  1. The subject of this thread is both description and remedy, it seems.
  2. He merely said the quiet part out loud. The GOP hate engine was built long before Trump. He seized the reins, that's all. I suspect some GOPs think the quaint notions of responsible government spending, individual/state's rights, and limited government power were only just recently swept away. Those things have been illusory certainly since Ronald Reagan and likely starting with Richard Nixon. Money and power are the establishment.
  3. I can only imagine how lost I'd be on the new version. When they updated the first Trivial Pursuit last century, I went from a killer player to a dumbass. Demoralizing.
  4. Now do it for Treasury, FBI agents, USAID, and DEI. He seems to be focusing on his own supporters for deportation, so let's backburner outrage on that front. Tough luck for the queens and the coons and the reds and the Jews Muslims. Fucking amazing.
  5. Read the fucking room, dumbass.
  6. A lot of snappy one-liners.
  7. This seems to be grist for the last few pages about an American GЯP President pronouncing the site of a massive slaughter the future home of a USA owned Mediterannean paradise development once we get those pesky, bombed-out natives out of the way. Totally rational response and focus of analysis.
  8. My use of the saying was prior to MAGA. I was mortified with how they rolled over for W's Iraq invasion and, even further back, couldn't find the spine to reject Clarence Thomas because of fear of losing the Black vote. That was an insult to Black voters. Since the shocking election of Trump, they've fought as well as they can. They impeached twice. The Jan 6 investigation was a masterpiece. I'm in your camp now. I don't see them as ineffective. I see them as swamped by a fascist takeover that nothing has prepared any of us for. It appears that legislation is closed off because of the taint-licking GOPs. Legal action is thwarted by the MAGA control of the Executive. Only a vast popular uprising will work here. The Dems can harness that, but they can't create it.
  9. My mantra as well except I used weak instead of pussies. Decorum. That said, choosing between evil and anything seems to be pretty easy.
  10. Do something! Impeach him! Oh, wait...
  11. After the pussy hat march of 2017, I thought women were our best hope. Misogyny was almost the official theme of Trump's life. The sick fucks of the right, found ways to rope them in with fear talking about the dangerous homo teachers grooming children for sex. Add the terror of transexuals entering the bathrooms at public schools, and you get the panic you look for. You can drape that in the xenophopia of the raping cat-eaters flooding our country. The thing I didn't recognize as so dangerous was the Christian Nationailists. Kingdom issues. Baby murder. Sex change abductions. Another that I did not anticipate was the ease with which Musk, a non governmental agent, could seize control of the purse strings. I didn't anticipate the specifics of the absurd reasoning that the Treasury office just, gasp, pays out as ordered without exercising veto power which they don't have. Everybody would know this, but we haven't bothered to teach and learn a lot about the republic, it seems. Nothing blocks the way. Nothing.
  12. I love the drift from subjective to objective in Surly discussions. It's stupid to think that there is a definitive top five of any genre. I enjoy reading everyone's choices. I'm reminded of movies that I've forgotten or never seen. The Untouchables was crap to me. Donnie Brasco is, to me, over-rated. I'm glad to be reminded of Carlito's Way which is really great. Dillinger is inarguable to me as among the top five. I'm not getting into a knife fight over any of it.
  13. Saw Conclave. Fabulous cast and solid scenes. Dull movie for me. I never gave much of a shit about who becomes Pope, the violence outside of the conclave didn't really connect to anything for me, and the mystery of Cardinal Benitez probably should have been explored earlier to give it more dramatic impact. I hope the other other obscure Oscar nominees are better.
  14. I write. That is fantastic. Any writer can benefit from that tape. Thanks.
  15. You're exactly right. You should be ashamed.
  16. Maybe these are just bank robber movies, but they should never be overlooked: Bonnie and Clyde Dillinger (Warren Oates) (such a cast) The Outfit (Robert Duval) Charlie Varrick Scarface They're elite.
  17. They took enormous risk when they moved against the king of England. Jeffereson knew the cycle of governance lined out by the Greeks. There's never stasis although we (me for sure) assumed we'd hit the sweet spot and evolved to the ultimate goal. I've never been a communist or even a socialist. Now, at last, I get it. But who could have predicted such tame complacence? I'm sure that I grow tiresome. I'll step back. My points have been amply made. Back to detachment, my friends. At least for awhile.
  18. According to Trump, it was huge and great. According to local experts, it was bad.
  19. Hey! I've seized the top of this page like Elon seizing the Treasury! Donald, I'm ready! Appoint me!
  20. Man, Surly has steered me to some good shows. I'll take the guys above running shit rather than Elon's coterie.
