One Battle After Another, the next Paul Thomas Anderson film

Unpopular Opinion Alert:

I never saw There Will Be Blood [ducks] . . . until last night. My wife and I decided to watch it after loving One Battle After Another, since this site and other critics say There Will Be Blood is one of the best, if not the best, PTA film.

We didn’t love it [ducks again]. The cinematography and score were outstanding. Daniel Day Lewis’s performance was great, but felt disjointed (I guess that’s the point since his character was a sociopath). I just didn’t dig the overall story line. (Side note: Tarantino is a whiny self-important bitch for recently going off on Paul Dano.)

I think Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and One Battle After Another are better than There Will Be Blood [I’ll just stay ducked].

I somewhat understand what you mean about the story line. The movie prompted me to read the book because I felt I needed more context. I read it, re-watched the movie, and it then made perfect sense. I also had to remind myself of Sinclair.

But, that's a lot of effort. I primarily did it because it was so popular at the time and I couldn't understand completely. I do now.

Upon reflection I do think it’s weird that after the shitshow of a life she’s had, and her two awful parents, the daughter ran right back towards that life. As a parent of two teenagers I think it would have made more sense for her to blaze her own trail.

well, her dad loves her. he might be a burnout ex revolutionary paranoid pothead slacker but he loves her and went to considerable lengths to save her from evil. he’s not a conventional worlds best dad but he got the main thing right.

it's fine. the acting and scenery are wonderful, but the plot is fairly average. one battle after another is better.
