  1. Gretsch created the Filtertron around the same time that Gibson created their original humbucker. My '58 Gretsch Anniversary has a single pickup, but its a Filtertron stamped PAF which is cool. TV Jones started making a recreation of the Filtertron sometime in the late 90s or early 2000's, after Gretsch was long gone. When they revived the Gretsch brand in the early 2000's, most people preferred TV Jones version to Gretsch's own. In fact, most of the top of the line Gretsches still come with the TV Jones version installed - including all 3 of mine, though then Billy-Bo has the higher output Powertron version. I posted audio clips from the TV Jones site up thread a day or two ago. They keep the bite and twanginess of a single coil, but still have the warmth of a humbucker. He offers several versions of it now, with multiple mounting configurations. The TV Classic is where its at, thats the original great Gretsch sound. Everything I do and try, I always end up back at them. I put a set in my V and think I created a perfect guitar. Plays like a Gibson, sounds like a Gretsch. Edit - I also said this upthread, but they are a very popular choice for Telecasters because the provide plenty of twang. BTW, I met Tom V Jones, the man who makes them, at NAMM one year. Very nice guy.
  2. Pair of green Telecaster's from Fender Custom Shop. They have the TV Jones pickups i love. I joined a Telecaster group on FB. That may have been a mistake.
  3. They're too busy doing coke in the bathroom. Edit - actually now that I think about it, most of the coke heads haven't been at the bar recently 'cause the bar requires proof of vaccination. For whatever reason, the guys who are snorting whatever is in that bag without question are the same guys who are afraid to get a shot because they have no idea what's in it. Just an observation.
  4. Things ain't what the used to be.
  5. I put TV Jones Classics - Filtertrons in everything and they are a very common choice for Telecasters. They have the warmth of a Gibson humbucker, but manage to retain the bright twang of a Fender single coil. I built that pink one for about $900, every part came from Warmoth but the pickups. I did put low budget pickups in it though, so say a grand. Im gonna swap the pickups with the 51 Nocaster set in the scratch built one I keep in Texas. Of course it'll be more if you do a fancy body finish or a thin line. A figured wood neck will drive it up a bit too.
  6. I have two of those I bought quite a while back. I bought a kit off some guy on the Telecaster forumns and hand wired one.
  7. Thank you for the permission, DougO. Notice that I was very careful with the words I used there! [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787] Damn this thread's been going on forever with it's incarnations.
  8. Thats the problem with Warmoth. Paralysis from l the choices. I was in that state with a sparkly Tele inwas dreaming of, then one day I saw that shell pink comfort body and had an instant vision for it. I ordered everything but the pickups from Warmoth within 15 minutes. A girl recently told me put of the blue that it was the prettiest guitar she'd ever seen and was floored when I told her I assembled it from parts myself.
  9. If you do a wider spacing i think you'll want the compound radius fingerboard that Warmoth offers. I'd get their recommendation on that. Im fairly certain you'll have trouble setting it up properly if the fingerboard isn't matched to the spacing. Looking forward to the project.
  10. I that situation the majority wouldn't want the other person either.
  11. Very true for me. For better or worse. Sometimes I wanna quit cause I can't get the sound I'm looking for, other times I love my sound. Last week after the bar closed we were hanging out and dude I will eventually be in a band with was there. I think he's a great front man in one band and a great lead guitar player in another he's in. He always tells me how great my sound is, always telling me I have it in my fingers. So I bring him upstairs to show off the bedroom rig ive been jamming on. I can't get enough of it. Just sounds like Rock and Roll in every way I love it. I handed him the V and cranked the Marshall louder than I probably should at 2:30am. He sounded like hell. Sharp, shrill, piercing. He kept turning knobs, "how do you tweak in that sound?" I dont know if he needs a drummer or if it was the booze, but it was erratic and he had no time. You would think he juat started and somebody showed him a pentatonic scale. There was nothing musical about what was coming out. So we turned it off and went downstairs and hung out some more. Me thinking maybe something was wrong w my amp. I didn't pick up the guitar at all while up there. Next morning I crank it up and get a big smile from crunch I was pulling out of an A chord. Just how I want it to sound. Little bit of a Ray Charles experience. Still want to be in a band with the guy, technically I already am.
  12. I'm not too familiar with JM's music, but he pops up everywhere guitar related and know he has a reputation as an asshole. The whole PRS Strat thing reinforced it. It takes a lot of balls to recreate an iconic guitar and then put your own name behind it. That said, I saw a youtube video recently where he was giving a guitar lesson on one of his songs. He was emphasizing the key to it was the right hand technique, was actually a pretty good teacher. I came away thinking that was pretty cool. Taking a little time to teach your imitators. He didn't seem like an asshole in the video, he seemed sincere.
