What a great month of basketball he's put together!

He really has a chance to string together a couple great games in the tourney and give himself a chance to wind up on an NBA team.

    @Catdaddyhorn and @jimmyjazz

here is the original post which was deemed to be so eye rollingly insane:

conclusion: we are a middle-of-the-pack Big XII team that neither punches too high above nor too low below its own weight. any game against a clearly inferior team should be won; any game against a good team is a toss up; and don't hold your breath on beating any great teams.

either give your first honest, adult response to this idea, or shut. the. fuck. up. if you disagree with this take, then say your piece without being an insulting fucking jackass. i personally don't see how anyone who has followed this team throughout this season could take too much issue with the above statement, but if you do take issue with it then at least post like a fucking adult. no matter what you do, get the fuck over the absolutely insane idea that you are not acting like peak Derka in this thread with your anger, belligerence, and insulting posts. you are the one who took it there and yet you sit there acting as if you're the fucking  reasonable one. fuck out of here.

The issue with said post is the insinuation that a mid-tier Big XII team is somehow a mid-tier national team. You reinforce this when you say "should win against shit teams, might win against good teams, won't beat great teams". That usually describes middle of the pack Power 5 teams EVERY year, but is a disingenuous evaluation of the Big XII this year.

This year the Big XII is :

    Elite - Baylor

Great - Ku, TX, WVU, OSU,

    Good - Tech, OU

    Fair - TCU

    Poor - KSU, ISU

There's are 4 elite teams in the country - Zags, Baylor, Michigan, Illinois. The middle-of-the-pack Big XII teams are ranked 10,11,12,13. Because the AP does what it always does, those four teams slide down a peg when they all go .500 against each other.

There are about 10-12 Great teams behind those Elite teams (including Texas) that I outlined above, and you decreed that every single one was better than Texas. That's bullshit. Why do I think Texas is better than those teams? 6 wins against teams in the current AP Top 25, and zero losses to teams outside the Top 25. Zero. How the fuck does that translate to "any game against a good team is a toss up" ?

And all of that is before allowing for extenuating circumstances that you refuse to acknowledge. You continue to harp on the team's poor performance over a 1 week period immediately following a COVID outbreak that resulted in no practices, no preparation, and who knows what kind of physical toll . And even with all that, we lost a 1 pt game to OU and a 2-OT game to OSU.

If you want to talk shit about this team, talk about giving away huge leads at home vs. WVU & TTU, or the shit sandwich we dropped in Lubbock. Those are really the only wtf losses on the season.

It's unfortunate that your desire to shit on this team prevents you from actually enjoying this team, or acknowledging that we've had a really good season. Outside of the aforementioned Top 4 teams, I fully expect that we are just a bout a pick 'em or better against every other team in the country.

Any team that gets positive tests after tomorrow is DQed from March Madness, so let's not hope for this.

This is not necessarily 100% correct. Apparently it's a little more complicated.

According to Dan Gavitt, the NCAA's senior vice president for basketball, each team will only need five players at minimum to be eligible to play.

[E]ven if they were to be compromised in some way, if they have those five players, they still should have the opportunity to compete rather than be replaced [...] If they fall below the threshold of five, of course they would not be able to play by playing rule, nor by tournament protocols."

Schools have to inform the NCAA if they can meet the tournament protocols by Saturday evening, according to RTD's David Teel.

I'm glad we didn't play KU earlier, and have them infect our team just before the big dance. I'm sure OU now has the 'Rona ,but won't actually start getting positive tests until next Wednesday or so, and then they'll get removed from the tourney.

Oh well. That's what you get for sucking, OU.

name the last time i was wrong for being pessimistic about a Shaka Smart team. not that my last post even qualifies as "pessimistic". not even you can deny that Hornlover's description of all of the teams ahead of us as complete garbage who nobody should worry about is dumb. Shaka's entire coaching career screams "do not he optimistic!!!!" and yet you continue to find yourself bemused at my lack of sunshine pumping.

I never said any of them were garbage. I rightfully pointed out that not a single one of those teams has a better resume this season against teams currently in the top 25 than the Longhorns.

Many of those teams collected quad 1 wins in front of empty arenas on the road vs. teams ranked 40-75. Big fucking deal. Find me a team outside of the top 6 that can match our 6 wins against the AP top 25 (KU, KU, OSU, TECH, WVU, OU).

And our worst loss is a 1 pt loss to Oklahoma after the team contracted COVID and held practice with 2 fucking players the day before the game.

You can cry about our KenPom rankings dropping from 4 to 25, but that's what happens when you have to slog it out against teams like WVU, Tech, KU, OSU, OU, & Baylor every night. TCU would probably be a bubble team if they were in any other conference.

I'm sorry that Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Houston, and Purdue cause you to dribble pee down your leg like you're Mack Brown, cause they just scare you to death.

Sure, they're good teams, but not a single one is demonstrably better than other teams we've already beat this year or better than Texas.

Unrelated question but why in the fuck is the tournament's first weeked Friday through Monday instead of Thursday through Sunday?

Fucks my shit up because I scheduled Thursday and Friday off as usual and cannot take off Monday.

I promise you we will get the Saturday/Monday slot with our games during the day because of it.

    FUCK !

