Best restaurant in town is liberty hall/inferno. Corner of allister and cotter. Venetian hot plate is also excellent but you’ll need a reservation. La Barataria and Lisabella’s are good too. For more casual cheaper food I like shells and kody’s. Also harbor lights which is at the back porch bar. They have live music on weekends but I think the kitchen closes at 6.

depends on your age but the most popular bar in town is Bernie’s. They have a great happy hour from open until 7. Dollar draft beer and 2 dollar wells. About 10 pm it turns into a dance club with mostly 20s and 30 year olds. Shortys is a good place for a beer outside and so is the back porch.

This is a pretty solid list.  I will add La Playa for the great table side guac alone.  For an entree, order anything with seafood in it.

  2. I'm not the Sky hater that many are, and asked a similar question on the old board.  The gist of it is that Sky painted themselves as a holier than thou squeaky clean team that would win the right way.  Many of their methods are controversial, and while technically legal, definitely don't belong atop the moral high ground from which they preach.  This has made them not particularly well liked in some circles, with many wanting to see them fail and/or caught cheating.

As long as all teams and riders have the same rules and advantages, I don't really care.  These are all still amazing athletes accomplishing epic feats on a bicycle.  Sure, I would prefer that cycling were a completely clean sport, but I'm still a fan, and always will be.

I only live a half mile from Whitfield's, so thought I would give it a shot today.  They opened at 11:00.  I arrived at 11:30 to find 3 people in line.  Normally, I would try brisket, pork ribs, and sausage on a first visit, but they apparently don't do sausage, so I was prepared to make do with the former two.  It took 15 minutes for the first two people to order, while others were still waiting for theirs to be filled.  No numbers are used to identify people.  Casey has to simply remember who ordered what, which didn't appear to be working very well.  Finally, the person in front of me was up, and was told that they only had 1/2 pound of ribs left, which he of course took.  Seriously?

The sparse crowd eating on the premises, and the slow pace of service did not indicate that the place had been slammed since opening.  It's possible one of the first people in line ordered 20 pounds of ribs to go, but even so, when you only have 3 proteins by the pound on the menu (pulled pork was the third), and run out of one of them 45 minutes after opening on a Saturday, you need to get your shit together.  There is one smallish smoker on site, so maybe they are content to serve 20-30 people and call it a day.

Maybe if they had some decent sides other than pickled seasonal fruits and veg, I would have stuck around, but I left without ordering.  The Whataburger I went and picked up instead was excellent.  I realize they just opened, so I will probably give them another chance on a whim while driving home sometime, but for planned 'cue dining, I will likely drive the extra 5 miles to Valentina's.

I decided to stop in on a random afternoon last week, arriving around 2:30.  There was no line, and the only other person there was waiting for their order to be prepared.  The first thing I noticed was that the chalkboard menu had more variety than my first visit.  In addition to brisket, pulled pork, and pork ribs, 3 types of sausage (jalapeño cheese, beef, and Italian) were now being offered under the "by the pound" listings.

Not wanting to waste anyone's time, I asked if they still had some of everything, and was surprised to hear "yes."  I ordered moist brisket, pork ribs, and beef sausage.  I also decided to try the pickled strawberries, just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

The brisket was uneven, with some bites being fairly good, while others were dry and had little flavor.  I'm a sometimes sauce guy, and did feel that in this case, the brisket needed it.  The sauce itself was a fairly standard thin red type that could be had at pretty much any barbecue joint that doesn't go above and beyond.    The ribs were some of the best I have ever had, featuring a simple salt and pepper rub, and smoked to perfection.  These did not get anywhere near the sauce.  The sausage was a tad on the dry side, but very tasty.  I would order it again.  I cannot say the same about the strawberries.  The texture was reminiscent of ones thawed from frozen, and the flavor was meh.  I did not finish them.

So far, this is not a place to satisfy serious brisket cravings, but I will definitely return to see if it improves, and will hope that the ribs are consistently awesome.  I realize that 2:30 in the afternoon isn't exactly prime time, but the lack of any line and still having all menu items available, while being good for me, is probably not a good sign for this truck surviving.  I would not go miles out of your way, but if it's convenient, you may want to try it while you can, especially if you like pork ribs.

"I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less."

Although during one of the World Cup matches yesterday I pointed out to someone else bothered by that phrase that the words "could care less" can go together and be correct with the same meaning. One of the commentators noted that two teams playing in one of the matches didn't care about the result, so he said "neither team could care less" about the result. That is actually the correct way to say it.

Of course it's the correct way to say it.  "Neither" takes the place of the typically contracted "not," providing the required negative to convey proper meaning.  One could also say "No one could care less than I do," and this would also be a correct way to say "I couldn't care less."  As long as there is a negative in there somewhere, it works.

I'm still not getting the whole "Maeve, you were always my favorite", speech from Ford and it's place in the narrative.  She's discarded at the end, her arc resolved, and it's clear the focus has always been on Dolores/Bernard/William.

I could be wrong, but the way the scene was filmed, I got the impression that Maeve was going to be the first recovery project that the two techs tackle.

  6. I was not concerned after the Floreal hire.  CDC declaring that he expects all of our programs to be competitive nationally was not lip service.  He means it.  This is getting exciting.

  7. I think that is the logical assumption that we have to make.  I have seen nothing from CDC that indicates he is someone who would settle.  I think he has a good list of candidates, and is going through it.

  8. I think at this point, the coach has to act as though they are going to be there.  If a coach stops recruiting because of interest in another gig, and then decides to stay, they have unnecessarily fucked over their program.  If they convince a talented transfer to sign, and then take another job at least they are leaving their old program a nice parting gift.  Intentionally misleading a recruit is absolutely gross.  Doing your job to the best of your ability until you take another is the only way to do it, in my opinion.  This could be fixed by allowing transfers a way out if the coach leaves before the next season begins.

  9. While it has been much more prevalent this season, the entire series has had a very noticeable fascination with parent/child relationships.  Even this season's intro sequence shows a host mother holding an infant.  The big question is whether the hosts will be able to reach the point where they are able to procreate.  The ability to produce offspring that can procreate, is what defines a species.
