  1. I haven’t been in years and need to go back. The new-ish chef was at Sylvain for a long time and earned several James Beard noms (and is a great person), so I’ve got to imagine the program is as good as ever.
  2. Was back in town for the holidays and did a solid po boy tour. Parasol’s remains tops for roast beef. Mahony’s, which used to suck, was recently purchased by the group that owns Sylvain and the Chloe. They claimed to improve quality - even using Duong Phong bread for a minute - but my shrimp was dry. Guy’s is the best for shrimp anyway (uses a cornmeal matter). Casamentos serves an oyster loaf, which is technically not a po boy but IMO the buttery toast is a better vessel. Oh, and if you are staying off Jackson, you should check out Stein’s, the sandwich king of New Orleans.
  3. Nice attempt on the dunk, but I live in San Francisco and simply made the mistake of assuming New York’s law aligned with California’s. In my observation, the social etiquette around lighting up in public has eroded over time but YMMV I suppose.
  4. It’s not legal in public, it’s just that assholes don’t give a fuck and police don’t enforce anything. I, too, am extremely tired of it in parks and sidewalks.
  5. Jewel of…the South? That’s a skill issue. Chris Hannah is, no exaggeration, one of the best bartenders in the world and a great all-around dude.
  6. Well, Apple’s most recent 10-K was 60 pages, and most 8-Ks are about half a page, so it’s not quite that bad.
  7. Got off because he is connected and the city is corrupt. The dude who beat him (as in, walked away, found a crow bar, practiced swinging, and then attacked him from behind a while later) was acquitted because the average SF juror is a moron, although he was charged a month later for attacking another guy with a screwdriver and a guitar and I guess finally went back to Louisiana. So all in all this really did have everything.
  8. Having a young kid, if we moved to Sonoma it would be to Sebastopol.
  9. Let’s not be bashful, Lamorinda.
  10. Yeah I don’t think it’s fair to call Saffron simply Indian. It’s in the genre of “New Orleans restaurant”, not just in the Creole influence in its cooking but in that it’s the kind of restaurant that only kind of makes sense in New Orleans. Sort of like how Clancy’s would just feel out of place in Houston.
  11. How else do you think we move the homeless around? They usually slow trains after earthquakes and that’s already a shitshow, gonna be a mess with them closed.
  12. Tsunami warning in SF canceled as expected, good thing too because traffic was about to be a shitshow.
  13. One of my favorite bumper stickers is “Mill Valley: Where Democrats live like Republicans.”
  14. Didn’t he become a democrat like a decade ago?
  15. The immediate post-election reaction among many moderate liberal talking heads like Josh Barro, Noah Smith, and Ezra Klein has been to take the gloves off and blame Democratic dysfunction in blue cities as indicative of the party’s broader governance problems. I’m already seeing some local politicians running with the new “abundance economy” buzzphrase, as well as literally and figuratively dropping the pronouns.
  16. Mama’s in North Beach is the famous spot. Otherwise Texas Exes meets at S.F. Brewing for the game.
  17. But why? Michelin has tried to expand and adapt, but at the end of the day it’s a French company that reviews restaurants through the lens of French haute cuisine and, especially at the 2+ star level, is beholden to those standards for the sake of consistency across markets. Ambitious Texas restaurants will now gun using the Michelin formula and get there soon enough.
  18. No, they are called Left NIMBYs. It’s a nonpartisan dynamic that creates some strange bedfellows, like Compton progressives and Beverly Hills’ MAGA mayor uniting in LA to block upzoning.
  19. No Name.
  20. Shaya was canceled years ago and Revolution is irrelevant. Get a rez for Saint Germain, the most ambitious restaurant in the city, or Saffron or Mamou at the bar. Or if you want to go old school, Clancy’s at the bar. Make friends with Garth. Peche at the bar remains fantastic. Nowadays that is my rotation when I go home. Have only been to Dakar in his earlier, much more casual iterations but really enjoyed it.
  21. Hand it out in downtown San Francisco and other open air drug markets throughout the country. The overdose problem has been insane.
  22. Can confirm (and it was well more than 50).
  23. He had another charge outstanding in Tracy. https://sfstandard.com/2024/09/04/ricky-pearsall-shooting-juvenile-court/
  24. Yes, the shooter is a 17 year old kid from Tracy who drove to the city to gang bang. SFPD was literally feet away and immediately apprehended him. I walk through that intersection to work every day. Lots of things one can say about the city but this was just random. Can we just shit on the Central Valley instead?
