SIAP:
Bobby Burton
Texas reporters had two opportunities to speak with Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. The first came in a semi-private meeting and the second in the larger auditorium with all SEC media.
Some notes:
- Derek Williams is staying at safety. There's no move to star in the works. "He's a safety," Sark said.
- Sark declined to say if Guilbeau would stick at corner or move back to nickel full time. "The game's not tomorrow, so I don't have to make those decisions today."
- Sark said that linebacker was probably the position he was most pleasantly surprised with this spring. "The variety" of the group stood out. He felt like they might have been a little light at the position going in to spring but then you look up and Anthony Hill, Leona Lefau, Brad Spence, Ty'Anthony Smith, Trey Moore and Bo Barnes are out there and he feels pretty good.
- He said Liona Lefau "had a great spring".
- Mentioned that he has a somewhat inexperienced OL but that there are guys there who have come up through the ranks and paid their dues. Could have gone after a portal guy there but liked where the OL stood and their ongoing development. Felt he needed to focus on other spots.
- Sark spoke briefly on the QB situation. He said they took Matthew Caldwell as an insurance policy. "We've lost a QB for some time (to injury) every year I've been at Texas." Said he wants to make sure whoever takes snaps at QB, for whatever reason, is ready to go and up to the task.
- There is some talk right now about changing college football practice scheduling. It sounds like there is a movement to begin having practices in June either instead of, or in addition to, "spring football". This could coincide with the potential of a single portal window in April/May.
