  1. I know the answer to Question 1. One of the spring DCTFs, of that era, answered it. Aggie boosters pressured Bellard to take Tom Wilson on his staff as OC, to modernize the offense with pro style passing. Bellard took Wilson on staff, but kept running the wishbone. The Ags faltered a little, and the seat heated up. Bellard said, “Fuck this, I’m out of here” and Wilson took over as HC.
  2. Sure, it’s smart to departmentalize work so that one person is not responsible for too much. Still, how departments are organized, with who reports to whom, are important. Texas and Georgia are following the Saban model, with scouting reporting to the HC. OU says they are following the NFL model, which typically has a GM overseeing relatively autonomous personnel and coaching staffs. However, to me, they look more like the Dallas Cowboys, where the GM hires coordinators and limits coaching inputs to personnel decisions.
  3. There are more coaching and coaching-adjacent (scouting, analysts) jobs than ever before. The pay is ridiculous. It’s not a bad idea at all to see where your kid can catch on as an assistant trainer and enroll him there, and have him major in PE or kinesiology. If he fails to rise in that career, he ends up making six figures in a Texas suburb. And not once will he have to solve a problem requiring the use of the square root of negative one.
  4. Sure they can. People lose sensitivity to price in July and August, when the AC is out.
  5. The SEC dominated men’s basketball this past season, for obvious reasons. Now, ACC and B12 schools can use their House settlement commitments primarily on basketball, but it will come at the expense of competitive football. Will be interesting to follow.
  6. Do we know if Venables is like a Cowboys HC, not allowed to overrule his OC’s play calls?
  7. I really try not to post in DT anymore, but this is such a powerful piece. https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/russian-soldiers-view-ukraine-war-749a0494?st=o4UC8q&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink
  8. Matt Hayes? That guy has been writing about college football for almost 30 years now. He has seen it all. Just kidding. He’s an idiot. Here is a saved copy of his pre-season 2005 article about who had a better QB, Texas or Texas A&M. He uses his keen insight and analytical abilities to cut through the hype.
  9. I don’t k ow how significant this is, but Nagy’s Moneyball scout staff lists six scouts on their website. Texas’ site shows 11 scouts.
  10. They don’t like the world the way it is now. They want it to be like it used to be. They know they are at a disadvantage, are pissed at their program’s leaders for not navigating this better, and can’t believe the rest of college football can possibly be ok with a world where OU struggles to compete.
  11. Here we go, from Sooner Scoop, an explanation for “why recruiting is going like it is…” https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/2026-recruiting.7643212/
  12. Really, what’s great is the total lack of understanding that maintaining a relationship requires both parties to get something out of it. That they never pause to discuss what would be in it for the SEC goes a long way to explain how the B12 felt about Texas, and why they say Texas betrayed them by leaving.
  13. I love the assumption that, of course, if TAMU went to the B1G, the SEC would invite them. No discussion of ratings (they do realize their stadium may be too small), no thought that the SEC may not want to offer a hand up to an unaccomplished program on the plains that is difficult to get to, brings no TV eyeballs and has a booster willing to fund NIL beyond what all but a couple of SEC teams can do.
  14. The TT message board has a convo about Tech joining the SEC. https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/refresh-memory-a-m-to-big10-tech-to-sec.7560970/
  15. I saw my dad in Waco last week. Driving out, I stopped at the TSHOF off University Parks and bought an issue.
  16. This is delicious. A SoonerScoop moderator explains how and why OU is where they are. https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/nil-collectives-that-didnt-last-long.7561589/page-2#post-158787039
  17. I don’t get all the hype on Burks the last couple of years. Phil Steele has him as the #8 draft eligible WR this year. Why? He has never had a 100 yard receiving game against a P4 team. He doesn’t have a remarkable size/speed combination. He must be unstoppable in practice.
  18. A little light googling shows that a lot of 18-22 year old pro soccer players in Europe, playing on developmental teams, make a lot of money, mid six figures to low seven figures. So, yeah, the market for cfb has a lot of room.
  19. Question- how do the donors funding TexasOne feel about this? I gather that a few guys have been making most of the contributions? I don’t think we should take their generosity for granted. Were they counting on the House settlement picking up a big part of the slack for them, to allow a transition away from big annual donations? I, of course, don’t k ow shit about fuck, but I kind of think the best long term move for Texas is to use Bellmont fundraising from rank and file to fund TexasOne.
  20. Yes. (You made me check, and I now see he was not a guy that redshirted, and came in the same class as Sanders)
  21. You can’t develop what doesn’t stick around. Development isn’t taking highly rated Kelvin Banks and delivering him to the NFL 1st round three years later. That guy came to Austin with physical traits and competitive attitude (and maturity) to where he was going to make it almost anywhere. Development is taking mid-rated guys like Gbenda and Helms, and bringing them along, maximizing their physical development, teaching them how to play their positions, to where they can get starts in year four and get drafted after year five. Sure Texas recruited JT Sanders after Helms was in campus; we are really glad they kept working on Helms (and Helms kept working). I think past Texas regimes, like Herman’s, was too focused on replacing those guys after a year or two of not flashing, hoping to hit on that next starry recruit. OU seems to be there now. CTJ’s post points out the number of guys that transferred out after not flashing early.
  22. Great summary. The thing that sticks out is how ready they are to move guys out of the program if they fail to flash in their first year (I’m assuming most of the ex-portals are encouraged by OU). If you want to develop players, you have to keep them around and work on them.
  23. lol. The top B12 teams are #29 and 30. Fox and (especially) ESPN are vastly overpaying for B12 media.
  24. Now, re-do the odds, using an exceptionally talented offensive pairing, but against a highly talented defense, in a high stakes game where the capable defense has prepared for it. Are we back to the baseline success rate?
  25. Some have noted that the $20.5M for the House settlement is a difficult lift for more ADs. Donations and severe cost cutting are needed. Just want to remind that there is another way. ADs can just get $20.5 M from regular university funds. Sure, it’s an ugly look. They’ll get over it.
