I mean, Utah has just taken over that state from a school has many more natural advantages, more fans, a bigger stadium, and a bigger budget.

Really impressive.

They haven't taken over that state.  The BYU fant base still outnumbers Utah's 3-1, and it's a tossup between BYU and UU for the states top recruits.  But Utah has weak JC level academic requirements and no self-imposed restrictions while BYU does and an academic qualification requirements that are unrealistically high for a competitive program.  That's how we lost Star Lotuleilei who originally committed to us but didn't qualify academically.

Shit, Utah now looks like they're in the driver's seat to win the Pac-12 South, and BYU is playing fucking Northern Illinois tomorrow and will play at UMass in a couple of weeks.  Seriously, what sort of remotely respectable program plays at UMass?

This is Rich Man, Poor Man stuff.

I have so much respect for Utah's program.

Consistently good without a natural recruiting base.

Much better than BYU without relying on 23-yo sophomores.

and it's 21 year old sophomores.   They can go on missions now when they are 18.  And it's not really an advantage anyways since they come home out of shape and rusty having not worked out or trained for 2 full years.    If anything it's a disadvantage.

well playing as an independent BYU has put together a pretty good schedule for several years into the future

Teams playing at UMass this year and last:

Duquesne

Charlotte

USF

BYU (AND BYU LOST TO UMASS!!!)

Coastal Carolina

Liberty

Hawaii

ODU

App State

GaSouthern

Ohio

Let's face facts -- BYU is at best a mediocre G5 program and Utah is probably playing in the Pac-12 Championship game.  Utah State has a better program than BYU.

yea well if we are going by a single team that BYU played in one season or if we are going by a couple of seasons yea you have a very very very small point

but of course a couple of years ago anyone out there could use your same points to say that BYU was a shit tonne better than Texas because they ran their asses over two years in a row

Hell, they were better than Texas back then.

But it's pretty obvious that the current pecking order in Utah now goes..

1.  Utes

2.  Utah Aggies

<big drop>

3.  BYU

That's indisputable.  Unless you want to argue that Dixie State is better than BYU.

using a single season or even a couple of seasons to rank the overall status of a program in their state makes no sense at all nor does picking out a single poor opponent especially for a team that is independent and in the western USA which puts them at two disadvantages for scheduling

BYU puts together a quality schedule year in and year out and they easily have the record over Utah State especially in recent long term history

Utah is luck the PAC 12 is full of schools that discriminate against religion and that they were desperate to get to 12 after Texas and the rest said no thanks

and Utah is hardly a power in the PAC 12 or in college football in general

I think another poster put it best when he said that "Utah is the Kansas State of the Pac12".

Is Chip Kelly so fully exposed he never gets a decent coaching gig again? He might tear it up at an FCS school or something..

Then again UCLA may be patient and he may actually get things going the next 3 years or so, who knows...but this is pathetic.

This.   They passed over BYU because of religion and politics.   Any other rationalization thrown out there is a smoke screen.   The Liberal Pac 12 presidents arre anti-religion and this move reflected that.  Utah just so happened to be a state school in the same region who happened to have 2 great seasons in their pathetic history.
