is she looking for a job or to switch jobs? because the 'this job sucks because of reasons 1-750 and i need a new one " drama is a whole different level

Switching jobs. Current employer merged and we don't know if it will be viable after the dust settles. But she's injecting as much drama as she can, have no fear.

99% of "corporate assistance" makes me think of the Ralph Wiggum "I'm Helping!" line.

It's worse than you think, as I work for the state. The only reason we have this shit is because someone out there had to come up with a reason for their job to exist. Fuck that guy/gal.

  3. Here's a hearty "fuck you" to whoever came up with the idea for "continuing education" at work. Now I have to go to some bullshit class instead of doing my job. I know many people like this shit, as it allows them to slack off but I actually have work to do.

Wrestling was really popular in Iowa for years, and Dan Gable was better at it than anyone else.  He was undefeated during his time wrestling at ISU, then he won Olympic gold, then he turned heel and lead the Hawkeyes to dominance as their head coach for years.  There are few people who have so thoroughly dominated their sport at as many different levels as he did.

I've never been much of a fan, and it's a slowly petering out niche sport that no one gives a shit about outside the Plains Midwest and Pennsylvania/New Jersey.  My brother wrestled, so I spent a lot of time at youth wrestling meets as a kid.  It's about an 8 hour ordeal, in some high school gym with a bunch of assholes living vicariously through their kids, aged 5 to 12.  Thankfully my folks weren't that way (they just went to these things because my brother participated), but I was bored out of my damn mind the whole time.  Wrestlers, as a group, are actually super Aggy.  They have an inferiority complex about the popularity of basketball (which overtook wrestling in popularity in Iowa when I was growing up and is now light years beyond), and they make shirts about it.  They all have that cauliflower ear, and they generally seem like psychopaths.

The Iowa high school wrestling tournament is a sight to behold.  Every small town wrestling fan descends on downtown for a weekend of demonstrating their aggressive insularity to the rest of the world.  Each town with matching shirts, high school kids getting shitfaced in hotels downtown, and their parents going out to bars (in their matching shirts), bitching about $4 beers, and starting fights with "city faggots".

Gable lost his final match, FYI. Not trying to be a dick.

At what point do Americans wake up and confront the fact that cops are compulsive liars and simply can’t be trusted? The lies they tell even when they KNOW the cameras are rolling is simply astonishing.

You're right. With those kinds of atributes, these people should be in congress.

@SandmanI smoked a shit ton of weed in high school. Fortunately never ran into any legal issues or got caught at school (then again I didn't actually smoke at school but spent most of my senior year high at school).

First, your daughter isn't a dumbass. She's 17. Every 17 year old is a dumbass in one way or another.

Second, what consequences is she facing? Is it a school suspension type situation without legal charges? If that's the case I'd just make sure she learns from her mistake. That doesn't necessarily mean bringing the hammer down, but just making it clear that weed is still illegal (in this state, or in any state at her age) and if she makes the decision to toke then she needs to understand the potential consequences.

I've been through a lot of shit - most of it in college - but nipping it in the bud is the best you can hope for (no stupid pun intended). Tough that her mom is a smoker - but seems like her mom/your wife should at least understand the ramifications she might face if the trend continues (I don't like how much weed I smoked in high school - I'd really caution against enabling that or letting it slide). I'd hope it doesn't hurt her chance at getting into school where she wants, but one mistake at 17 tends to be pretty forgivable if she can shape up and take it as a life lesson.

Not trying to inject myself into your family dynamic (or give parenting advice), but I am recently out of the woods on all of my various high-school, college issues with the cops/administration so I feel like I have a decent perspective here.

Your daughter doesn't have to be a burn-out because she got popped at school, but that isn't a great first step and you would hope it doesn't turn into a trend. A better head on her shoulders and a good work ethic and this can hopefully be a one-time thing that ends up being a relic of the past. There are a lot of things like this that I have successfully put behind me (well, if you really want to get into it, I've done much worse shit).

