  1. Was going to go to that show at the Bullock. I'll ask my buddy... he might know more.
  2. I haven't been but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I heard Side Bar is one of the worst offenders. But the same thread has people talking about Far Out, passing out in places in Denver, etc. No place is immune and teach her not to let her guard down. She's going to go out to all kinds of places and most of the frat-bro places will be just as bad a music venue like Empire.
  3. I guess I need to understand what happened in a year because when I heard him he sounded fine. Here's a video below from a year ago (not mine). A good friend of mine is very close to Ian and he said he has been struggling for a while with his speaking voice (pretty much can't speak). Found a post from a while re: the Botox... "Wanted to send an update on “the voice”. As many of you know, I have been working with a condition called ‘laryngeal dystonia’. It’s a neurological condition that creates unwanted tension in the vocal cords. When I first started dealing with this, my speaking voice was fine, but I was really struggling to sing. Somewhere along the line, starting about a year ago, it started to flip. Singing and speaking come from 2 different hemispheres of the brain. These last couple of months of shows have been the best my singing voice had worked since everything started. The flip side is that it is very difficult for me to speak, and the physical and mental effort it takes is exhausting. To me, it feels like something way bigger than me. It feels like my singing voice is finding freedom because it needs to. I can feel this calling deep in my spirit. It is amazing how relaxed I am when singing and I am now trying to find a path in speaking through these avenues. I have had poor results with the traditional medical world. The Botox shots in the vocal cords didn’t help much, and there is a month or so after each shot where you can’t make noise at all. Those times were the worst my voice had been(the cure more harm than the disease). I am finding my path through yoga, meditation, body awareness, self work, and advocating for myself. For those of you that have invited me to interviews and podcasts, or those that have wondered why I’m talking less after shows, this is why. It is pretty traumatic currently trying to speak, and I am working through this time to find a way physically and mentally to approach it. For now, know that I am grateful for all of you. I am so grateful to my body and my voice for reconnecting me to this higher place. To be able to sing is something I have always had deep gratitude for, but to have not had that freedom and to now see it again is deeply humbling and I wanted to share what feels like a true miracle to me. The fact that I started a non profit in SMASH with no health concerns at the time, and then fell into the most challenging personal health issue is no accident." That sucks... hope he gets that sorted out because from what I've heard, he's a good dude. On a side note, if you're going to get your daughter into the local scene, Far Out Lounge often has all ages shows. Empire has lots of good bands that are typically 18+ and I think Mohawk is the same. I usually don't pay attention to the ages for obvious reasons. I know Sahara Lounge is the same. Hey... on a side note... anyone been to Barton Spring Pool this past week and seen if the diving board is back?
  4. I love BSP proper and go there a lot but Barking Springs is a shit hole
  5. Yeah so I agree I do take risks but have found that live shows make all the difference. Subpar Snatch honestly might not make my rotation on Spotify but I will gladly catch one of their live shows. Funny... the name is what originally caught my eye just like another band, Chancla Fight Club. Great names! @jimmyjazz yeah so it is Jane Ellen Bryant and Leo as in Daniel Leopold. Established local musicians.
  6. Not been a great year business-wise so not sure what we're going to do. No flying for sure. Current candidates are reachable by roadtrip Crested Butte Taos Maybe Wolf Creek (?) OR considering a five day, five mountain mini-trip with my son in NM (not in this order) Taos Sipapu Ski Santa Fe Angel Fire Red River I don't know. Hope the snow doesn't suck in Taos like it did last year. Our trip to Taos was spend skiing the same runs over and over again and a few hikes up to ski Juarez since it was the only thing open . Random photo from last year in Montgenevre with a fort from the "Lingne Maginot Alpine" in France
  7. Welp... https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/article/shipley-donuts-acquisition-20789601.php
  8. Oasis, El Arroyo, and Don's BBQ
  9. You are shooting way low my friend. If you're in that price range, you're probably in, I don't know, Pearland? Y'all, Houston is just going back to the Houston of our childhood. You know... the good ole days... Always funny when people talk about it being safer when they were kids. Sure it was. BTW Austin peaked in 1982 at 15.88. Last year Austin was 7.25. https://www.nytimes.com/1983/09/17/us/7-texas-cities-are-in-top-20-in-murder-per-capita.html
  10. He just listens to the Jerky Boys on repeat. Maybe.
  11. Interesting... felt very different in SW Austin last night. I was out around 10 PM and it felt amazing. Checked my phone and it said 78. I'll take it.
