. This one was even the lowest trim level. Ultimately, a little bit too small for what we need, unfortunately. One thing I've learned is that manufacturers are going crazy with all the touchscreen bullshit in cars these days. Don't know if it's just EVs or everything. Either that or I'm getting old. Just give me some fucking buttons. I don't need to be trying to play a video game while I'm driving. The interface in the Mach E in particular is damn near a dealbreaker for us. Just awful.

Maybe we should have hired Panama’s coach. Who were we missing from the A team other than Jedi? Pepi, maybe? Don’t say fucking Balogun.

I think the Volvos are assembled in China. Not a total dealbreaker, but definitely a strike against them given there's plenty of other choices. I kind of forgot about the Bolt. Not sure how I feel about getting something that's already discontinued by the manufacturer. Don't think a MB is in the budget. That's interesting, may have to check it out.

MLS 2025 - no one wants to watch anyway
Well my boss paid $1200 for his family of four to see Messi vs Dynamo a couple weeks ago. Turns out Messi never even set foot in Houston. Whoops.

MLS 2025 - no one wants to watch anyway
Here's an interesting article The Athletic did a couple weeks ago. Survey of MLS executives on league issues. This is actually Part 2 of 2. Part 1 covered on-the-field stuff and has a lot of charts that I can't copy/paste. This definitely goes into the TV stuff that we've been discussing.

Electric Cars
My search parameters are basically anything <$50k, non-Tesla. This will be a commuter car (~50 miles/day round trip) and charged at home every night, so not super worried about range/charging time/supercharger access. Just needs to be big enough for my 2 kids to hop in the back and run errands, etc, on the weekends. A little fun to drive would be a plus. Here's an exhaustive list I've come up with, cars that you can buy right now today and fit my criteria: BMW i4 (lightly used, can't be had new for <$50k) Chevy Blazer Chevy Equinox Ford Mustang Mach E Hyundai Ioniq 5 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Hyundai Kona Kia Niro Kia EV6 Nissan Ariya Toyota bZ4X Volkwagen ID4 Note that Honda has something also, but I personally have beef with Honda and won't consider them. Off the bat, we're probably most interested in the Ioniqs, Mach E, and the i4. Haven't dug in to research or driven anything yet. Our other vehicle is a Toyota that we've been really happy with but reviewers unanimously shit on the bZ4X. Might still check it out. I had literally never heard of the Nissan until I started this process.

2025 Surly Roto Baseball
I wanted to keep it on the small side because the active rosters are so big. The idea is to encourage more free agent/waiver action versus stashing and holding anyone with any value. Open to hearing other perspectives though. Should we go bigger bench but take out the extra IF and OF?
