This is actually an understatement.

I was actively rooting against the "protagonist" about halfway through. Maybe that was the point, but it was just a terrible movie, poorly told. 130 minutes of shit and then it turns into multiple poorly done movie cliches at the end.

Before that the story was all luck and coincidence and absurd plot points. The soundtrack for some reason leaned on 80s pop for a film set in the 50s. Even that was dumb.

There wasn't anything interesting about it. Nothing. Except maybe George Gervin's cameo. As a Spurs fan that was legitimately the only redeeming thing about the film.

I went in knowing nothing. They could have made it a sports movie, which I thought it may have been, about a table tennis player and it could have been great.

The wife wanted to see this one. I now get to choose the next 5 movies minimally, just based on how shitty this choice was.

surprised mind reading GIF

What you wrote pretty much was our conversation on the drive home.

The music never fit, there is nothing that makes you care about any of the characters outside of possibly Endo, and we did find ourselves guessing if that truly was George Gervin and who played the farmer who found the dog.

I truly believe this is a perfect example of people not wanting to call out total shit of a movie because of who made it, starred in it etc.....

Rewatched Scream again and barely noticed that Kenny the Cameraman who got shit from Courtney Cox was also Warren in There’s Something About Mary.

Ok - Marty Supreme. We liked it but didn’t love it. It’s def the kind of movie - A24 types will appreciate and more casual movie goers will be like “WTH was that even about?” If you like Safdie’s other stuff you know what you are in for I think. TC is a superstar and will get an Oscar nom.

Somewhere around a 6.5/7 out of 10 for us.

WTF was the honey scene?

I thought Marty Supreme was great — particularly the performances of Chalamet, Paltrow, and yes Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary. Also loved the music and score. But, not surprised that it won’t be for everyone.

I’m guessing y’all who hated it felt the same way about Uncut Gems?

I love that one too, but this movie and protagonist were silly and fun in comparison and I definitely felt that while watching.

I started watching Uncut Gems and bailed after about 30 minutes, so I guess I shouldn’t even bother with Marty Supreme

We have tickets to see Marty Supreme on the 31st after a boozy lunch. Wife and I are both A24 dorks and loved Uncut Gems so hopefully Marty Supreme doesn’t suck.

Marty Supreme is about an underdog that’s not particularly likable and a fairly shitty human being. And there is no redemption arc to speak of. If you think a protagonist needs to be mostly a good guy this movie is not for you.

I have enjoyed some of A24's work and others no so much.

Didn't care for Uncut Gems because there wasn't anyone in the movie I could find to give a shit about to invest my time into the plot. Have read and talked about people who described all the tension at the end and the only tension to me was for it to get over so I could go piss because I didn't care what happened to Sandler's character.

Multiply that by a factor of 10 for Marty Supreme for my family and I.

I have no idea how in the world one could perceive the protagonist as silly or fun. Fuck the most fun guy is this piece of shit is his playing partner who had a sense of humor about the world and I mean the one with the ink and not the cab. I won't say anymore not to spoiler it, but this feels like a PTA or Wes movie were some people are never going to say they don't like it because they don't want to be perceived as not being in on the joke so to speak.

Seinfeld terms they don't want to be seen as Elaine when she didn't understand the cartoon in the New Yorker.
