Would love to have a thread where we talk about new Austin music and bands.  By that I mean recent bands... up and coming... lesser known...  yes, could be a band like Die Spitz (cough cough @jimmyjazz ) or someone maybe newer or just making their name.  Just really not something like old Austin music like Marcia Ball's latest release (sorry to Marcia Ball... just trying to find an older example that is not SRV).  Basically a place to share newish bands with each other.  I'm a big fan of going to shows like Free Week, Hot Summer Nights, random lineups at Empire, Far Out, Hole in the Wall, etc.  (which reminds me I really need to catch a band at Friendly Rio Market)

Bring'em on.  I'm not big on country so you won't see that from me although I can dig some bluegrass/Americana live since I have friends who play in that scene.  In fact, I'll lead with that... here's a few that I'll share.

Pecan Street Preachers - friends with these guys.  Dustin really only started playing and recording about 3 years ago and his friend Graham has helped him get off the ground.  They started Pecan Street Preachers last year.  Played Saxon last night and will be playing the main stage at Luckenbach in June.

Anyway, a few others...

Queen Serene usually plays places like Hotel Vegas, 13th Floor, etc.  Big fan of their loud, fuzzy sound that is almost hypnotic

Figure Factor - Trying to find more shows by them but I really like their post-punk sound.  Saw them at Elysium - they were great:

https://figurefactor.bandcamp.com/track/hip-check

https://figurefactor.bandcamp.com/album/rituals-in-transfigured-tone

Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad - went to one of their record release shows.  Great band.  Straight up rock.

The Past Lives - Strong recommendation of seeing them live.   First saw them at ACL in 2022.  Knew nothing about them (most knew nothing about them) and they blew doors. Very dynamic frontman... great show.

Being Dead is far from a secret... kind of has a California surf-inspired sound.  Saw them open for Husbands at 3Ten and then caught them again at ACL last year.  Great on-stage dynamic.  Really funny and very talented.

Grocery Bag.  @jimmyjazz and I were messaging about them before catching them play a free show at Blazer Tag.  Yes, Blazer Tag.  Can't remember the full line up but I think it was Magic Rockers of Texas, Prehuman, Queen Serene and Grocery Bag.  Saw them play a SXSW day show at Hotel Vegas, too.  Loud and full of energy.

DAIISTAR oh man I love the wall of sound they bring.  Already signed with Fuzz Club and starting to tour Europe.  So good and so loud live.  I mean, when you end up on KEXP...

If you recognize the tambourine player in the DAIISTAR KEXP performance, its Lindsey Mackin from Annabelle Chairlegs which is such a great band...

I'm not very dialed in, but I know these kids.  My daughter used to be their drummer, and now their new drummer is her roommate (among others).  Kinda psych-ey grunge-y rock, there's some songwriting talent there.  I really like the saturated 'verbed out sound.

that second song is a legit banger. really enjoyed that one as well as the slow tempo third song. i will seek these guys out...thanks, jimmy. the rest of the songs sound really nice too.

that bass player is pure stage presence...lol. in my perfect world, that lead singer gives him a chance and changes his entire essence forever. that whole band is so mismatched in terms of stage presence...that girl gets to carry all the water.

eta: lol, their top songs on the streamers is "greg abbott's maxi pad."

i have to say, i find it incredibly fascinating that most of the music that jimmy throws out there that i have never heard of but sometimes dig always in some way takes me back to his favorite band of all time...garbage.

i think a psychologist could have a real field day with that one...

My mother taught me that if you don't have something nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all.

Caught The Point again on Saturday night at the Sahara Lounge.  Man, their talent and the energy is so infectious.  They brought the house down, again.  All three of them are great but Nico Leophonte on drums always blows my mind.  So good!

(Not from that particular show...)

I can't believe I haven't posted The Living Pins on this thread.  They should be bigger.  Basically, they're a duo with backing musicians -- Carrie Clark (Sixteen Deluxe) and Pam Peltz (Ursa Major).  Slightly fuzzy psych-power-pop.  Really catchy stuff.  Check 'em out.

They’re leaning into it. 5:10 mark has a heart shaped box mention.

No, not really new but a great band and these free shows by auditorium shores are great!  Best view in town for good live music.  You can get the free tickets (have to get them in advance) through the Long Center.

May be an image of 5 people and text that says 'ብየ LONG CENTER KADI the Long Center presents DROP-IN powered by KUTX poweredbyKUTX98.9 98.9 BROWNOUT MAy 22 Long Center DR තුමා the サN'

Oh, and I'm pissed I missed this Je'Texas show.  They're so good.

Are they part of the Brown Hornet collective?  I saw them provide the soundtrack to an old silent film (Nosferatu?) at the Paramount, it was very cool.  I think Graham Reynolds played with them.

No, they are part of the Grupo Fantasma "tree" like Money Chicha.  Quesada was in the band but I'm not sure he plays with them anymore.

Great music... have released some excellent albums covering Black Sabbath and Public Enemy.  AND when Ozzy likes you...

If you think of it in real time, can you post the artist reveals for that?

You got it. You can also sign up for their email list and they will usually announce it the end of the week and then you can sign up for the tickets on Monday

Still haven't seen this band live.  Figure its one I go see by myself since their shows are usually late and my wife finds their sound a bit overwhelming.  I like some of the noisy chaoticness of their songs.

