I need a hip joint ortho doctor in Austin

anybody got a recommendation for New Orleans?  My daughter is having some hip issues and she is frigging young.  Years of soccer, cross country and dumbass half marathons may have taken a toll.  She has had on and off again hip issues the last couple months.  I think some 15 degree treadmill work was what started it.

Frosty Moore, MD.
Head of Sportsmed for Rodeo Austin... I have prob. known him for 15 years

Done both my Mom's knees, recently (~2 months ago) did her L shoulder... probably going to do a hip before the end of '21 (assuming humanity survives 2020).

Squared me up from cracked ribs & busted clavicle after one of my horses threw me around 11 years ago.

Also... pitched on the National Championship Longhorns baseball team in '75.

Something like 15,000 total arthroscopies & total joint replacements.

That's my referral.

Never heard a bad thing about this guy. His name comes up almost every time I hear anyone asking for an ortho rec.

Bump. Going in tomorrow for my left hip replacement (severe degenerative osteoarthritis, bone on bone).

Matthew Heinrich is my doc. Excellent reviews, and by multiple accounts 'the guy' in Texas for hip replacements. People come from all over Texas and even out of state to see him. I was gonna go with Frosty, but Heinrich's resume is just too good, and I think from what I can gather that Frosty is semi-retired and is just helping his boys now. I'm sure they are all excellent.

Doing it at their surgical center in Lakeway, so no hospital stay or the associated bills. Outpatient. Should only be there a few hours total. They'll send me home and they want me up and moving the same day, but probably with a walker at first. MUCH less expensive than I anticipated, at least on my end.

Surgery will be in the front, not the back like they used to do. Smaller incision, no cutting of the muscles, leading to better/quicker/easier recovery. Not looking forward to the rehab, but I know I need to go ahead and do this.

In at 11am. Headed to the car at 5:30pm. Can walk around, but using a walker just for safety at first. There was some moderate aching starting an hour or two after I got home, but now that pain has eased even though I still haven't take any pain meds, not even tylenol.  Crazy. I just had a significant part of my body removed and replaced by a prosthesis that was placed into a hole drilled into my femur, and it hurts far less than a toothache.

Smooth operation from start to finish. Like a really awesome nap. They have their shit wired tight. Everyone was fantastic.

Day 6:

Surgery was a breeze. It's the recovery period that's a pain. Not all that painful, just tedious. You have to stay seated most of the time, with your legs elevated, compression socks on both lower legs, big ice pack on your hip, and calf compressors squeezing your legs intermittently to prevent blood clots. Every hour you have to get up and walk a little & do some exercises, which is actually no problem. You have to do this every day, all day, so there's not much else you can do besides just hanging out. It's tedious, but not very painful, and I'm improving slowly every day, losing soreness, getting stronger & more mobile, etc. I've been getting by fine on Tylenol. I took a tramadol each of the first 2 nights, but none since.

ou SUCKS!

  • 2 weeks later...

2 week checkup. Actually 17 days since surgery. Had my checkup yesterday. Been getting better, stronger, more mobile, more range of motion little by little every day. Been walking without the walker for a few days. And the last couple of days I've been walking pretty normally and without pain. There are already things I can do better now than I could before the surgery.

At my checkup yesterday they removed my bandage & everything looks great, so now I don't have to be so careful when I shower. I can start walking as much as is comfortable for me. I can get in the pool/hot tub in a week. Two more weeks of the compression socks. They're honestly the worst thing about the whole ordeal. That and being limited on sleeping positions at night, but now I can start laying on my operative side in bed a little bit, so that will help. The socks are a total pita to put on. No longer have to wear them in bed at night though, so I got that goin' for me, which is nice. I still can't put the sock on my surgery leg, so Mrs. Wood (no pics, you sick bastards) has to do it for me. Still have to keep my feet elevated as much as possible all day and use the calf compressors at least 30 minutes each day.

At 2 weeks they changed my exercise routine, but it's still very easy. Twice a day.
