It appears pitching injury season is officially upon the Rangers.

What started out as a potential extra day of rest for Tyler Mahle has quickly progressed to a potential assignment to the injured list with a recurrence of a shoulder issue. It would place a second member of what has been one of MLB’s best starting rotations to date on the IL and would force the premature return of Kumar Rocker.

Rocker, who pitched on Tuesday for Triple-A Round Rock, joined the Rangers on Saturday, but was not activated. Because he has not been in the minors for a minimum of 15 days, the only way to recall him would be as a replacement for a pitcher going on the IL. Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that Mahle’s shoulder was an issue in his last start at Minneapolis and was part of the Rangers’ decision to move his next start back.

“We’ve got to see where we are at there,” Bochy said.
