So Aggy is confident on Malik Hornsby, and IT says he has an entourage? That's.... discouraging.

One of the first rules in selling 9.95’s is to subtly throw shade on a recruit who looks to be headed elsewhere. Insinuate grades, a greedy uncle but whatever you do keep your readers excited about reading your next scoop. Discouraging news is bad for clicks.

BTW, regarding my loathing of Holland, I’ve been clear with it here and on Shaggy. I called him out for being lazy with his takes and he hid behind a moderator tag and whined after we got into it on the thread and I handed him his head. He locked the thread and then started another one calling me names for being a meanie and not valuing his “work”, which more or less means I didn’t kiss his ass for shoddy work. He’s one of these chasers in life who mistakes doing a lot of shit for “hard work” which he conflates with actually being successful and adding value to the world.

I’d happily go up with him here, in real life or wherever he doesn’t get to hide behind a fucking mod handle. That said, it is nice to know that I am currently taking up space in his head rent free.

The dude he went to dinner with or whatever was apparently SLX, btw. For those who know us, we’re, umm, not quite in the same realm of behaviors or lifestyles.

Lulz at being mistaken for SLX.

And given EJ’s love of frappachinos and cars, hanging out with SLX seems so fitting.

All of them. Any football game is better than a wedding.

Watching paint dry is better than attending a wedding.

Uh, what? Some of the best times in my life were at  wedding receptions.

I wish I attended more weddings and watched fewer games where Strong and Shawn Watson shit the bed to be honest.

    That's hilarious.

Gigem247 publishes an article on July 5 about how Marchiol is going to tear it up, even concluding "Marchiol and Hines should give A&M fans hope that the Aggies’ linebacker situation is in good hands for the next three to four years even after Otaro Alaka and Dodson use up their eligibility."

A week later we learn the kid has transferred and is already enrolled at another source.

Yikes. What is the spin now from their site? He was not SEC good?

I think that was the point of the article Newy, he was doing a review/post-mortem.

This is the 9.95 world, they write premium articles on public information.

I understand the point of the article. I am being critical of how often he suggested guys were “obvious bad takes”when ahead of time he made not mention if this. I specifically remember 24/7 driving the hype train on the 2016 class. Specifically the defensive line.

Now they were all bad takes and he knew it? Forgive me for rolling my eyes while reading that article.

Calling someone top 100 in the state is hardly a strong endorsement

Right. But he routinely ranked these guys 4 star prospects despite being “obvious bad mental evaluations”. That’s all fine and dandy but if he did not say as much ahead of time he does not get to claim after the fact he knew it.

I can write a column going back and claiming every bust was so obvious to me before it happened.

Some retrospectives on the 2015 and 2016 recruiting classes from Nahlin. 2015:

      Hide contents

Ryan Newsome (still deciding if he's a Bruin): Talked to his dad at MJ's draft get together. Great guy, great family. They know they were in a tough spot and didn't truly feel wanted at UCLA or Texas. Strong decided there was room and it didn't work out. I don't really count it as a miss because the way it came together Newsome didn't keep them from taking a better player.

PJ Locke (senior starter): Disappointed last year at nickel but should have a good senior year. If not, then he won't start the whole season. Locke was a fine pick-up late after Tim Irvin bailed for Auburn. Interestingly, Irvin knew he screwed up and begged Texas to let him transfer. Strong said no thanks.

Chris Warren (left early for the NFL???): This was a huge evaluation miss by the staff, and kind of by me, but mainly because I trusted the staff. They viewed him as a "mortgage payer" meaning land guys like him and you can feel confident in your job security. Yeah. I was very vocal about the staff missing on Ronald "Roland" Jones and screwing that recruitment up. Saw him on draft night too. He would have been a Horn.

Kai Locksley (transfer): Texas put itself in a rock and hard place. It didn't have any quarterbacks so it took two quarterbacks that still left them with no quarterbacks. Locksley was a pain in the ass and so was his father.

Kris Boyd (senior starter): I wrote in real time that Kris wasn't the f*** up it seemed like he was an that football important to him. He's always been an NFL player in his mind and sometimes gets a little big for his britches. But he's a tough SOB and fantastic athlete with 1st RD potential.

Holton Hill (left early for the NFL): He and Boyd played out almost how I thought. I said Hill would be better early because he was much more refined and had about 10,000 practice reps but that Boyd's ceiling was higher. Hill lost his way once he got to campus which was unforeseen. He's a good dude but didn't prioritize football like he should have. He might make it big yet. He's a 1st RD talent.

Gilbert Johnson (never made it to ATX): A throw-in for the Florida 5 turned 1.
Anthony Wheeler (senior starter): Strong made up ground and overtook OU late and it looked like a huge win. Wheeler's COD was a question but other than that he had the look of a high upside Mike. I figured he would take to great coaching which made me wrong twice. His story is not yet fully written and he flashed some of his best ball in the spring game.

