Serious candidate speculation? Just saw Dan Lanning on Twitter. I think Dabo missed his chance. DeBoer? Lane?

I don't know why half of the lists floating out there leave off Mike Norvell but I imagine he is a top candidate. Sark will get a call but I think he'd simply use it to get a fat bag out of Texas. DeBoer is really good but I wonder if Alabama will want a guy that's never worked at a blue blood in any capacity. Lanning and Lane hanging around too. Agree on Dabo, Alabama can't want a guy so entrenched in the past. Maybe Ryan Day wants a change of scenery.

NIL did him in.  and Texas has deeper pockets.  'Bama had the best players because Saban won.  Not because "they're 'Bama".  Back to the way it was boys.

@Wulaw Horn's Alabraska theory just got sped up, that's for sure.

I thought he’d make it another, or maybe two, seasons and then retire. As others have said the NIL has completely changed the landscape, and, he’s 72-years old. He’s won it all and I would bet his wife just wants to relax.

    He’s one of the best.

I'm only surprised he's retiring at this moment because they were bringing back their starting QB next year and looked to be very well positioned for another run. Having talked so much about how much he enjoyed this team I am surprised he walked away from another year with Milroe.

Flag football, 7-on-7. Eight Weeks, 128 teams: Everyone Plays.

Seed 'em up. Play in April and May. 64 Games in Week 1, 32 Winners play Week 2, then 16...

No NCAA, no Conference bs, no beauty contest voting (other than seeding first round, and that could be from the final NCAA D1 Standings).

For 128 teams, that's 127 games. Any given round could have multiple games in one venue if desired. Without eleven refs throwing flags, three more refs replaying videos, and three minutes of commercials for every minute of game, it's a definite possibility to get two or three games into the same time frame.

We're #3? Bring on #126, Buffalo. Yeah, I know D1A is up to, what, 133 teams? Bottom 5 are out. Who are the bottom 5? Oooh, it's W/L record and beauty contest time, and at least we won't be hearing FSU whining about being left out. Nothing says teams can't have "friendly" or even "conference" games outside The Tourney

This being Surly, there will be dozens, if not hundreds, of you lawyers and accountants to bring up dozens, if not hundreds, of reasons why it's not possible. Neophobe attitudes... belay that shit and let your imagination find ways to succeed.

    Oh, and remember: Fuck Offseason.

    Go on...

You don't need eight weeks for this. You could get it in over a four day weekend like two rounds of the NCAA tournament by playing double headers.

You guys rival sarvanaash with your constant offseason "here's how we lose a bunch of games no one is expecting" handwringing. It's become a sure sign of spring approaching on Surly when you two start picking out losses and assuming worst case scenarios.

If you'd like to take the under on 8.5 for Texas next year, consider this an open invite to bet me any dollar figure you'd like to pledge on the under, and I'll take the over.

Kentucky is now a threat? On the road, in Austin? Since the bestest Kentucky season ever in 2018, in which they went 10-3, let's look at their road performance:

2018-2023 (excluding corona 2020, in which they went 1-4 on the road) they are 12-11. Man, over .500 as a middling team in the SEC, on the road, is pretty impressive, right? 6 of those 12 wins are @ Louisville and @ Vanderbilt. Both programs during this same period, outside of Louisville in 2023, have been between some level of mediocre and putrid.

Kentucky has gone 7-6 two years in a row and both seasons include one FCS opponent. They are as plain as grits in recruiting and scheme, they're losing defensive talent to the draft, and they run an offense predicated on running success. You'd have to believe that another transferring QB behind a middling OL and a new back would be able to go on the road, gash the Texas run defense to great success, and then the Kentucky defense would be able to somehow run roughshod over an experienced and good Texas OL in order to get to its 1st round caliber QB and TBs. Okay. Cool.

    How about Florida?

Florida has gone 6-7/5-7/6-7 for the past three years. They haven't had a winning season since people believed cloth facemasks were a new fashion statement.

Since 2018 (excluding corona 2020 in which they went 3-1 on the road) they are 10-12 on the road. But wait! That includes 2018/2019 when Mullen had UF on good footing and they went 7-1 on the road. From 2021 forward, they're 3-11 and 2-7 under Sun Belt Billy. Their lone 2021 road win was against a Texas A&M team that couldn't tie its shoes. They actually lost at hapless Vandy that same season because they were fucking terrible also. Their 2023 road victory? An absurd gift of a comeback against another loser program - South Carolina. There isn't more than maybe a couple of players on that roster that understand anything about winning against good teams on the road.

