  1. Yep.  She went down swinging, and I give her a little credit for doubling down on the lie.  The only other option would have been to try to get out of the lie by claiming that she was simply trying to get intel from Malolo on possible voting targets or something.  That may have been more plausible, especially if she explained it to her inner circle.

Can you guys school me on trainers?  I have an entry level Felt road bike, and I would love to log more hours.  Not that trainer miles are the same, but I only have time for quality longer rides on the weekends.  With young kids and stuff going on it's not always a given that i'll have time on the weekends.  Definitely not getting up at 4:30am, and as novice I would be kind of skittish riding in the dark anyways.  Would like to have a setup to stay fit so that when I do have time I can put up more miles.

Are cheap trainers just absolute junk?

A lot of good advice has been given.  Logging training time will absolutely make you a better rider, and you will be surprised by how even minimal sessions can prevent significant loss of fitness.  If you are just getting started, I would not even consider rollers.  A basic magnetic or fluid trainer from Kinetic or Cyclops should fit the bill.  Looking for a gently used one is a great suggestion.

I'm gonna move over to this thread. Thanks for those of you who gave guidance in my bike purchasing endeavors on the other subforum.

For casual daily riding, what's the advantage of a cycling jersey compared to a Nike/UA/Lulu shirt? I'm 6'2" and fairly trim. I bought a Castelli jersey size XL and it feels tiny on me and will probably show my midriff because it's shorter in front. I tried on a few other brands with similar results. Other than the cycling jersey having pockets, what other reason should I have for using that on a regular basis? I have a ton of workout shirts that seem like they would be just fine.

Cycling jerseys are designed to be functional.  They should fit somewhat snugly to reduce wind drag and evaporate sweat.  Pockets can hold whatever is essential for you to carry.  For casual riding, and if you don't need the pockets, then stick with whatever is comfortable.

If you catch the bug and decide that you want to start taking cycling a little more seriously, you can shop jerseys then.  When that happens, you'll find that jersey fit will vary greatly from one brand to another.  One XL (or even XXL) will squeeze the ever loving life out of you, while another will feel baggy and inefficient.  Some jersey materials keep you cool and comfy, while others will feel itchy and irritating.  It's a lot like saddles and shorts.  You just have to try some until you find what works for you.  Don't be the guy who buys a full Italian racing kit after two weeks of riding the starter bike on the MUP...unless it will get you laid.

Also, if you start riding with a group, you will likely encounter multiple people who have several jerseys (and other gear) that they are willing to give away because they don't get used.  I regularly hand down my stuff to anyone who will make use of it.

  4. What a weird season.  No one seems to have a good read on anyone else, and it is making for some really questionable game play.  Maybe Des thought she was close enough to Laurel to trust her, but we haven't seen anything to support that assumption.  It would have been funny if her over the top lying worked.  At least Des tried to make a move, which is more than I can say for anyone else.

I'm still waiting for Ghost Island to be meaningful.  It's pointless to have the team that wins a challenge choose whom to send, as the teams are all mixtures of original tribes and alliances, so it's always going to be drawing rocks.  I think shaking up the tribes so much in the beginning really hurt that aspect of the game.  On the other hand, I'm surprised that the alliances still seem to be about original tribe membership.  Why?  It's as though no bonding at all has occurred since Day 1.

  5. Looks like you are all set to test the waters a bit.  Once you make the jump to clipless pedals, you will wonder how you ever rode without them.

I have not used a patch kit in probably 15 years, and have stopped taking up storage space with them.  I squeeze two tubes, multitool, and a CO2 cartridge into a minimalist saddle bag, and carry my phone, keys, nutrition, and CO2 pump in my jersey pockets.  A patch will probably get you home, but I prefer the peace of mind of a new tube.  If you don't ride with someone who knows, make sure you learn how to change a flat.  It's common sense, but the time to learn isn't 40 miles from home.  At least watch a youtube.

As discussed in the road cycling thread, phone mounts are iffy, but not because all roadies are elite snobs.  I can still count on one hand the number of rides that I have been on in the past few years where someone has had their phone end up in the road or ditch, but it has happened more than once.  The safest place for your phone is your jersey pocket.  I do agree that if you are just tooling around on bike paths or neighborhood streets, your phone will likely be fine if the mount is at all decent.

  6. Wenger is a class act, and will be missed...at least by me, but I am hopeful that a change will increase our competitiveness.  Who are the favorites to replace him?

  7. Even with Jared, you aren't left with much.  The frequency of genuinely laughable moments or even mere amusement is dwindling with every episode.  I'm still watching, but it's no longer something I feel I need to watch at first airing.  I'll either catch it on a replay or stream it on demand when I can't find anything else more appealing.

holding my phone more securely than a shorts pocket and more conveniently accessed than an arm band (which my phone outgrew anyway).  i'm using the phone for podcasts.

i'm just tooling around houston on paved hike/bike paths getting in some exercise.  i've got no jerseys though maybe that's the best way to go.

If you want to keep things casual, you don't have to buy a full Rapha kit or even wear a traditional cycling jersey to get something functional.  Something like this will allow you to safely carry your phone while riding, and it even has routing holes for headphones.

  9. Boooooooooooo.  Other than common female jealousy, I still don't see why Libby was targeted so often.  She wasn't a threat in any way.  The writing is on the wall for Michael.  No one voted with him, not even Libby.  He is going to have to go on an epic immunity run or someone is going to have to start making moves.  Editing suggests that no one will, or that they won't be successful if they try.

The producers clearly like Dom, Wendel, Laurel, and Donathan.

  10. Count me in with those who have missed substantial time due to injury.  I was out for a year with tendonitis behind the knee caused by a new saddle that was about a centimeter too high.  It took me about 4 months to get back to where I was fitness wise, and I'm still carrying some of the extra weight I gained.  The body just doesn't recover like it did when I was younger.

I generally stick to roads where cycling is common.  Drivers can still get annoyed if they have to work to get around you, but at least most of them know to expect it.  I also picked up one of these.  It's great peace of mind.

I'd like to see Fulham and Villa back in the Premiership but I have nothing against Cardiff City if they get in. You earn that spot which is great. I wish NBC would get on the Championship just for the final playoff.

I'd be okay with Villa ending up in the second guaranteed spot, but want the play-off winner to be Preston North End or a similarly obscure club.

  12. The flip side to relegation is the battle for promotion, which is still 11 teams deep with only 3 matches to go (4 in a couple of cases).  Wolverhampton have clinched.  Cardiff, Fulham, and Villa have at least locked up a play-off spot, but are battling for the second position to avoid that.  Another 7 teams are in contention for the final 2 play-off spots, most of whom have not sniffed the Premiere League in ages.

Interestingly and without exception, having a positive goal differential mirrors contention for promotion.  That's not a shocking occurrence, but I was a little surprised that it broke that cleanly.

I love the promotion/relegation system, and wish we had something similar over here.    It should be an interesting last few weeks.
