Had an interesting conversation at the LBS today. Apparently a lot of people are getting back into MTB's. I'm very much a solo rider (though one of the sales guys there just got his BMC in, so we may go for a spin), and not really plugged into the scene anymore, so I'm out of the loop on these things. The conversation started when I was mentioning in passing I started on MTB's back in the late 80s, was one of the original teens who drove that scene, and got into road bikes as I got older. I was somewhat surprised to hear this, as I assumed MTB ridership had been pretty steady, and road biking had been sort of falling in the race scene, but steady in the general ridership sense. Apparently all the road racers are just dropping road bikes almost completely and going MTBing. In our area it's extra odd, as you have to drive a long ass way to get to decent MTBing. To go on the road, it's just open the garage and roll.

I hear you.  I went through a long MTB phase, and even sold my road bike at the time.  I would likely still be riding MTB if I could find miles of rolling single track without having to pack up all my shit and drive somewhere.  I'll drive for an event or if I'm in the mood for something different, but most of my rides are from home.  I have several shop or club rides that I can ride to, and of course, solo is always in play.

There's a whole bunch of stranger things nonsense going on in this thread.  Seriously take off the nostalgia glasses for a moment and try to think of these movies critically. The same people complaining about formulaic movies today are the ones praising the 80's for originality, literally the decade where the blockbuster formula was established. What you liked at age 12 is not a valid measure of greatness.  The fake processed plastic decade produced plenty of pop culture but little in the way of lasting art.

Go read the beginning of the thread again.  In the fourth post, the OP clearly states "list your favorite."  If your favorites also happened to be the most critically acclaimed, then great, but those don't have to be one and the same.  Obviously, a lot of moves we loved as kids and teens aren't going to withstand serious scrutiny.  It doesn't change the fact that they are some of our most loved.  Some people just happen to express "I really enjoyed that movie as a kid" as "That film is a cinematic masterpiece, and it should have won 6 Academy Awards."

In short, I agree with your point, but I have no idea why you're making it.  Enjoy the thread for what it is...oh, that's right, we don't do that.  Never mind.

  3. This is the thread to list your favorite moments in film that, typically subtly, pay tribute to other films or actors.  Here are a few off the top of my head.

Coming to America - Prince Akeem gives money to homeless Randolph and Mortimer Duke.

Doc Hollywood - Nancy Lee (Bridgette Fonda) asks Hank (Woody Harrelson) "is that a star?"  Hank replies, "no, that's Ted Danson."

Working Girl - Katharine (Sigourney Weaver)  returns from her ski trip with a giant stuffed gorilla.

  4. action - Raiders of the Lost Ark

teen angst - The Breakfast Club

soundtrack by Kenny loggins movie - Caddy Shack

teen rom com - Valley Girl

    military action - Gallipoli

Police action - Beverly Hills Cop

comedy - Fast Times at Ridgemont High

must do ____ to save ______ genre - War Games

    sports - Chariots of Fire

Hottest 80's actress - Phoebe Cates

Best SNL cast member comedy - Spies Like Us

Sci-Fi - The Empire Strikes Back

  5. Discuss gear, rides, training tips, recovery regimen, how to piss off motorists and live to tell about it, etc.

Anyone else brave the cold winds this morning at the Salado Smokin' Spokes?  It's a good ride, though I like it more when the elements aren't such a factor.

I am having trouble getting in to this season and I think it's because of the constant tribal shakeups.  It's harder to become familiar with the players when the tribes are always changing.

I agree.  I normally have a favorite by now, with a couple of backups, but no one is holding my interest.  The editing seems focused on the assholes this season.  Yawn.

  7. It seems like there has been a rash of questionable wagering lately.  A lot of people who were ahead before final jeopardy have been losing, even after writing the correct question.  Many of these have been in the reruns from last year, but there have been some from the current season as well.  Have the dynamics of wagering strategy changed?

It should be pretty straightforward, at least for the person in the lead - assume everyone will get the answer correct, and bet enough to cover the person in second place.  It seems that many are betting with the assumption that no one will get the correct question.  Are there stats somewhere that indicate that this is the more likely outcome?  Does Rainman post here?  I'm sure he would know.

  8. Who the fuck doesn't have an idol or advantage at this point?  At least the douche went home instead of the eye candy.

And I agree that that women rarely look for idols, or if they do, it isn't shown.  I want to believe that there is a lot more idol searching than what makes it into an episode, but it's more likely a case where specific contestants are tipped off that an idol is out there...and by "tipped" I mean "here's a map, a photo pf the location,  and a clue sniffing squirrel."

Is this last pic the waterfall billboard on I-35 heading into downtown Dallas?  If so, it's currently one of the most depressing things I've seen since moving back to Dallas last summer.  The billboard is still there, but there's a very large condo behind it and it now just looks out of place.  Effing sprawl.

    Yep.