Meanwhile, UF has been ravaged in the portal and there is the stench of death looming over the program. They play the toughest schedule in, maybe, history, in 2024. They come to Texas immediately after playing their emotional rivalry game against Georgia in Jacksonville. Barring a miracle, Napier is probably already fired when they visit Texas and they're playing out the string. This is a "trap" game in which anyone can reasonably expect these guys to get up on the road after being pummeled by a probable top 3 team at a neutral site?

    Get a grip.

Anything can happen on any given Saturday, but the L risk for Texas next season is 1) UGA in Austin 2) @ Michigan 3) Jihad in Dallas 4) Jihad in BCS 5) Jihad in Fayetteville and 6) idiotic grab bag of options for Sarkisian to simply fail as a coach. Texas ATM and Arkansas should legitimately suck next season, so anything past #3 is just worrying about being stuck in 2010-2022 land again. Go there if you must, spare the rest of us that journey.

Why Are You So Obsessed With Me Mean Girls GIF

My brother in Christ, if you are going to dedicate this lengthy of a callout at least read my posts.

Earlier I said Texas's absolute floor is 8-4 and that I expect them to be better. You can do the math on whether I'd take your 8.5 win under bet there. I've been pumping sunshine across this board since the Sugar Bowl and subsequent teeth gnashing because I've honest to God come around and think this team has a legit championship window open for the next few years. Real doomsday stuff!

I was responding to a post that mentioned Kentucky specifically as one of the biggest tossups on the schedule. I don't agree with that at all because you're right, neither they nor Florida are going to be particularly good, but they stand out to me as the most likely options for an out of nowhere loss. That doesn't mean I think it's likely. Someone out there is the world's tallest dwarf, that doesn't make them tall.

I'd be happy with 10-2, as long as Texas beats A&M. 10-2 should get them in playoff contention.

I really don't think Michigan beats Texas - not with their roster loses that early in the season.

Biggest toss ups are Georgia, OU in Dallas, and Kentucky late in the year. Honestly, 2024's schedule is not that bad. All of Texas' toughest conference games are at home (sans OU, but even that is a neutral site).

I definitely would not concede the Michigan game either but also I'm not going to sit here and chalk up a trip the the Big House as a W and move on. Depends on what both team's rosters look like after portal and draft dust settles, and what Harbaugh does, but right now it's more or less a tossup to me. Georgia is probably the only game I look at and think "Yeah, probably a L."

Kentucky and Florida both scream trap game with where they are on the schedule. I'm not particularly worried about either team in a vacuum but given where they fall a slip up would not surprise me. Glad both are at home.

11 wins is the ceiling for the regular season and that is generous.

Yeah I think that's reasonable. Undefeated against Texas's schedule is just not a realistic expectation. Split Michigan and Georgia, win every game you're favored in? Maybe not particularly likely, but I could see it.

Michigan DBs grab and push.   I wish ours would.   It would have to be coached though

I saw at least some really smart, subtle bumps on key plays from Michigan DBs last night that were indicative of great coaching. I can't remember exactly when it was but the one that stands out the most to me was on a third down Washington had going into the end zone. The Washington receiver crossed the Michigan saftey's face\; a Texas safety and most college safeties are done at that point. But the Michigan DB subtly bumped the receiver in the route. There was no grab, no shove, and the ball hadn't been thrown yet. Just knocked him off the line and disrupted timing a little bit. Right up to the line of what's allowed but not crossing it. The throw was slightly off and the reaction was that Penix missed. He didn't, the route just got disrupted by that much.

I was just thinking about how I literally cannot imagine a Texas DB making that play. Michigan definitely got away with more physical play in the secondary than is typically allowed but they also do things like that.

I'm afraid to set my expectations too high with us losing Sweat and Murphy and still having a big question mark in the secondary, but the floor is 12-2. Michigan is losing way more than us, we get Georgia at home, and 0u doesn't have Gabriel under center. Which three do we lose @ChiTownDoc?

I mean I've been sunshine pumping for next year but 12-2 is not the floor lol

#2 is a ranking that initially makes you recoil because of the losses Texas is taking with Sweat-Murphy-Ford on defense and with all of its pass catchers on offense. Then you look at what has already been done in the portal, retaining Alfred Collins, recruiting, etc. and see it is probably survivable. And then you look at what other top programs are losing and all of a sudden you're back around to Texas being right there.