Because the play-in game has to be in the bubble, and they can't start flying to Indy until after selection Sunday, and they have to check every single person going into the bubble for COVID. It's a bit of a logistical nightmare, and impressive that they'll be able to pull it off.

i feel like tonight's game just reinforces my earlier point: most previous iterations of Shaka teams could lose to anyone and then beat anyone on any given night. this team is much more predictable- we very likely won't beat more the better teams in the country, we will very likely beat any team that's not very good, and we will be a coin flip to beat teams #10-40-ish in the country. feels like round of 32 is a floor, and S16 is a ceiling, barring upsets on the other side of the bracket.

Outside of the top 4, I'm pretty confident Texas could beat any of those teams.

Alabama - one win over a team currently ranked in the top 25 (Ark - they split the series). Lost to WKU at home.

Iowa - Probably favored against us, but I'd take my chances.

Houston - Garbage schedule. Not scared of them.

Arkansas - Possibly legit. They're certainly hot right now. Lost to Ok State, though.

Other Big XII Teams (except Baylor) - We can beat any of em. Have proved it already

Virginia - Tony Bennett's defense and pace probably keeps us at 45 points. Would be a beating to watch.

Purdue - Their lone win over a current top 25 team was 2 months ago against Ohio State. Ohio State is much better now

Fla State - They beat Virginia. And lost to Notre Dame and UNC. Not a great team.

Subway is the worst offender on the list. It has been determined in Ireland that their bread is in fact not bread. In California there's a CA lawsuit alleging their tuna is actually not tuna and is yet unidentifiable by a food lab. So, like, I get improper food handling, but creating things for consumption that maybe shouldn't be consumed feels like an automatic bottom tier ranking.

This is quite the ill-informed take. Subway is garbage, but not for either of the reasons you list.

    1. Their bread doesn't qualify for the bread tax break because it has too much added sugar (we'll get to that below). It still has half the sugar that McDonald's hamburger bun has.

    2. The tuna fish lawsuit is hilariously frivolous. C'mon man. Citing a publicity stunt lawsuit with no merits?

They entered the market as a "healthy" alternative to fast food burgers, but really just have very cheap processed deli meats loaded with fat and sodium, high sugar breads, and fatty/sugary dressings. On top of all that, the cheap lunchmeats and cheap veggies are pretty bland. The bread is usually fresh and tastes delicious (due to all the sugar probably).

The availability of salads/veggies makes it at least possible to get something healthy-ish to eat there. If you're not going to at least try to eat healthy at Subway, then why bother eat there at all? But if you are trying to eat healthy you're better off finding a local salad or sandwich joint with better quality, healthier choices, and tastier ingredients.

Chipotle's food is way higher quality than Subway, and tastes way better too. Could it be better flavored/more authentic ? Sure. But it's fast food marketed to the masses. No need to stray too far into the exotic spices. Yeah, they completely fucked up the food safety at multiple stores, but hopefully they learned their lesson (hah, yeah right).  I still eat Blue Bell, and their A/C leaked listeria directly into the giant cauldrons of Homemade Vanilla, in front of all the corporate food inspectors. It wasn't just forcing Rosa to come in while she's sick, so she could sneeze her norovirus into the cliantro-lime rice.

at the end of the regular season, this screen cap pretty succinctly summarizes who we are as a team:

    A39471D2-BFD4-496E-9CD7-591138924F0D.jpeg

the general sentiment around here seems to have gone from "oh no we suck again!" to "hey we just had a pretty good season!" based on our "strong" 6-2 finish. the thing is, we didn't suddenly start playing much better than before, our schedule was just super soft down the stretch. so for me, everything you need to know about Texas is in this screen cap. to summarize:

•of our final six wins, four of them were layups, the other two were coin flips which we narrowly won.

•of our final 14 games, one was always a loss (Baylor), five were always a win (K State, ISU, TCU), and the other 8 games were coin flips against decent-good teams. we went 3-5 in those games.

•our best win and worst loss during gnat time are to teams within 18 places of each other on kenpom.

conclusion: we are a middle-of-the-pack Big XII team that neither punches too high above nor too low it's below own weight. any game against a clearly inferior team should be won; any game against a good team is a toss up; and don't hold your breath on beating any great teams. as far as Shaka's tenure goes, it's by far his best and most solid team (not counting his team with all Barnes players). as far as expectations for this season go, it's a fairly significant disappointment, even knowing that Shaka is such a handicap for our team. after we started 10-1 and found ourselves no.4 nationally, to find ourselves now no.26 in kenpom and an underdog in our first round B12 Tourney game can only be labeled a disappointment for me.

that's a wrap in the regular season. it's all win-or-go-home from here on out. and every game we play from here on out seems to me to be a toss-up at best. here we go.

The 3 games from Jan 26 -> Feb 6th when we were dealing with COVID and the Feb 20th WVU game just after the ice storm, maybe weren't the best opportunities for us to shine.

We toughed out a big win against Tech tonight, and regardless of the frustration this team exhibits for long stretches of games, we're going to be a very tough draw in the big dance. I hope Greg Brown finds a way to channel his angst and puts that energy into dominating on the court.

Attendance was listed at 2500 for the Kansas/OU game. The fans in attendance were certainly vocal, and will likely be the same tomorrow.

It sucks that KU gets to play in front of a home crowd every year in the conference tourney, but whatever. It doesn't suck as bad as their dumpster fire football team.

Attendance listed as 3510 for the Texas game. Apparently the limit is 20% capacity, so we can expect probably close to 3800 KU fans for the game tomorrow.
