  1. What are his traits that are elite? Hard to be the top WR in your class without size, twitch, elite cutting ability, something? I’m not down on him at all. I just don’t see him as a first round type.
  2. Bobby said it as official. Thammel reported it. Call that confirmed but maybe not?
  3. No. He means we have two guys leaving so we need 2 different starting tackles. They are already on our roster in all likelihood.
  4. I don’t think you can use history like that as a baseline, you aren’t looking for organic leave on their own guys after spring ball because they don’t like their future prospects- those are depth guys. You are talking about going out and forcing people into the portal with significant money offerings I’m sure. college scouting during the spring is at least as important as high school scouting in that respect. It’s also easier because more is known about those guys. That certainty should also raise the price those guys can get to get them to leave.
  5. The last part is interesting for sure. I’d rather go shopping this spring with 2M than pay 2M to retain Manny for sure. Maybe we only go shopping with 1M because that was the number we had penciled in, but I trust (more or less) our staff to get it right.
  6. WR # 1 and CB #1 and a mid tier DT and we probably are as good or better than anybody in CFB if we stay reasonably healthy.
  7. That was inevitable I think and I’ve been arguing it as the endpoint since the beginning of NiL. The rookie of the year is almost never in contention for MVP, so why would teams pay anyone with a 50% bust chance when they could get someone that’s already proven not to be a bust? It’s never going to be 100/0 bc you need baseline stability, it if given the chance to pay a high school blue chip 1M to get his freshman year (and the. Have to renegotiate)or go pay an all sec or all big 10 guy 1M to get his contract year it’s not even close to a decision to me. Freahman recruiting is still valuable (for now) to have the home field advantage in retention when it comes time to figure out market value later on in time, and because human beings are generally lazy and prefer inertia to change, but the more common transfers of successful players out from blue bloods become the less valuable either of those two advantages are. The good news (for high schoolers in the future anyway) is that the fewer of them that get paid now will lead to more getting paid later as that will become a money ball competitive advantage. Texas, to me anyway, should play this as an early majority with our advantages etc. Boise state types should be the innovators and big 12/ACC/middle tier sec and big 10 schools should be early adopters. Anyone with prestige, money and history should be monitoring the back and forth such that they are in the early majority with a foot in both camps for money to be the largest possible advantage. if I had to speculate I’d bet 3-5 years from now the ideal mix in the starting 22 would be something like 12-15 transfers for Texas, but some of those transfers coming aggressively after year 1 at a lower level school that you recruit in to then develop/retain. this year we started 3 transfers on offense and 2 on defense. That seems light to me especially in light of the fact that all 5 transfers will be on the nfl. I could be wrong and that number could ultimately be too high at 13 and maybe settled at 8-11 or something, but it’s going to be higher than 5 in the future I’d almost guarantee.
  8. Same argument with Wingo. But if it’s higher than those two that starts to get non-replaceable…
  9. No, checking out mentally during the playoffs is what would make him mentally weak. Go win it all and go get paid- sure- whatever. Decide you are gone and then short time it during the playoffs? Fuck off with that shit- finish your commitment (financial) to your employers and your implicit commitment to your teammates.
  10. Except for the fact that a lot of what those people are doing is based upon reading of fed tea leaves, so… it’s pretty interconnected. I’m not smart enough to tease out which is which.
  11. I mean- yeah I get that. Probably worth it for the deterrent value alone going forward.
  12. Yeah- some people are reporting 2. That would mean Wingo or Hill not Wingo and Hill, but maybe it’s all 3 (assuming manny is 1 for sure which seems fair). Which- cool- whatever. I think he’s better than he played the last 2 games but if he’s checked out during the playoffs fuck him/ go be mentally weak somewhere else.
  13. Fuck it. Go get Williams from Bama. They are poor. And it would be fun. If it’s Wingo as I assume is one. If it’s Hill and Manny and not Wingo go get Williams anyway. except that stupid sec to sec spring transfer rule. Is that still a thing?
  14. You are assuming the elites running the fed are actually elite. I’m not willing to grant that assumption at this time.