  12. Well, feels like this is all me talking into the void but, that's OK... maybe someone will pick up on a band or two here. Went to Hot Summer Nights for two nights. One night by myself where I got to see what I wanted and the second night with my wife so I had to filter the bands to see. Case in point... I would have loved to have gone to see Pussy Gillette on Saturday but definitely not someone my wife would want to see. If you like lots of local musicians for free and missed this year's edition of Hot Summer Nights, keep a lookout for HAAM Day in September and Free Week usually in January. Also, here's a link I found on reddit that allows you to sort what is going on around town - https://pushgig.com/ So, here's what I saw... Alma Muneca - Empire Control Room - Spanish-language electronic/dance/post-punk music. Singer is a smoke show... vocals were OK but the backing band (two guys on synth and a drummer) were excellent. I think they are playing a show in two weeks with DAIISTAR (strong recommendation on DAIISTAR) Semihelix - The 13th Floor - Catchy indie rock trio. Good show and energy. Not a standout per se but I'd see them again. Daze - Mohawk (outside) - Shoegaze band from Houston. I love the wall of guitar sounds a shoegaze band can bring. Good show, great light show from the crew at Mohawk. Would see again. Geda - Mohawk (inside) - felt like a late 80s EBM show (Electronic Body Music, not Electronic Dance Music) with two silhouttes on stage with their synths playing in front of weird projected images. Liked it but you have to be a fan of the old EBM/Industrial scene to get it, I think. Subpar Snatch - The 13th Floor - finally got to see them. Great show! Amazing energy and fire from the band. Would absolutely go see them again. Prehuman - Chess Club - Caught the last bit of their set. Like Chess Club as a venue although it is small and always cramped. Anyway, they have more of an up-and-coming shoegaze sound. Seen them four times in various venues over the past year. Bartly - Marlow - We were mostly on the patio and at the bar so I didn't get a good feel. Great energy and talent but too many covers for me (I'm not a cover band person. Sorry) Cast of Thousands - Empire Control Room - Only caught a couple of songs. Indy rock. There's potential here but feels like they need more work bringing it all together. Just my opinion. J'cuuzi - Mohawk (outside) - Y'all... I went in with expectations of a freakish show and it absolutely delivered. Really don't know how to describe them. Here is how they describe themselves, "Avant-garde mutant pop performance group". Yup. Jane Leo - The 13th Floor - This was the third time we've seen Jane Leo. They've got a great infections 80's synth sound to me influenced by the likes of Berlin. They're always a solid show. Rococo Disco - Stubb's Indoors - Pleasant surprise. Good vibes and crowd with an R&B tinged party sound. Bands I wished I had seen but could not due to various reasons: Queen Serene - couldn't go Thursday. A band I'm always glad to catch. Shoegaze/rock-driven wall of sound. Almost hypnotic to me. A bit noisy. I love it. I did spot them in the audience at one show. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - Still have not seen them... hear great things about the live shows. Timing is always off for me. Daydream Twins - Heard they are a fantastic local shoegaze band Font - apparently they had to cancel so had to scratch them off the schedule Andrew Cashen and the Disciples of Creation - Great great live show. Caught them at the Drop in earlier in the summer Nuclear Daisies - more shoegaze. Apparently was a great show at Mohawk. Gus Baldwin and the Sketch - Punk/rock/lots of energy. One day... wife would not have been interested at all Mugger - Female-fronted punk band Subpar Snatch at The 13th Floor:
  13. Yeah, I mean this is really good news!
  14. I finally read the article and, man, I hope that whole crew all talks to each other and collectively agrees to F off to somewhere else. I mean, the list of names tells me I am very supportive of them leaving including some D-bag who calls himself Lucky Blue Smith. Oh... and how I know Tim Dillon does not know a thing about Austin, "'It's not the live music capital of America. It's three heroin addicts busking with guitars. There's zero talent here in any capacity,' he raged." What a total moron.
  15. It is written
  16. Jackhole left four years ago. WTF
  17. We were out there jumping off of a dock into Lake Austin yesterday. The water is still looking browner than usual but hopefully that clears up soon. Was super choppy on Sunday... boat traffic + the wind really kicking up.
  18. Congratulations on becoming a member of the annoying "Old Austin" crowd
  19. Hello. As your resident Italian I would like to remind you that Gianni Infantino is Swiss.
  20. Be sure to tell your friends
  21. Found this band while digging through a playlist. Guess they played last night at Hot Summer Nights