  13. Recieved my ballot yesterday, voted no and dropped it in the mailbox immediately. Gavin's an asshole and a sleazebag, but he won the election and hasn't done anything to warrant a recall imo. It's to easy to get anything on a ballot in this state, including a recall.
  14. They only did them with that trapeze tailpiece for a few years, late 60s early 70s if I recall. I almost bought one just like your's in a pawn shop several years ago. Same color but not as great of shape. It had a very playable and somewhat smallish neck. I went back and forth on that one for a few days, walked in to buy a few days later and it was gone! I'd stop by that shop everytime I was near it seeing if anything else would turn up and it finally did. I scored a Gibson Explorer in great shape with case a few years later for $700. That was fairly recent, 2017 maybe. Place is gone now.
  15. Thank you for this perspective CM. After stewing on it, the story is even better. I've been trying to complete what will be my/our 1st record for well over a year now. We finally had everything done last spring, but a short section of the bass was really sloppy on one track. None of it's perfect, but this section really stood out. I tried having her do the overdub here in June and she killed it, but I fucked up recording because I'm an idiot and don't know what I'm doing. She's a teacher and spent the summer break galavanting all over, so it was last night before I could get her here to do it again - 2 days before I go do some galavanting of my own. I was getting the throne for her to sit on when I dropped it. We hi-fived at the end because she nailed it and its the final thing that needed to be recorded. Now we just need it edited in by the guy doing the mixing, then we can get all of it mastered and copyrighted. After that I'll see if I can get a label to put it out or do it myself if not. All that to say, that gouge at least has a moment it's worthy of. Thank you for the perspective. Come to think of it, she never sat on the throne anyway. She recorded standing up. Oh well!
  16. Went there the last time I was in town. The Birria tacos and the Wako Taco were exceptional, the sauce that came with the birria should be offered with everything. Really good. The other tacos I tried were good enough, but those two stood out. They let me order a single birrria too, they are only listed as a plate of 3 on the menu.
  17. Was coming to post this. Wonder how this is gonna work for my bartender friend and the guy running the pizza shop that i mentioned up thread. No way to be fully vaccinated in 8 days.
  18. @foggynotion to the white courtesy phone. If anybody can find it, its that guy. If there's any cocaine in the chainsaw case, please don't do it in the bathroom below my stairs.
  19. I'm just grateful that it was the back of the guitar facing the room. It's a guitar I plan to take to my deathbed, so its really just gonna serve as a reminder that I'm an idiot. I told my friend who was here, "I just took a guitar worth about $5k and made it worth about $4k". Better news, my last bass player and I committed to weekly sessions last night. Ive been frustrated cause I've been writing a ton lately and I've nobody to collaborate with, so it all goes nowhere. I have another project/outlet, but I can never get a commitment to something regular with them and half of what I come up with doesn't fit it anyway. I have 3 drummers interested and hope to find another guitar player who we gel with. Hopefully we'll have a new Rock and Roll band by the holidays.
  20. I dropped a drum throne last night. It bounced about 5 ft across the room and left a big gouge in the back of my Les Paul R8. I bet Murphy Labs never though to try that technique!
  21. I'm sorry to hear YC. Your experience seems like mine, also J&J. It took about 2 weeks to get a negative result. Enjoy Netflix, get some rest, and thank yourself for being vaccinated. I can't imagine getting hit with this thing full force.
  22. This is my question. They recently had an ownership change and have been trying to bring back confidence in the brand because they were bleeding so bad. I bought a Hummingbird new from a local dealer a few years back. It had a tiny rattle under the bridge. Not enough that anybody would notice, I'd only hear it if I was playing in a quiet place. Certainly didn't hear it in in the loud-ish music store when I bought it. Still, unacceptable on a guitar I payed over $3k for. Long story, but the dealer sent back to Gibson and they got it back to me with the issue resolved. I was initially disappointed that there was no explanation of what they did, but soon realized its probably better to not have documentation that there ever was an issue for resale considerations. They handled it well, imo. Hope they do right for your brother.
  23. Missed this. It doesn't say if Gibson plans to make it right with the ones out there. I'd be pissed. They're gonna add more prominent labeling in the future. [emoji849]
  24. All I have under my stairs is a bar toilet where people do cocaine. I'd rather have the guitar case storage.
  25. Speaking if Reverb... After a few drinks last night I nearly made an offer on this "reverse burst" R9. Its from 2014, same year as my R8, so I'm certain it has those pickups that sound like Thor's hammer. Still tempted.
