  1. I like the shillings. Those are some of the coins with the highest purity silver (92.5%, 'Sterling') minted anywhere. (Except the last one, Great Britain dropped the silver content in 1920.)
  2. VF is probably a fair grade for those gold coins that futureman has. The $1 maybe is a lesser grade as the word 'Dollars' on the back looks worn. But otherwise they all look nice, so they ought to have collector value more than gold value. Whether a buyer offers more, who knows. I like them! I like the Republic of Texas note a lot too! I have been more interested in paper than coins. The little picture at the left ('vignette') is of Burnet escaping the Mexican army at Galveston Bay. The note was not actually signed by Sam Houston himself. It was signed by a secretary on his behalf, he had better things to worry about than signing all of the nations money by hand. It is not fake, it is his official signature, but it was signed by another person. I have another note of that type, mine is signed 'Mirabeau B Lamar', I do not know who actually signed it though.
  3. It could be (probably is) a very zoomed in image from far away. The relative height of each building in the image would be proportional to its height. With Notre Dame spire at 300 ft, the Eiffel at 1000 ft, about 3x as tall, and the Eiffel looks about 3x as tall in that pic.
  4. You should probably avoid trying to buy one in Greece. Several nations have laws against exporting ancient coins, on the grounds they are an ancient archeological item. I do not know about Greece but I'd buy one here. The ideal example for you, might be one authenticated (and put into a plastic 'slab') so you know it is real, but graded as damaged from mounting. It would be damaged goods to a coin collector, and so cheaper, and you won't mess up any more value by mounting it yourself.
  5. I think that any kind of mounting will damage the numismatic value, even with no hole. That does not mean you should not mount it, just figure that you would lose money if you resold it.
  6. Not just the disk, but the event horizon. (I guess the outside just up to the event horizon.) Needed a telescope the size of the Earth, so it was not so easy to get the photo.
  7. I don't see driverless cars as fixing Lyft/Uber's finances. If we do make that switch, that means that Lyft/Uber have to finance those vehicles themselves, instead of having drivers that are desperate or bad at math do it for them. And how will more vehicles to handle surges work? Right now, the drivers finance that, when more decide to drive when they make more. With a driverless fleet, it will be up to Lyft/Uber to pay to have those extra vehicles available. I think a driverless world is likely a lot WORSE for Lyft/Uber than what we have now.
  8. You will discover where old school buses go when they are no longer needed by the school districts! Lake Atitlan is cool, you can get a boat ride around the lake to check out the smaller villages around the lake, which is a nice day trip.
  9. Yep, one of the 8000 ft peaks in Texas, and a county highpoint. I got to the trailhead in my Honda Civic sedan, but I would not make that drive again with that vehicle. The trail-like part of the upper section is a lot nicer than the road-like part, as others noted. I have seen this trail rated as Class 3 meaning some actual climbing involved, but the Class 3 part was literally one move, about 4 feet of climbing, and totally unexposed. There can be a lot of ladybugs.
  10. Mine were not really painful, at least during the procedure (I did ache a little for a few days afterwards). The worst for me was it was just creepy sitting there for 2 hours while the dentist is digging away at you. That did not hurt but I was ready to be done with it for sure.
  11. One of my climbing guides, who has climbed Everest several times, said that what worked best for him to pack on the pounds beforehand, was chocolate milk. I have not tried it myself. You will be getting to Whitney pretty early, I think. I would expect plenty of snow and ice. Good luck!
  12. It seems that Mount Whitney is not quite exactly on the trail, but really close? You don't want to miss that one! When on the calendar do you expect to get to that point?
  13. Good luck Biff! I have heard that the PCT is the coolest of the really long distance trails in the USA. Enjoy the mountain views.
  14. Does the Governor have the authority to fire the BOR at will?
  15. The BOR has not necessarily changed course yet. They told Loh to bring the coach back, or be fired. Loh first went along and HE changed his mind. The BOR has not rescinded their threat to fire him, afaik.
  16. I think it is sufficient to bring it to a boil at all. Going the whole 'full boil for three minutes' will make you 100% sure you killed everything, but if the whole volume gets to boiling at all, you are good. So coffee makers are ok, thank god.
  17. My Bank of America card has this, they call it ShopSafe. The card is not super great so I do not use it that much, but it is free, and I am happy enough. I really like the disposable number feature.
  18. I have stayed at a motel in Carlsbad NM (and maybe also Van Horn TX) and done the summit hike from that base. About an hour drive before you get to the trailhead, but no big deal. I am not much a fan of the campground at the park, almost all of the sites have zero shade, so if it is hot the sun can be a beating.
  19. To clarify some terms that are often confused: 'Free climbing' means that you are roped in, tied to a belayer and an anchor. But all your vertical ascent is by you climbing yourself. The rope system is insurance, but does nothing to haul yourself up. If you fall, you get caught by your belayer. This is how Tommy and Kevin climbed this route. 'Aid climbing' means that, some of the time, you use the rope/anchor to pull yourself up, i.e. on a super blank part of the wall. So the rope system is essential to the climbing. This is how this route used to be always (and still mostly is) climbed. 'Free solo climbing' means that you have no rope and no anchor. If you fall, you hit the deck, 3000 feet below in this case. The climbing is mechanically the same as 'free climbing', but the stakes are far higher.
  20. Another plus to Fredericksburg, is that Enchanted Rock is nearby. That is one of my favorite place for hiking near Austin. It is about 2 hours from Austin but much closer to FB. There are lots of fun granite domes to hike up and down. The park fills up quick so getting there early gives you the best chance to get in.
  21. Since today is World Snek Day, I figured I'd post this pic I took a few years ago in Tanzania. Puff adder at work.
  22. Rijstaffel at an Indonesian restaurant is a good dinner. The problem with Dutch local cuisine (except the Indonesian part) is that Dutch cuisine sucks.
  23. A little disappointed with my Capitol 10K time, I was hoping to place in the top 1000, but my time of 49:18 put me in place 1223, so I did not make it. I was ok with my effort level though.
