1. Not solely schematic. There was a talent issue too.

Kris Boyd was super talented, but had poor discipline. Holton Hill was more undisciplined off the field than on it.
Deshon Elliott left after the 2017 season, and that was a pretty good defense that year.
Brandon Jones had great athleticism and run support, but bad ball skills.
Chris Brown was limited athletically, but solid in run support. BJ Foster got worse every year after his first, overall lack of discipline. DMo is a linebacker.

PJ Locke was solid and a likely victim of a bad scheme.
D'Shawn Jamison could also have been used better. I think Josh Thompson has all the talent in the world, but he was just always a step or two late.
Sterns was hurt often after his great freshman season, and tried to play through some injuries that made it tough for him to make the same plays we came to expect.

Most of the guys they recruited at DB were overrated. Jalen Green lacked the speed and technique to play corner. He finished as an average safety at Miss St. Chris Adimora finished his career as a linebacker at SMU. Kenyatta Watson, Tyler Owens, Xavian Alford, etc.

Man I forgot about Hilton Hill entirely. You’re kind of making my point for me though. There’s been no shortage of DBs coming in and leaving as NFL prospects, despite many of them coming in overrated as you mentioned. It’s really the one group Texas consistently kept putting people into the league even during down years. For the most part those secondaries didn’t have the benefit of playing dominant defensive fronts like this year’s group did (partial exception for 2020 with Ossai finally being used correctly).

Past couple years, outside of a couple new adds, it’s just a straight talent issue. That’s not necessarily on Sark as you don’t control what you inherit and it takes time to get young guys up to speed.
2. I think what people aren’t understanding is that our secondary really hasn’t been good since he left after the 2013 season. How many 4 & 5 star DBs have we had that never got developed right? Way too many

Deshon Elliott was a Thorpe award finalist; he, Brandon Jones, Kris Boyd, and Caden Sterns were all NFL draft picks. PJ Locke has stuck in the league.

The issues with those post 2017 Orlando defenses were schematic.

3. The only thing I could see anyone selling Mitchell on returning for a fourth year would be injury history and to prove to scouts he can stay healthy for a 2nd straight year. But that's also a big risk if he can't.
Dude won 2 NCs, played in the playoffs a third year, and was one of the best receivers in the country this year. He's not going to magically gain speed next year and already has the good size and great hands. I can't see him lasting longer than round 3 in the draft and is probably a 2nd round pick. Coming back makes zero sense.
I wish Sanders would make up his mind quickly so we can go get a TE for next year if he's leaving. By now he should have the NFL draft grade of 1st round, 2nd round, or back to school so go ahead and decide. He could possibly improve his grade by showing improved in line blocking in the SEC but I can't imagine as the 2nd best TE in the draft he would go past the 3rd round either. NFL coaches would believe they can improve his blocking in year 1 better than college coaches will.

If either of them come back it’s because they frankly really want to first and foremost, and that NIL resources were found to at least make it not a financially disastrous decision to stay. Neither really has anything left they really need to put on tape.

The knock on Sanders is blocking but it’s been adequate when he’s not asked to stay in and pass protect on defensive linemen. NFL teams aren’t drafting Sanders to stay in max protect, that’s just not going to have a huge impact on his draft stock. There’s really no reason for him to come back individually.

Mitchell may have slightly more to gain, not from anything done on his part but because the top end of this WR class is just stupid talented. His draft stock could benefit simply from not being compared to MHJ, Odunze, etc.

4. Bobby said he thinks the staff is willing to go into the spring with the WR room they currently have if they don’t love what is out there. Then look again during the May portal window.
edit: well interesting timing with that tweet

I think this is the correct stance. If there’s someone you really like, shoot your shot, but you recruited all these young guys for a reason; not to mention you already landed Golden. There are bigger needs on the roster.

5. Carter and Broughton are almost identical based on the PFF grades and Broughton played more snaps. I'm pretty sure that Caldwell is also in the tier above Carter and Broughton (need confirmation from Hiphopopotamos).
Assuming we land Caldwell, I don't think resource wise it made much sense to retain Carter.
Starters: Collins and Caldwell. Then back ups will be Broughton, Mitchell, and some other young guys. That's 3 really experienced guys getting most of the reps.

If we can trade out Carter for Caldwell, we're good. I remember seeing Carter get planted by double teams a few too many times this year.
If he wants to play more snaps, there's no way you can guarantee him that.

lol we’re all saying the same basic thing. It works out fine if you get Caldwell in. DL is a little thinner than you’d like if you don’t.
6. I think Carter is who he is. He wasn’t going to be a 30 snaps a game guy. He was a rotational piece.
Hiphopopotamos what did his PFF grades look like? His production market share that Dunlap does for defenders was ranked 23rd on the defense and in the sub-replacement level category.

