  1. Since we're separating this out of the F/SF thread to discuss story morals (morality?) - I've really enjoyed the recent trend (last 10-15 years) for authors in the genre to 'up their game' to propose social questions. Abercrombie, along with Mark Lawrence and (more recently) Rob J. Hayes are all British writers that have been described as 'gritty' but I've been convinced they're making social commentary in the vein of the powerful elite vs. the enlightened heroes. We could spend hours and countless thousands of pixels going back and forth on the merits of this style (especially if we compare it to other current works, such as the Corey's Expanse theme of "there are no easy shortcuts in life") but I hope it continues. Great writing should do two things in my opinion (opinion alert! opinion alert!): Be entertaining (well written, interesting story, character development, etc.) Stimulate personal growth and development If Abercrombie's writing stirs something in you (or anyone else) to say "I believe in 'XYZ' and I'm going to do something about it" then he succeeded - but that brings up another question: Should a writer use dark/depressing/gritty themes to motivate/influence readers?
  2. Chileans love their native wines and Pisco Sour's. Where will you be going? The north is dominated by deserts, the middle is gloriously temperate this time of year (fall is starting) and the south will be stormy but remind you of the US Pacific NW. Pisco Sour for reference:
  3. Haven't seen this one brought up for discussion yet.
  4. MTF? I grew up in Chugiak and it was always the strain of choice.

This is all you need to know.
  6. Why not let Tex Johnson explain how a 1G roll has zero risk?
  7. Finished Leviathan Falls (Expanse book 9) the other day. Definitely a wrap up that's going to take a few more days to process - sometimes I'm thumbs up, sometimes I'm only slightly thumbs up (the epilogue, however, I'm full thumbs up with no hesitation). I find that while I understand both the plot/moral/message and the culmination of said plot/moral/message I sometimes feel the final book wasn't as suspenseful/captivating as the earlier installments. It's almost as though you could anticipate what was going to happen not because of simple things like foreshadowing but because it could only work out that way (logic?). I'm wondering if any of y'all have finished it and what your thoughts on it are. Could use some bookfag/club thoughts from the group - some different perspectives over things I might be missing I guess.
  8. Soooo..... where would one go to have a bumper sticker saying "God Bless Bo Davis" be made? Asking for a frie... **** no, asking for my damn self.
  9. The University of Texas at Austin Football summary for the last 10 seasons: 77 Wins 54 Losses 57.5% Win percentage Zero Conference Championships (only one CCG Appearance) I'd like to thank the custodians of a once-proud program that have made our blue-blood football team irrelevant. All of them, and their excuses, are about as useful as tits on bull.
  10. Bill Shattner & Lady GaGa? Who knew?
  11. His latest trilogy could perhaps be a mixed bag for folks who have read his other works: he revisits a lot of areas from his first trilogy with new characters intermingled with a few old ones (/no spoiler). For some it might feel run on but I actually enjoyed it - he's clearly continuing to refine his skill as a writer.
  12. Jafromobile.
  13. I know I will end up with neg bombs but I support this. Tech is closer to the ag school our state should have had, instead of the dipshits we suffer with.
  14. Frontlines by Kloos next!
  15. If they're the Mi-8/17's rebuilt by the Czech's (Lom Praha) then they're awesome.
  16. What are the locations of the event you have in the morning vs. the afternoon?
  17. JFC, you people need to study history more. What killed the SWC didn't start inside the conference - it was changing monetary dynamics of college football. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_v._Board_of_Regents_of_the_University_of_Oklahoma
  18. Project 1999 - Free version of EQ through Velious, Very passionate players.
  19. Wait - if pussy is undefeated, which pussy? And how many count in that video?
  20. The Eddings series needs to be made.
