  1. Ok, I can work with that. Explain 1A in your opinion. Because my understanding is that it's not absolute, and that creating a threatening environment is one of the areas not covered. Explain how advocating the destruction of Israel isn't creating a threatening environment? Especially Jewish students?
  2. But then they started setting up tents....that's just simply not allowed. What do you do when a protest turns into an occupation?
  3. Here's the video I watched...seems like a non-event. Make of it what you will.
  4. I don't think they were, but if so, there are legal remedies for that.
  5. The riot cops were there, in full gear, from the start. And answer the question. What should the administration have done?
  6. The embarrassment is the overreaction on this board to something that has happened dozens of times before without resulting in fascism. The definition of which, you seem to be misinterpreting about as much as MAGA does socialism.
  7. So what should have happened? Should UT have let the protestors erect a tent city encampment for as long as they like? I'm reading a lot of rage, but no alternate solutions.
  8. So are you proposing that the cops and the University didn't try to get the organizers to break it up / leave before using force? What positions?
  9. Yeah, cause that's what's happening. I'm talking about not being able to be against hormone treatments for children without being labeled transphobic or anti-gay.
  10. Wow, some of you need to dial back the rhetoric a smidge. To read this thread you'd think the cops came goose stepping through campus busting heads. They arrested a couple dozen people who were all released within hours. I think Hartzel was just worried it would become like Columbia University and didn't want that on campus. Abbott seizing on the opportunity for political reasons is a different situation entirely.
  11. You do once you start blocking access to buildings and walkways. Here’s what the law says about protesting on Texas college campuses | The Texas Tribune
  12. I recognize that I have eclectic views...and often they appear contradictory. But they aren't. I have one set of beliefs based on how I think the world SHOULD work, and one for the way the DO. The "should work" side is very liberal...bordering on anarchy, but I realize that's not really feasible in today's world, so I tend to default to a more practical approach. For example, I am pro-trans, but I also think the left pushes too hard to make it mainstream, which causes a natural backlash on the far right. At the same time I'm anti-MAGA, because they push too far right ideology too far, but I'm also against mass immigration. As for Israel, I think its founding is the root of much of the problems in the ME, and should never have happened. I feel like I've stayed firmly in the middle, but the edges (right and left) have moved further away from me.
  13. Just generally clearing out a crowd that didn't have authorization to be there and was asked to leave...presumably for the previous 1.5 hours. That's pretty standard practice. They weren't swinging clubs or anything as far as I saw. I hear the argument about 1A, but I don't feel like that was violated in this case. Perhaps that's where we diverge.
  14. Random thought...does anyone think the #metoo movement has a part in this? I know correlation and causation are different, but #metoo started in 2006 and blew up globally in 2017. I'm wondering because I know, that by today's definition, I could have been accused of rape several times back in the 80's and 90's. And before the pitchforks come out, who here never fucked a drunk girl in HS or college?
  15. Çatalhöyük in the house yo. You know one of Vic's ancestors tapped that ass.
  16. That's what dorm rooms are for...nobody needs to be fucking in a tent or the behind bushes in broad daylight...this ain't HS.
  17. On a side note, Eeyore's might have just gotten more interesting as I assume there will be protests there as well. Let's see if I can get myself arrested...I mean for something other than pot possession.
  18. I just watched (ok, skimmed through) a 2-hour video of the events. The cops were there for like 1.5 hours before they started to clear the area. I'm about as anti-Israel as it gets (note: not antisemitic), but these protests...as with most protests, are a waste of time...and often counterproductive. In my view, it wasn't an unreasonable response. That said, I'm not discounting the ideological angle for Abbott. I don't know enough about Hartzell to make that same statement about him.
  19. Thanks. Probably an overreaction, but it doesn't sound that bad. I mean it's not like it was Kent State Pt. 2 or anything.
  20. Well, that clears it up. Thanks for the thoughtful response. Not all of us follow the news 24/7...
  21. Forgive the newbie question, but I really don't want to wade through 17 pages. What are the Cliff's Notes as to why people here are upset?