This was a fun show.  First three bands are about as new as you can get.  Each a little different but lots of talent.  ChiCon Mal was really interesting.  Vocals fine but the guitar playing was excellent... Only $5

Where did they set up?

Upstairs... I think the area is normally used for a sports simulator which is why you see golf clubs in the picture

I think I'll go back to catch the National Band of Texas at Rio Market later in the month:

Hot Summer Nights lineup just dropped...

I want to go see Pussy Gilette again.  Plan on seeing Gus Baldwin & the Sketch, Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band, Queen Serene/Prehuman (99% sure they'll be on the same bill) and... finally... its time to see one of the best-named bands in Austin... Subpar Snatch (well, tied with Chancla Fight Club)

Hot Summer Nights next week. Anyone going?  Plan on hitting it Friday with a friend and Saturday with my wife.  No Coldplay cover bands, thankfully.

Probably going to hit this show in August...

Well, feels like this is all me talking into the void but, that's OK... maybe someone will pick up on a band or two here.

Went to Hot Summer Nights for two nights.  One night by myself where I got to see what I wanted and the second night with my wife so I had to filter the bands to see.  Case in point... I would have loved to have gone to see Pussy Gillette on Saturday but definitely not someone my wife would want to see.  If you like lots of local musicians for free and missed this year's edition of Hot Summer Nights, keep a lookout for HAAM Day in September and Free Week usually in January.  Also, here's a link I found on reddit that allows you to sort what is going on around town - https://pushgig.com/

So, here's what I saw...

  • Alma Muneca - Empire Control Room - Spanish-language electronic/dance/post-punk music.  Singer is a smoke show... vocals were OK but the backing band (two guys on synth and a drummer) were excellent.  I think they are playing a show in two weeks with DAIISTAR (strong recommendation on DAIISTAR)
  • Semihelix - The 13th Floor - Catchy indie rock trio.  Good show and energy.  Not a standout per se but I'd see them again.
  • Daze - Mohawk (outside) - Shoegaze band from Houston.  I love the wall of guitar sounds a shoegaze band can bring.  Good show, great light show from the crew at Mohawk.  Would see again.
  • Geda - Mohawk (inside) - felt like a late 80s EBM show (Electronic Body Music, not Electronic Dance Music) with two silhouttes on stage with their synths playing in front of weird projected images.  Liked it but you have to be a fan of the old EBM/Industrial scene to get it, I think.
  • Subpar Snatch - The 13th Floor - finally got to see them. Great show!  Amazing energy and fire from the band.  Would absolutely go see them again.
  • Prehuman - Chess Club - Caught the last bit of their set.  Like Chess Club as a venue although it is small and always cramped.  Anyway, they have more of an up-and-coming shoegaze sound.  Seen them four times in various venues over the past year.
  • Bartly - Marlow - We were mostly on the patio and at the bar so I didn't get a good feel.  Great energy and talent but too many covers for me (I'm not a cover band person. Sorry)
  • Cast of Thousands - Empire Control Room - Only caught a couple of songs.  Indy rock.  There's potential here but feels like they need more work bringing it all together.  Just my opinion.
  • J'cuuzi - Mohawk (outside) - Y'all... I went in with expectations of a freakish show and it absolutely delivered.  Really don't know how to describe them.  Here is how they describe themselves, "Avant-garde mutant pop performance group".  Yup.
  • Jane Leo - The 13th Floor - This was the third time we've seen Jane Leo.  They've got a great infections 80's synth sound to me influenced by the likes of Berlin.  They're always a solid show.
  • Rococo Disco - Stubb's Indoors - Pleasant surprise.  Good vibes and crowd with an R&B tinged party sound.

Bands I wished I had seen but could not due to various reasons:

  • Queen Serene - couldn't go Thursday.  A band I'm always glad to catch.  Shoegaze/rock-driven wall of sound.  Almost hypnotic to me.  A bit noisy.  I love it.  I did spot them in the audience at one show.
  • Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - Still have not seen them... hear great things about the live shows.  Timing is always off for me.
  • Daydream Twins - Heard they are a fantastic local shoegaze band
  • Font - apparently they had to cancel so had to scratch them off the schedule
  • Andrew Cashen and the Disciples of Creation - Great great live show.  Caught them at the Drop in earlier in the summer
  • Nuclear Daisies - more shoegaze.  Apparently was a great show at Mohawk.
  • Gus Baldwin and the Sketch - Punk/rock/lots of energy.  One day... wife would not have been interested at all
  • Mugger - Female-fronted punk band

Subpar Snatch at The 13th Floor:

you aren't. don't think that your additions in this thread don't get read.

i'll admit that our tastes don't exclusively overlap (you have a much higher tolerance for nonsense than me - which is a good thing) but about 10-15% of the stuff you post here leads to me listening to some new stuff so it is appreciated.

also, "subpar snatch" is a pretty fucking awesome name and sounds like it came from a surly "that would make a great band name" post. great band visual. unfortunately, another one that i gave a 20 minute try out to based on top streamed tracks and gonna have to move on. they do seem like they'd be an entertaining live show though.

Yeah so I agree I do take risks but have found that live shows make all the difference.  Subpar Snatch honestly might not make my rotation on Spotify but I will gladly catch one of their live shows.  Funny... the name is what originally caught my eye just like another band, Chancla Fight Club.  Great names!

@jimmyjazz yeah so it is Jane Ellen Bryant and Leo as in Daniel Leopold.  Established local musicians.
