Had an aggy watch it here at the house watching it. Kept asking him who they were playing today. He got pissed and drank all the bourbon.

Hope you had him drinking Old Crow while you and the others enjoyed the good stuff.

We have a chance to get in over Oregon.

Don't really think so.  If Oregon and Texas both win, they would both be one-loss conference champions.  But Oregon's loss is to a top-5 team (Washington), whereas Texas lost to a lower-ranked BlowU squad.  IOW, Oregon has the "better loss."  Also, Oregon is currently ranked ahead of Texas.  Can't really see the Committee leapfrogging Texas over Oregon under the circumstances if they both win.

There was a nice post on Facebook by one of the Alvin brothers -- I think Dave -- about this.  They were good buds.

Ironically, I learned about his death via a Facebook post by Marshall Crenshaw, who was part of the same NYC scene in the late 70's and early 80's.  I'll have to check out DA's post.

  4. Just learned that Scott Kempner died yesterday.  If the name isn't familiar, google The Dictators and/or The Del Lords.  Kempner a/k/a Top Ten was part of some really good music -- proto-punk and humorous straight-ahead rock in the Dictators and rootsier stuff in the Del Lords.

Between his death and that of Shane MacGowan of the Pogues, it's a sad day for edgy, honest, rock and roll (both Celtic- and NYC-influenced).

Guess I'll be listening to Go Girl Crazy! in addition to Rum, Sodomy & the Lash tonight . . .

  5. Unsurprising news, sadly.  He inflicted so much damage on his liver.  Was a perfect front man for the Pogues, a great band.

I'll probably spin Rum, Sodomy & the Lash tonight (or maybe If I Should Fall From Grace, or both) and toast him with some whiskey.

So my EDC knife needs sharpening pretty bad, but I was in a hurry last weekend when I was going hunting, so I just grabbed a knife that had a pretty good edge out of the box of knives I got from my grandfather when he passed away and slipped it in my pocket. Well, last night I was laying on the couch and it fell out of my pocket, so I looked it up. Apparently I've been just casually carrying around quite a collectible.

    Any idea how old?

  7. O'Connell coached a really bad game.  Total shit show on offense, which is his department.  Stupid decision to go for it on 4th and 7 on his side of the field leads to 3 points for Chicago.  And then when the Vikings had an opportunity to pad the lead and at least make Chicago drive the field and score a TD (something they hadn't been able to do ALL FUCKING NIGHT) his playcalling showed no imagination and his offense couldn't even pick up a yard.  Just a really bad job on his part.

  8. pretty stupid decision to go for it on 4th and 7 on your side of the field.  You have an offense that is struggling (only 76 yards the entire first half) and a defense that has been playing well (only 3 points allowed in the first half).  The decision should have been to punt.

However, the most instructive activity Bjork and his team undertook, as he recounted Monday, was a research project that studied how each national champions in the SEC are built.

"The more you look at it, the simpler it gets. The majority of the winners have these things in common: a defensive-minded head coach, a championship-level culture, recruit and acquire elite NFL-type talent, play great offense and score a lot of points with a high-level quarterback," Bjork said.

    It's simple.  So simple.

Yet aggy has never even sniffed winning the SEC, and the last time they won a NC was just after Hitler invaded Poland.

For those who are too young to appreciate just what a mind blowing game changer Jimi Hendrix was, this video provides a nice summary.  Also appropriate for the rest of us fans, a few days in advance of what would have been Jimi's 81st birthday.

Thanks for this.  I had an appreciation for how groundbreaking his Monterey Pop performance was, but did not know the backstory on his Hollywood Bowl gig.
