  1. Agree with the first part for sure. I think that’s tied up with the performative aspect of it-trying to create persecution where it doesn’t really exist. I’d probably agree with the second part too the way you phrased it here. I was speaking more to the initial motivation for someone engaging in this sort of spectacle.
  2. Ok?
  3. No one prevented you from praying in solitude and/or silence in the classroom or the on the football field either. I don’t think it’s primarily about proselytizing-there’s nothing particularly evangelistic about prayer, especially when it might feel compulsory. And I don’t think it’s primarily about control, either. That picture said it all: it’s performative. “Look at me! I’m so righteous!” And I say that as someone who IS religious.
  4. Of course it is. Those types have been around awhile: ”And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.” Edit: I was too slow.
  5. It’s probably people misusing “begs the question.”
  6. Still waiting for that eye roll reaction.
  7. We're actually more likely to have a problem with underpopulation within the next century.
  8. You don’t have to agree with National Review’s politics to acknowledge that they have pretty consistently called out the events of January 6 and the entire election fraud narrative. And I don’t know that I would count them as Trump supporters either. Just a random sampling from a quick search. https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/01/anniversary-of-a-disgrace/ https://www.nationalreview.com/the-morning-jolt/a-dark-day-in-america/ https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/11/trump-election-fraud-disgraceful-endgame/ https://www.nationalreview.com/2021/09/another-defeat-for-election-truthers/
  9. I had hot dogs tonight. They were delicious.
  10. God, deliver us from straw men.
  11. No zeal at all. Clearly.
  12. You’re pretty confident about the extent of human knowledge for a guy who can’t successfully post on a message board.
  13. This is right on. You lost me here.
  14. 1. Texas football 2. Green Bay Packers 3. Houston Astros Gap 4. Texas basketball Big gap 5. All other Texas sports, which I cate about more abstractly than actually watch.
  15. If you need to shower twice a day, you must be filthy and/or extremely fat.
  16. I’d like more clarification from the op on what this is all about. Chad Morris was a very successful high school coach who moved to an effective college OC to HC at SMU where he improved every year to 2 dismal seasons at Arkansas. He’s fired and is back in high school. He was successful basically every step of the way till Arkansas and then he moved back down the ladder. I guess I don’t understand what we mean by an upward failure for him to “absolutely define the appellation.”
  17. I don’t even turn it up to 79 when I’m gone on vacation. If that makes me a gaping pussy, I don’t care. But I’m not on ERCOT either.
  18. That’s not just anecdotal-I read some research in the last few months that indicates the same thing. I’ll see if I can dig that up later.
  19. I’m pretty sure you misread that post.
  20. I know this isn’t your primary point, but that’s precisely why some people came to the New World: they not only wanted to escape persecution, they wanted to establish their own religion as official. Roger Williams in Rhode Island stands out as the early exception. Religious freedom as we think of it was foreign to them.