Uh he was already playing 15-20 snaps a game and that likely goes up. I mean, the reason the interior DL has been so good over the past couple years is that they have been able to go five or six deep with competent players like that. He’d have been your second or third best returning DL depending on where you slot Broughton.

I think Texas can navigate it, especially if they can get Cadwell in, but you’d have liked to get him back. I trust that Bo Davis will have a couple of these younger guys up to speed by next fall though.

7. Really the only departing transfer so far that I could see having a material impact, feel like he was in line to get significant snaps next season. Still, with Bledsoe, Bryant, Mitchell, and even Swanson waiting in the wings, in Bo we trust. Retaining Collins is huge and getting Caldwell becomes even more important now.

8. I'm ok with BloU having to retool their entire defense over the off-season..and right before beginning SEC play. Took us 3 seasons to get things right and it's still a work in progress in some areas.

I mean it’s Venables’s system. I don’t think it’s that consequential of a move on the field. Bigger picture it gives them a chance to add another plus recruiter

9. Based on CTJ's comments, Nahlin, and a couple other 9.95ers it seems pretty obvious something is going to happen at WR that we aren't expecting.

Supposedly stems from a TFB report, but word is there’s a push to get AD Mitchell back. I think that would qualify.
Not a world beater…lol.
Guy pretty much shut our run game down by himself.  This guy doesn’t realize what an insufferable cunt he is.

He was second team All Big 12 for a reason. Meaning he was considered one of the most productive DL in the conference outside of Sweat and Murphy. You take that 10/10 times in the portal at a thin spot.

10. I don't know - seems exactly the place you'd want Joseph to end up.  His Louisiana recruiting isn't going to be as big a deal at LSU if only because they are going to get their share of Louisiana prospects regardless.

Also:
Is this where we start the Jimmy Lake speculation/rumors?

Just been enjoying poaching some of the better defenders out of the state in recent years. That gets harder in theory. Like I said, still agree it’d be a plus regardless.
11. I will douse BurntOrange&White and BillFromLakeTravis in gasoline and set them on fire to retain Bo Davis while getting rid of Terry Joseph.

Me: Joseph needs to go!

*Terry Joseph to LSU rumor*

Me: No not like that!

I’d prefer him not land at LSU just because of his LA recruiting ties. It’s on the very short list of places he could land that make me think twice about losing him. But still kind of agree in spite of that.
12. Grabbing a sitting P5 defensive playcaller who is a great recruiter for a non-playcaller role is the furthest thing from the comfort hire.

Nansen would be one of the best hires of the offseason if Texas gets him in a non-play caller role. He’s an elite recruiter and good enough play caller where he could be a DC at a lot of schools.

If he’s an elite recruiter that definitely makes more sense. Can never have enough of that.
13. I dont completely disagree with this. I thought Arch looked decisive in his limited time in the offense and had nice pocket presence. It wasnt enough to make any legitimate statements on his readiness. Lot of QBs can look cool in the pocket with a 40 pts lead. It certainly left me wanting to see more. I still think Quinn is far likelier to be the best option for Texas next year, but I can not say there is not small percentage possibility that Arch would be better.

Arch could definitely end up the better QB. It is unlikely he would be better next year; and if the staff thought he would be and wanted to go that route, Ewers would be declaring.

If this was two years ago then sure roll with Arch. Texas has a legitimate SEC championship/playoff run window open into next year and hopefully at least a couple years beyond that though. This goes back to everyone coping with a somewhat underwhelming 2022 by saying “this is the year before the year.” It turns out that was right. I know we’re not used to this as a fan base anymore but the fact is Texas has entered win now mode and decisions need to be made accordingly.

I also think people are overblowing the "Manning family plan" for Arch. The CFB world looks nothing like it did in the late 90's. All of his peers (other 5 star QB recruits) would be looking into transferring if it takes them 3 years to land a starting gig. With social media, its hard for him to avoid the narrative that he's being "wasted" on the bench. Do the experiences of his grandfather and uncle matter? Yes. Is Arch an independent being with free will. Also yes.
I'm not predicting that he transfer, nor am I advocating for him to start to avoid a transfer. Only pointing out that this place puts WAY too much on what happened with his uncles.

