  1. I’m all for mail voting. How do they prevent people from mailing in a ballot then showing up to vote in person? I’m sure there are creative ways..
  2. I think the concern is that they are filthy little carriers.
  3. I still think that we can do big things. We are a patient in the ER. We need a heart transplant and multiple other procedures in order to live a long life. But right now, we need treatment for the gunshot wound to our head. Democrats are seeing the present situation as a crisis that must be dealt with before moving on and thinking about other things. Once trump is out of office, liberals will be more willing to entertain progressive ideas.
  4. My book still has trump as the favorite at -140. Crazy to see that number stay so stable with these polls coming out.
  5. Trump is giving billions of our grandkids tax money to corporations with virtually no plan to ensure that it doesn’t end up in the pockets of those in the c suite. Seems like a good message to be hitting on right now.
  6. In 2012 Obama won Florida by less than 1%. Didn’t realize it was so close until I just looked.
  7. The illusion that they are taking a well thought out, measured approach is important to the fraud. Talked to a physician’s assistant yesterday who works in Austin. She’s seeing a steady stream of covid cases at her practice and seemed pretty demoralized.
  8. I will never mentally count Florida as anything other than a loss. If it goes our way, we were probably going to win anyway.
  9. When was the last time that an above average hurricane season was not predicted. Seems like they say that every year.
  10. We will probably never know but I think there will be pressure from above to classify deaths as something other than covid.
  11. I read this post in the voice of the guy who sits behind me at football games. He always wants to go for it on 4th down no matter the situation. Down 2, easy FG to take the lead? Nope, by god, we should go for the touchdown. If we can’t get it, we don’t deserve to win anyway. Sometimes you just have to play the hand you are dealt. And we, as a country, were dealt a 7-2 off suit of dotard death cultists. We can still win the hand, but it’s going to take some strategic maneuvering. Go all in before the flop and our bluff gets called every time. Ill respond more later about where bridges can be built, and progressives should be a large part of that equation. I want a big Democratic tent that is guided by liberal ideals. The vast majority of non-voters agree with many of these ideals and need to be a part of the long term coalition that we build. But, I don’t want people that aren’t far left on every policy position run out of the tent being vilified as right wing monsters. That does happen now.
  12. The ability to coalition build is what’s needed. Many of the progressive left are idealists to the point that they alienate even those that are left of center. If there has been no other lesson learned from the transition from obama to trump it is that elections have consequences. Trump isn’t the fault of progressives, but democrats inability to work together to build a winning coalition that both excites the base and is rooted in the practical realities of what it takes to win elections. We can’t want everything all at once, which is hard for some people to accept. The reality is that we share this country with a shitload of trumpkins and people who are sympathetic enough to him to stay home instead of voting for a democrat. There is no quick fix and you can’t implement progressive policies until you start winning elections. Drop the purity tests. Find issues that all democrats can agree on. Mobilize voters and fundraise. Win elections far and wide, turning red states blue. Keep shifting the narrative to the left over time as demographics change.
  13. They end up at nearby schools that are also half full. Class sizes won’t changes too much. Where you save money is only maintaining one building, and going from 2 to 1 on principal, assistant principal, art teacher, music teacher, pe teacher, librarian, etc. I work at a school near those you mentioned where the pta funds multiple teaching positions that helps the school function. Robin Hood is a joke. There are schools on the border building water parks with our money while our schools fall apart and our businesses are taxed out of existence.
  14. With four closing next year, I doubt anything else happens for a while. We will be getting a new superintendent in the next couple of months. Doubt he/she is going to come in and close schools burning all that political capital. It’s a move you make on the way out like cruz did.
  15. Completely agree with you here. Full, efficient schools that are modernized, is the best path. Many schools can be closed and the students can stay nearby. Less than half a mile in many cases so you really aren’t losing the idea of neighborhood schools. The average school in my vertical team is over 60 years old and needs quite a bit of work.
  16. Not really sure where to begin because this is all wrong. That would fuck Austin isd even more since revenue is tied to students. Losing students is a big part of the current problem. The vast majority of students at the schools that are closing are poor. They aren’t going to private schools but charters are competition. AISD isn’t raising your property taxes and has no current bond plans. If we ever decide to do a bond, it won’t have anything to do with Adler.
  17. Bonds for new construction in a fast growing area. That includes schools and other projects.
  18. A lot of that was cuts in the estimated growth in recapture payments. 612.2 million is the current estimate for fy 2020. By far, more than any other district in the state. The total for the state is estimated to be around 1.9 billion, so we are footing about 1/3 of the total bill for the state.
  19. Not sure where you are getting your info. We are closing Metz, Brooke, Pease, and Sims.
  20. Sorry man. Covid?
  21. It seems like everybody is in this market purely on FOMO right now. When things go south people are going to cash out and fast. It doesn’t help that a number of people are sitting on gains from the rebound that they aren’t going to risk losing. It’s like a game of musical chairs where everybody expects there to be fewer chairs after each round but they all stay put. Then half of them are going to get removed all at once and everybody is standing around looking at each other. Other than my long term holds, I’m just selling puts with 5 day expiration dates. This can trade sideways forever as far as I’m concerned.
  22. Lots of fundraising talk in the last couple of days. Is there any way that this race is impacted by money or are we beyond that considering the constant media exposure and divisiveness of trump? I don’t see ad buys swaying people. GOTV in swing states is where a good chunk of my money would go.
  23. In general I agree. It will be a much tougher task as the burbs go blue though.
  24. Although Patrick is a loon who should be thrown off a bridge, he isn’t a completely foolish politician. He knew that 2017 did a number on his reputation, even within his own party. That was the last session that republicans could do whatever they want and barely even pretend democrats exist. Patrick wasted one of their last opportunities on his weird agenda that nobody else really cared about. In 2019 the makeup of the legislature was more democratic and he dialed it back significantly. Passing a pro public education bill was the top house priority and he didn’t have the senate screw things up even though we all know he’s against the “liberal government indoctrination camps”. In 2021 and beyond, the legislature will continue to be more blue. It will be interesting how he reacts to his loss of power. The house will be blue sometime in the next few sessions...