  15. Well, when I’m hoping the two guys are “only” Manny and Wingo I’m not in a happy place.
  16. Bond officially going pro. Like that the same way I like Blue going pro. Rather they get drafted as Longhorns for recruiting/portal thread than go somewhere else and have a big season and make it look bad for us. That guy really torched his status on the way out the door. The anti-Golden. Decisions left (and my guess) Williams (gone- too much money to pass up) Campbell (back- I kept saying look for him to go, and that was the direction he was leaning apparently, but I think the tape is likely catching up with him at a non-elite position of guard instead of tackle) Taaffe (back- hometown hero- this is his passion- can still get better if he adds 10 pounds between here and coming out) Moore (gone- but maybe that's just pessimism- Gerry/Bobby are saying back as is IT- but they'd all had him gone I think for the last month)
  17. Sure. The problem is it’s off 90% of the time in one direction lately. It should be 50/50.
  18. I wonder how much of the "shitty draft class at WR" has to do with shitty QB play after the Covid time went out, and how much of shitty QB play we have seen might be lack of normal top end WR talent. I don't love hearing that Texas coaches love the WR room as is- I think my #1 portal ask right now would be legit WR #1 (even over DT) as I like the two guys we got- I like what I saw from January, I like what I'm hearing about Terry and if the Edges and LB's are as good as I think they are going to be the front 7 will be nasty. I know we will end up with another body or two at DT, but I don't think they need to be game breakers. We don't have any game breakers at WR to my way of thinking. Sure, development does happen and maybe the freshmen are really good- but none of them seem to project to be a Smith or Williams or even Wingo for that matter. So, I bet on worse at running this WR room back without our top two producers from this year and adding in 4 frosh. I guess the upside here is that's a pretty Darwinian room for Sark as he likes to keep it to only really playing 3 or 4 guys, so, whatever. If Blue wants to transfer I won't rend any garments or wear ash and sack cloth or anything, but I hope he just goes to the NFL so I don't have to devote anymore headspace to thinking about him after the rollercoaster he's been on the last 4 years going back to high school headcase. I would say on balance we got the win out of his production here the last 3 years, but I don't know the opportunity cost and think we probably are cutting ties at the right time.
  19. Longhorn decisions on draft entry and protal entry both due on Wednesday. Confirmed Draft as of 1/13: Quinn, Banks, Blue, Golden, Bond, Gone but not official: Williams, Savea (transfer) Leaning to coming back: Taaffe, Moore Checking on his draft stock still (before coming back if he listens at all): DJ Campbell. Exhausted Eligibility: Helm, Davis, Majors, Broughton, Collins, Lole, Norton, Gbenda, Blackwell, Makuba, Barron, Sorrell, Holmes, Bolden, Connor
  20. Golden at 23 for all players? That's absolutely wild. I'd be thrilled for him if he made it into the second round- pretty happy for him to be a 3rd round guy. I didn't have Blue in my last draft post speculation so, yeah agreed. He better get some serious track coaching skills and figure out how to kill that 40, which is dumb, but still apparently a thing. I'm glad he declared as opposed to the transfer portal from a selfish perspective as I'd rather see someone else take his spot at RB and/or whatever NIL resources he would command, but I also didn't want to see him go get 1800 all purpose yards somewhere else and never put a ball on the carpet. He either adds another longhorn to the draft or doesn't make us look bad by succeeding elsewhere. Win/win.
  21. You know NFL teams like natural traits that are elite- low 4.3's are elite for RB's, probably gets someone to take him at the ass end of the draft. I agree with you in principle that he's well down the list of draftable running backs this year, for sure, and lean toward he doesn't get drafted unless he burns up the track. 14 TD's in big time ball including 5 in the last 4 games isn't nothing. He's a gadget player that hasn't helped himself on special teams like K Robinson did, but if he's fast enough he's certainly has a chance to get drafted. Him, Holmes, Connor, Gbenda all slot the same way to me- unlikely to get picked but I wouldn't be as shocked as if I woke up with my head sewed to the carpet. Of the 4 of them he's the most likely to get taken if he puts up good numbers at the underwear Olympics.
  22. My bet is if he runs under a 4.35 he gets drafted in line the 6th or 7th round. If he doesn’t he’s udfa.
  23. Agreed. One bad game (Clemson) and one shitty play against ASU. We had the Thorpe award winner opposite him and our Thorpe guy was targeted more than him.
  24. Welp, nobody gets the prize of 2 free tickets to national title game. Every vote seemed to be to donate it to Burnt Endz. $1,000 to @immamacto give to the TE room. tell me how you want it sir.