I agree that we definitely should not overblow any of that, but I think where it comes into play is where you alluded to his peers - his last name is the reason we’re having this conversation at all and the reason comparing him to his peers is simply not apples to apples.
14. Reminder of Uncle Eli’s career at Ole Miss

Peyton also was going to sit at Tennessee if not for an injury disaster. Archie Manning had 17 INTs in 10 games his first year as a starter. Both uncles took extra years in college.

I think people are really overblowing the “omg Arch is going to leave if he doesn’t play early” bit based on everything he and his family have said/done to this point. Arch and family know the long term value of development in college and want to make sure he’s set up optimally for long term NFL success.

The Mannings are also, uh, not poor. This is not a first generation D1 athlete trying to get to a pro contract ASAP. If he’s having fun in college and feels like he’s growing as a player working under Sark there’s no reason to rock the boat.

15. 100% agree with this. Can't imagine it's a money issue unless they liquidated a children's hospital for this contract. Can never really fault a guy for going back to his alma mater/first coaching stop but I think this would be a decent blow to our DL recruiting. BD's development has been nothing short of spectacular the past two years.

Bo Davis is among the best in the business and his replacement would almost certainly be a downgrade. That alone kind of sucks but he’s also been instrumental in rebuilding the culture of the program by all accounts. I’d be very disappointed to lose him but as you and others have been mentioned, it would be more of a pull to LSU than anything Texas did or didn’t do. Not much you can do about that. Hopefully it doesn’t come to pass.

I didn’t know the name Johnny Nansen until now. Kind of an odd resume bouncing between DL, LB, and RB coaching. Seems a little comfort hire-y at first glance to be honest but I’d love to be corrected on that. Just at the surface level Arizona’s defense appears to have improved quite a bit from 2022 to 23 though, so there’s that. Better than Mike Stoops at least.
16. Anyone who isn’t ecstatic at the thought of Quinn returning is a rube. As a freshman, he looked flawless in the RRS. As a sophomore, he lit up Alabama in Tuscaloosa, won a Big 12 title, and was a snap away from playing for a National Title…

As an upperclassman, he’ll easily be a top 5 player in CFB. With a mature O-line, a replenished arsenal at WR, and another year in Sark’s system — he has the potential to go full Penix/Burrow mode.

It’s just the hype - both that surrounding Ewers and people having extremely high expectations for him and of course that surrounding Manning.

Texas lost two games this year, both to sixth year QBs qualified to coach their offensive systems at this point. Consider that, consider the QB carousel this program has experienced in the not so recent past, and it’s incredibly dumb to be calling for Ewers to be pushed out. Experience at QB is extremely valuable. It would be one thing if Ewers was some no talent scrub but that is far from the case. If you want to compete for any kind of championship next season you want him back, period.

17. I’m not doing it well.  I can’t get my brain and the part that connects to the heart to get over how we handled the last 4 plays.
I’ve let go of pretty much everything else, don’t know if I’ll get over that or let that go.

It was us, it was all us we had it in our hand.  We got right to the finish line and started overthinking everything and went against what should have been very obvious.  This one I’ll never let go of.

This game, both in a macro matchup sense (defending the Washington passing game) and how it actually played out in terms of game script (multiple fourth quarter red zone opportunities) challenged Texas to be better than they have been all year and overcome what had consistently been weaknesses. They simply weren’t good enough. It stung but even in moment was predictable. This was a really good team that was a lot of fun to watch and brought home a conference championship that will be savored until Texas stops playing college football. They just weren’t a national championship caliber team and that’s okay.

18. South Austin summarized my thoughts exactly.

But I am puzzled by the whole "coming back/NFL" talk.  Putting aside recruiting rankings and stats juiced by playing for Sark, QE is a wildly inconsistent, better-than-average college QB.  He certainly does not look like an NFL QB.  On that, I'm Tom Hanks in Big with the robot toy.

Ewers would absolutely benefit from another year in college, especially in Sark’s offense. I don’t think anyone has seriously claimed otherwise. He’d get eaten alive on an NFL field right now.

Ewers however has been financially motivated his whole career (that’s not a value judgment) and the allure of an NFL contract, even a second or third round deal, is hard to pass up even if the extra year potentially vaults him into the first round. Also, it only takes one team to fall in love and the NFL has always loved a white boy that can spin it against air.

Further, there’s the angle that it’s not entirely up to Ewers in the sense that the staff would put a thumb on the scale if they felt like Ewers returning would cost them Arch Manning. That does not seem to be the case based on anything I’ve seen but it’s out there in the speculation.
