Hasn’t the cost of tech dropped?  A lot of shit that was expensive in 85 can be bought cheap now.

Not textbooks.  Holy smokes, every one of them seems to be $200 or higher now (and I don't think the digital copies are any cheaper).

  2. I'd also like to see what percentage of campus infrastructure & hiring in the 1980's was funded by oil and what was funded by general revenue, compared to now.  (They could be identical for all I know.  Is it all PUF funds?)

That’s percentages of funding. I’m talking dollars.  If costs quadruple and state funding only doubles, the percentage from state funding is cut in half.

Does anyone have the year by year allocation to Texas from the state?

    Come on.

    47% of $503M = $236M

    12% of $2,975M = $357M

When you have 94 of them, that shit kind of adds up.  5 or 6 million every year starts adding up to real money.  But fuck it, we can just raise tuition.

$100 per student per year is too much to actually serve our state?  Really?

    Come the fuck on.

"The claim that “diverse perspectives” lead to academic breakthroughs is a fundamental myth of identity politics. Academic progress—curing diseases, scientific and engineering breakthroughs, the invention of new technologies, and all other advances—is the result of excellence, not “diversity.” Marie Curie did not discover radioactivity because she was a woman but because she was a first-rate scientist."

Curie was among 5,000 women secretly educated at The Flying University because Warsaw only accepted men.

But i do see his point.  His fear of the university being subverted from within.

That might be a good argument if the only academic breakthroughs to be had were technical (but even then it would be a stupid argument).

I want the House to change hands, because they start the impeachment process. If Democrats control both houses and remove him, I'm afraid the witch hunt claims will rise to a whole new level and we will become an even more divided nation.

If you don't think this ends in something that approaches civil war, you're not thinking hard enough.  I don't know that it's an outcome which should be overly weighted in the calculus, either.  The other option might just come down to authoritarianism, and that's worse.

I actually like that Ryan does Bryan cover.  Especially when he kicks into overdrive on the last chorus.

Notice at the top of the video he's apparently castigating someone in the audience for requesting "Freebird".  On my mother's grave, I can attest to the fact that Ryan once yelled "Freebird" at me & my band while we were slogging through our shitty set at The Hole In The Wall.  Et tu, Ryan?

  8. Ultimately it doesn't matter whether or not POTUS can be indicted if the Special Counsel investigating him doesn't agree.

I don't know if this has been verified or if we're still going off Rudy's word, but if Mueller ain't bringing indictments against Trump then there's nothing more to talk about regarding the issue.

The history of the U.S.  Damn all those other slacking Presidents.

The Germans surrendered less than a month into Harry S. Truman's administration.  The Japanese followed within 3 more months.  No President can (or should) take credit for everything that happens on his young watch, but I'm thinking Harry outdid Donald.

  10. Well, our football team is self sustaining.  Every other team is on the dole.

My real point is that one should not hold every position or even every department to a standard based on profit and loss.  A university has myriad functions and responsibilities, which in the case of a public institution, include service to all who contribute to its funding.

Slow your roll.  Tillerson was as big a hack as anyone else in this administration.

Are any of you going to actually process the intent of Hank's post?

Berkeley spends $20 million per year on the office of diversity and inclusion.  For 40,000 students that $500 per head per year.  That's not how I'd spend $500 if I were a student.

Texas spends $24 million per year on coaching salaries.  Do the math.