It ain't going to help her admissions process - I'll tell you that much (highly doubt she doesn't have to disclose this one on applications) but it might not be that damning considering the current environment - especially depending on which schools she might look at. Some schools might see it as damning, some schools might brush it off.

Definitely feel free to PM me. I did a lot of SAT/ACT tutoring while I was in college (1550/1600 SAT and 710/800 on the GMAT) as well as giving general advice for getting through admissions (i.e. essays, how to present yourself, what helps/what hurts). I've helped dozens of kids with their scores on tests and written letters of rec to get young-ins into selective high schools.

If you're worried about her potential opportunities post high-school graduation I can give you a lot of pretty sound advice. And not looking for compensation at all, happy to help or answer any questions for a fellow Surly'er.

    Cheers

Thanks for your reply. I'm not too worried about everything as this point. She's a good student and has a plan for college and her career, which is more than I can say for myself at that age. She left campus with a friend to toke up in a neighborhood behind the school (dumb). I guess this is a common thing for kids because a resident called the cops to complain. Cops showed up as they were leaving, followed them to the school. She got 3 tickets, which is my main concern. Living in an extremely conservative state, you never know what penalty a judge might lay down on you.

  7. Shitty update: My dumbass kid didn't learn anything and was busted toking up at school. WTF. I'm more embarassed than mad but I'm still pretty upset about it.

I'm telling myself that it's not the end of the world, that there's lots of parents dealing with this, frankly dealing with much, much worse. It doesn't help me very much. Her dopehead mother isn't exactly clutching her pearls. I'm worried she's gonna be excited to maybe find a weed buddy. FML.

    What's the harm?

I tend to say yes ma'am and sir, regardless of age, and sometimes I feel as if I may be offending some middle aged women.  However, that's there issue not mine.  I think for young kids it's simply giving them a foundation of decorum. the fact that every adult they come in contact with is a man or a woman who can (and should) be addressed formally. I also open dorrs for everyone and tend to let folks into traffic.  i'm also no country bumpkin but you don't have to lack teeth to have good manners! 😉

I will call most men "sir" if I think they're actual adults, as in college aged and up. For women, I use "ma'am" if I think they're married adults or over 30, I go with "miss" for those I think are under 30 and single.

To be fair, many bottled waters with fancy names are sourced from some local municipality and then filtered a couple more times.

Evian and Fiji are more the exception than the rule.

Speaking  of, Evian started this whole bottled water scam.  When’s the last time you’ve seen a bottle of it?

CSB/ One time when I was 8 or 9, I made a pitcher of kool-aid using the bottle of Evian my mom had bought just for her. She was not amused.

    My evian-aid tased great, though.

If it's busy I'll go thru the self check w/ a whole cart of groceries (not often I'm buying a whole cart except at holidays and for parties). I can go thru the line as quick as a cashier...

Every self check I've seen has less space on the platform than the shopping cart. So eventually, I run out of room on the platform and I can't start putting the bags in my cart, lest I get the "Please return items to the loading area" message. And if you try to skip bagging, it stops you and you have to wait for Jethro or Lurleen to come over and type in their secret code. So I save the self check for when I only have 2 or 3 things.

Pictures of your wife would help us decide ...... just saying (took 4 posts to get to it, surly is slipping)

In all honesty it is more of a southern thing. Growing up in the Midwest, older neighbors, bosses, teachers, etc were Mr or Mrs Smith/Jones/Kowolski but not sir  or maam

My parents were from the Midwest (Indiana & Iowa) and I was raised to say Sir & Ma'am.

My wife changes what purse she uses for the day frequently. As a result, she cannot manage to keep track of her house key. The key is not attached to the car key because reasons. This has caused her to be locked out of the house on numerous occasions. We now simply do not lock the house. I had a caveat that at a minimum we set the alarm but doing that is too complicated apparently (thankfully mobile app solves this for me if I remember).

If any of y'all want free stuff just find my house.

My wife switches purses around on the reg. It never fails, that gift card/receipt/coupon/membership card we need at some point are in one of the other purses.