But yeah - floor? Easy enough to see Texas lose at Michigan and lose to Georgia. We avoided a signature Sark head scratcher this year, not a guarantee that happens again. While Texas should be favored, OU is pretty much always a tossup and any of the four November games jump out as a plausible place for a wtf loss. To me I think the floor is 8-4. I think they'll be better than that but it's within the realm of possibility.

We played over our heads for most of the season and had a puncher's chance of getting to this game...where we would also have lost to a superior Michigan team. I'm completely fine with how our season played out. Winning the Big 12 was all I wanted. Most importantly, we finally righted the ship.

The frustrating thing is I am not convinced Texas loses to Michigan. Gun to my head I'd take UM but Texas would have had a much more plausible path to victory than Washington's - which was basically just another ridiculous outing from Penix and their receivers.

  9. Was rooting for Washington but the game went about how I expected except for Washington's miscues in the passing game. Several unforced errors there. Michigan probably still wins but more of a game down the stretch.

Kind of a frustrating game for a Texas fan. For one, as already discussed, Michigan employed the game plan Texas should have on offense and stuck with it. For two, Washington dropping off so much over just a week was also frustrating. I get Michigan's a better defense than Texas and the difference between a week vs a month of prep but man, if they had just made one or two of their several offensive errors last night in the Sugar Bowl we're sitting here hungover from Texas's national championship appearance. Oh well. Should have held on to the football.

Ambivalent on Michigan's title. Glad it isn't one of the usual suspects in contemporary CFB but there is an asterisk because of the sign stealing stuff. We will probably never really know how much impact that had. It will be fun to have a non conference game against the defending national champions.

Pulling a quality starter at DT out of the portal would be amazing.

Also, it must suck to be Cougar High and see Texas steal a win at their tackle box, have us waltz off to the SEC after their first year in the shiny new conference, and then take their two best returning players.  Talk about our feeder high school indeed.

Honestly establishing themselves as Texas's AAA team would elevate their program

  12. Now we’re really seeing way more go out than come in…this is on a playoff team. Not saying that most of these weren’t bread but I’m really wondering how we aren’t thin at some positions next year. We may have a stud at a position but behind him could be….
surprisingly wr is not one I’m that worried about. I think the net loss of worthy and his “effort” on plays will level out.

Wow this is just a brain dead take.

What position, specifically are you worried about being too thin at next year? I can think of one on defense which appears to be trending toward being a net upgrade through a portal add. Probably one on offense too, but it hasn’t had any portal losses.

Hilariously dumb take on Worthy that is barely even worth acknowledging. Dude was truck sticking guys all year at 175 pounds.

  13. Hell I got laughed at by a few folks here for saying that he wouldn't get drafted if he declares. Why would he declare? It just seems so damn silly. This kid is the highest rated QB recruit in the nation since Vince Young. First player to get a million dollar NIL deal. What does he have to show for it? Second team Big 12 QB and a conference title. My god, not even an award finalist for Maxwell or O'Brien. I don't wish the kid ill will at all. What this feels like is taking the hottest girl in school to prom, you get your photo taken with her at the door, and then she leaves. No dance, no midnight kiss, don't even get to grab an ass cheek. "Oh what could have been". That's what we'll be saying if he declares for the draft.

You got laughed at because it’s an extremely stupid take.

The last three years of third round selections at QB are the all star team known as Hendon Hooker (torn ACL and all), Malik Willis, Matt Corral, Kellen Mond, and Davis Mills. If you think there is any chance Ewers falls below that tier, let alone out of the draft entirely, just stop watching football.

Ewers should come back to refine his game and solidify his standing as a first round pick. He would get eaten alive on an NFL field right now. That does not, however, mean he would not be drafted.

  14. So….returning 3 year starter 5th year Center…that’s considered pretty good right?

Surly will continue to do its best to manifest a replacement. After three years this will be the offseason Flood benches Majors!

    giphy.gif

There’s enough talent coming back that dare I say it, they have a shot at it all next year.

Blows my mind that there is a nontrivial portion of the fanbase either wanting Ewers to leave or wanting Arch to jump him. I think some of us have forgotten what an open championship window looks like and how to handle it.