Devonaire Clarington (never made it to ATX): Never heard of him.

DaVante Davis (senior starter): Quietest guy on the team. I figured he'd be a safety because Hill and Boyd would lockdown CB but that didn't go according to plan. Also, he gets lost in coverage at times which make safety a non-starter because there's more to process. Methinks he'll have a solid year but if not Anthony Cook looms.

Malik Jefferson (left early for the NFL): He'll tell you he didn't have the career he thought he would but he doesn't regret choosing Texas over every other school in the nation one bit. Conditions in Cincy are favorable for him to start. I'm not sure that's ideal but he needs to find a way to make it work and hit the second contract payday.

Cecil Cherry (Horn for a day): LOL. This recruitment ran me ragged. Fans fell in love with his swagger and physicality, I fretted over his stiffness. He was a lamb who thought he was a lion. Bad mental eval.

Brandon Hodges (JC Transfer): Bad mental eval but the staff desperately needed OL help.

Quincy Vasser (JC Transfer): Solid program guy upon arrival who played on both sides of the ball.

Tristan Nickelson (JC Transfer): Great mental eval, poor physical eval. As with Hodges, Texas had to reach. Joe Wickline thought he could turn anybody into a player and didn't recruit with much effort.

Breckyn Hager (senior starter): The first time he walked by me he was spindly as hell but I couldn't forget his shoulder width. I knew he would add significant weight. I also figured him for an edge player. He got the crazies from his dad but not the instincts. If you wanted him to take a grey shirt to make room for someone else, drop and give the board 20.

Connor Williams (left early for the NFL): I liked him more than the networks but I didn't like him as much as I should have. Doh. I learned a lot from this one. If a guy is offered as a center, tight end, and tackle, he's freaking baller.

Du'Vanta Lampkin (no hablé español - OU): Malo mental eval.

Garrett Thomas (quit football): I liked him when I saw his sophomore tape. I still recall his first offer was Michigan for some reason. I was happy they landed him. I'm not sure why it didn't work out.

Kirk Johnson (on team - healthy???): He looked like Marshall Faulk coming out of the back field at the first Under the Lights camp. I remember talking with Tommie Robinson about it and both of us shaking our heads. Injuries have robbed him. Asking about his health is pointless.

Tristian Houston (redshirt junior): My guy at Houston at the time couldn't believe Texas took him, citing, "we wouldn't take him here." Harsh, but an odd eval especially after ignoring Ronald Jones. I will say his senior year was better than his junior year.

DeShon Elliott (left early for Charlie's couch) Re: the couch, Deshon and Strong's daughter broke up last year and she transferred to Florida I believe. Then Elliott went on a tear with....wait, what? Oh yeah, Elliott was always a safety with good size and physicality. I had one HS coach who played in the League that Elliott would be an early round pick. Almost, and he might have snuck into the the 3rd round with one more year.

Charles Omenihu (senior starter): He first popped up on the scene and was ranked like 115th in the state. Omenihu had some traits you couldn't teach but was definitely a long-curve guy. I got to know him well and knew he'd maximize. I wrote his best football would be played in the NFL and I believe that now more than ever.

Ronnie Major (medically retired): Wickline loved him and thought he had a future 1st rounder on his hands. I don't think Major loved football like he does videography.

Patrick Vahe ( senior starter): Loved him in high school and wrote that if he was 6-5 he'd be a five-star OT. He hasn't had the career I expected but it's hard to not have sympathy for him given all the changes he's gone through.

DeAndre McNeal (finessin' elsewhere): MY DAWG! I asked him who does better with women, he or Lane. He laughed. He likes it in Boca Raton. He was a bit of a tough eval. I felt like his upside was at LB but anyone whose nickname is finessin isn't meant for that side of the ball. I bet he has a solid season.

John Burt (senior): I wasn't super high on his junior year but then his senior tape was awesome and he ran great track times. The only thing holding him back is hands. He's a great dude and program guy.

Cameron Townsend (redshirt junior): The best commitment party I've been to and his pops was one of the best dad's to go have a beer with. Cam is a bit of a tweener who just isn't explosive enough to fit into a hybrid type position.

Matthew Merrick (transfer): Gray shirt who became a red shirt. Texas missed on Kyler Murray and had room. He was a questionable take but did have some ability.

FYI Nahlin ranked Houston as a four star prospect and top 100 player in the state. He can claim now he knew he was a bust but he never ranked him as such.

Not saying Pac-Man is the main one at fault, but he should have shown better judgement. He had a chance to walk away but kept talking. When the guy came after him, he could have been defensive, but went on the offensive. When the guy went down, Pac-Man hit him  And we don't know what happened before the video started.

I'm not saying don't defend yourself, but you have to remember the big picture.

