Surly kids who can't get into UT
Great point. Here's what Gemini tells me: Seems like the only mildly questionable one is Hope, with "only" a 190 bed hospital and 500 nurses.

Surly kids who can't get into UT
My senior wants a small school, far away from home, with a good nursing program. So far she has a yes from Elon (NC), Hope (MI), Belmont (TN), and Florida Southern. We have a little saved, and plan to continue to contribute what we're currently paying for private school, but unfortunately her preferences pretty much guarantee that we're not going to be able to cover the whole bill. She fully understands that for a degree like nursing, cheaper is generally better--so long as Licensure Examination pass rates are high-- but she is also adamant about out of state small schools, so 1+1=potato. I believe that vibe and feel are extraordinarily important, so as much as I'd like to steer her towards the top ten Nursing program 5 miles from our house at in-state tuition that's a slam dunk for admission, we're going to have to let her make the choice that's right for her. If there's any consolation, she's at the top tier academically at all the schools she likes, so full rides are in play. She'll head for some interviews in a couple weeks. It's a crazy ride.

There’s a practical utility to choosing a college where your peers aren't going (clean slate, breaking or changing reputation, avoiding people you don't like or memories you don't want to be reminded of, etc). I suspect though for a lot of kids, especially for those applying to larger schools who feel this way, it's more about the idea of pioneering-- Carving your own path where others haven't walked. There's an allure of Individualism that can be adversely affected by any sense of commonality. For the former, you can easily make arguments why it doesn't really matter, like "you'll never even see them". For the latter though, I can't see a reason or rationale that will be convincing.

Running Through Walz to Fix America - Democratic VP Nominee
Sure, When the whole state votes on a single race it trends blue, but we're still a hell of a lot more purple than most. State House is R + 2 (albeit with 2 vacancies that will likely tie it). State Senate is DFL +1. U.S. House is 4 and 4. U.S. Senate and President are pretty locked down for the Dems, but if Klobuchar doesn't enter the race (I think she will) Gov could easily, even probably, flip to red.

Running Through Walz to Fix America - Democratic VP Nominee
Oh I don't know, maybe the same state that elected 4 non-D governor in that same span, totaling 24 years?

Running Through Walz to Fix America - Democratic VP Nominee
They won't admit it, but I don't think the Republicans are happy today at all. The goal was to weaken Walz to ensure that he would lose. Now we're going to get the biggest non-incumbent gubernatorial landslide in the history of Minnesota.

Things not going well in Venezuela
"Twitter in the War Room" is a kick ass band name.

Not a spoiler, because this article came out a week ago... https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/stranger-things-volume-2-the-duffer-brothers-interview-1236458696/ DUFFER: It’s not Game of Thrones. We’re not in Westeros. I love Game of Thrones, but it’s just a very different type of show than that. There’s not going to be a Red Wedding situation. I think some things happen in the finale that are very surprising, but we’re not trying to shock or upset anyone. I hope by the time people get to the end of the finale that it just feels like there’s something inevitable about what happens, and that it doesn’t feel painful but feels satisfying.

Time for another ‘my dog is awesome’ thread
My wife and Chester (the lab) have a morning ritual the ends in them cuddling together on a chair in the living room. Today Bruno-- who generally avoids full body contact, preferring to be pet from a distance-- climbed in her lap before Chester could take his rightful position. He was so sad.

Surly kids who can't get into UT
My nephew from Florida came up to the Twin Cities a few weeks ago with his dad to visit a couple schools and visit his sister at Carleton. On the way back from Northfield, he noticed how dark it was relative to the time. He didn't say as much, but I believe he noped-out at that exact moment.

Not my kid, per se, but our best friends' daughter is a freshman there this year. She also got the merit scholarship which essentially gives her in-state tuition. She loves it. Joined a sorority right away and loves her classes.

Non-Texas weather. The all-encompassing thread
-28 is the coldest I've experienced, back in 2019. I distinctly remember because my furnace quit at the same time. That was... unpleasant. Luckily my gas fireplace and some space heaters allowed us to stay in the house for the 3 days it took to figure it out. Lots of snow today. They're guessing 8 inches.

Winona Ryder sounds like Marge Simpson.