He's a 35 year old free agent looking for a job with an NFL team.

It's amazing he manages to get himself into fights everywhere he goes. Even the damn airport.

The whole world must be out to get him.

Just a few weeks ago they were saying how Calzada was a backup plan to two or three other guys. Now he's hand picked by Jimbo and the guy they wanted all along. The other 98 is incredibly entertaining, thanks :30!

You just wait and see! When his senior film comes out USC, Alabama and the Dallas Cowboys will be trying to steal him away!

Well, I don't know about you guys, but boy has it been an awesome past week on this thread and board. We've picked up commits, explored the wonderment of Oscar Giles and his fanbase, I've been given tips on how to win friends and influence people, SydneyCarton has been reminded of his lapdog status which is gratifying but has him quietly sulking, and fuck, you name it.

Anyway, I'm off to Europe to cavort with the landed gentry and HenryJames. My curse to the rest of you recruitnik hillbillies is that I hope not a fucking thing happens while I am gone on the commitment front and this thread continues to twist itself into utter futility until the dead period ends. I return for the UTL event, which should be balls to the wall, and then we enter the season. Should stuff happen in the interim, I'll just consider it a reverse jinx on my part and take credit for it.

Also, when stuff does go down with the existing players on the team and attrition is announced, it's all good with clearing dead weight on the roster for new guys or deserving walk-ons. We need the numbers for this next class either way.

You better not be in Geneva this month. Switzerland will literally fall into a sink hole under the weight of our combined egos.

The most important things that need to occur while you’re gone are the following:

    1. We need to increase our recruiting presence at Westlake and Lake Travis.  This means finding a way to counteract Stanford, since its academics appeal to those families.

    2. Mehringer should be given exclusive authority over Houston and DFW recruiting based on his track record of landing nationally elite WR prospects.  We need to let the cream of the coaching staff rise to the top.

    3. Oscar Giles, since he does more with 3 Stars than most coaches do with 5 Stars, should be elevated to Co-DC and groomed to be Orlando’s replacement when he moves on.

    4. We need to target more Texas high school coach’s sons.  They’re hard workers and it helps with recruiting.  You never know when you will need the Giddings or Leander coach on your side to land the next blue chip from that school.

    5. This is more of a personal sentiment, but I hope we can all show more appreciation to the paysite guys who work tirelessly at 7 on 7 tournaments to provide us information.  They provide an honest, valuable service and the ingratitude to them is troubling.

What do you mean “those families”?

Who is right more frequently, contributors on this board, or shilling mouthbreathers trying to salvage some favor with the UT staff over at 247? I’ll never forget when Howe wrote the article comparing Swoopes to VY and defended Brown not pursuing JT Barrett. Or the many articles defending Shawn Watson and telling us the offense had turned a corner heading into 2015. Or the Chip Brown hit piece. Or EJ Holland telling us all that Marcel Brooks was “this close” to visiting and getting an offer. And on and on. Yeah, they’ve got their finger on the pulse.

Remember when Swoopes was a 5 star and the number one ranked player in the state at one point? That was cool.

    <insert Chris Farely pic>

Remember when  Chris Whaley ran the 100M in 7,000 seconds finishing behind the kids in wheelchairs but the sites still told us he was a blue chip RB prospect? That was cool.

So, how do you feel about your posting style? Do you feel like you have any pent up anger?

Is it because a famous football player punched you in the face during a basketball game for "no reason" after you dove at his feet and talked shit at a football game months earlier? Is it because Sydney use to drive a nicer car than you? Tell me about it?

Do you feel like your homosexuality makes life more difficult for you?

@Machinator I think one of the DL takes has to be a JUCO with all 3 starters graduating.  May even look at grad transfers down road as well.

We signed a pretty legit DL class this year. I assume our core starters for 2019 are going to be true sophomores from that class. Unless you think it will be hard for Ojomo to start at 14 years old.

The only reason people put up with your shouting down of everyone with a differing opinion is because you regularly drop useful information. I'm not even taking a side in the arguments because I rarely post, but I do appreciate everyone who contributes on this thread. However, Oscar Giles isn't in the same vein as Warehime or Mehringer in my book.  Your jihad against him is strange. Obviously his recruiting is less than ideal, but the vitriol shown toward him is breathtaking. He is a Longhorn and no Longhorn who is mediocre to bad at their job deserves to have comments like the above thrown their way. Simply because he didn't get some football recruits you wanted. Be better as a person.

Do you even Shaggy, bro? We rip on anyone and anything without mercy. It’s like South Park on steroids. We even take pride in tearing into each other for sport.

Huh I didn't know that. I really didn't start following recruiting until about 2013, so I'm clueless about most things regarding recruiting before then.

I still remember when Ricky signed and McWhorter was the most worthless fucking recruiter we have had since I have  been following Texas football.
