I think I had a book by the same title from the same author, Gowland, back in my college days, but it was modern, at least for the times. Pretty decent photo book, but not enough tips on how to get the whores to pose for you.

This is a 1967 revision of a 1954 copyright.
He does suggest not using your photography to get a girl “out in the woods” but no mention of whore posing.

Cannot decide a favorite from this last group but as always the nature pics are tops along with the hearse and the ASMA train graffiti. The last one is as much for the graffiti as it is for the pic. Those artists are so talented!

@DougO your bird photos are awesome.

It was sitting inside the gate of an abandoned funeral home. I wanted to try to find a way in, but too many folks walking around and it is not in the kind of hood you just fuck around in.

My Yashica came in, but I am disappointed in the quality. Part of that is my fault. I am looking to buy another and either sell this one or just keep it as a shelf piece.

I started messing with off camera flash. I mean just started. Anyway, one of my cousins dropped by while I was playing with the toys and I made him sit for just a minute for me. I didn't focus, I'd had it "pre-set" on a cardboard box that I'd had in the chair so I'm not too concerned about it being out of focus. Generally happy with the result though.

Thank you very kindly, sir! It has been nice to get out a bit more when the sun is actually not totally blocked out by thickass clouds so I can get some nature photos.

Swayze, how are you feeling about your drone purchase? Would you choose the same again today? I'm starting to consider options on a moderately priced setup, but really know nothing about it. It would mostly be for use on the family property.

I am happy with it, although I am not flying it as much as I thought I would. Some of that is due to weather. Also trying to come up with interesting shots that haven’t already been done a million times is challenging. But I think it’s fun and gives a new perspective. I don’t think you can go wrong with the mavic 2.

I'm not in it as much for creative purposes, but looking at our family property, getting some aerial shots for reference and time comparison, and in case I need to find one of the critters or something.  Probably wouldn't take it out on public much, especially now that they are pushing the license thing.

Butterly lighting

Yeah, it's my first attempt at anything really. I need to stick with black and white probably just to keep things simple wrt to light and shadow. I might be able to get a job at the DMV though, could even work my way up to Sears some day. ;)

I find this exercise helpful due to the small number of moving parts and think it will help me see light better overall. I'm probably getting ahead of myself but I'm getting a second light to use with a little slip on soft box. A 3rd light and I could do some rim lighting.  I've got a fairly small living room but have rearranged it a couple of times just this weekend setting up and tearing down the gear. I can set up a reasonable facsimile of studio in about 15 minutes now. Not counting the stand the whole kit fits in a shoe box. I know me and I'm sure I'll lose interest in this aspect by spring but that's alright. I can come back to it next winter or just whenever.

Tried to get creative. I unfortunately have white walls so couldn't get exactly what I was aiming for. I'd probably need to also fashion a snoot and would still need some black fabric to drape over things. Sigh.  A proper studio would be fun.

Holy shit, the memories!

I was a last minute replacement Ambassador from El Salvador to the Model UN in Wichita,  freshman year, 1966. We stayed at the Broadview Hotel and I bought that book from the lobby book and magazine shop. My very first porn purchase. I was able to smuggle it into the house in one of my Dad's hand-me-down attache cases that also held everything there was to know about El Salvador that could be found in Encyclopedia Britannica.

Use the white walls to your advantage and bounce your flash off of them for softer lighting. It's one of the many cheap but effective things you  can learn from the strobist blog.

I mean bounce the light from the flash. Don't literally chunk your flash unit up against the well, despite having the urge to do so.

So the Yashica Electro 35 GSN came in the other day. I am not sure if I am more disappointed in my rusty eBay skills, or the really dim viewfinder. It’s in ok shape, but certainly has issues. So I started to research some more and decided to get the GL model. I almost went with the Canonet that Anton Sugar has, but decided to stick with the plan of a non canon camera. It should be here from Japan in a couple of weeks. Looks near mint and the seller had a shot through the viewfinder and it was very bright. If this one doesn’t work out, I’ll give up for now and stick with my Canons.

Here is the GSN. Not sure what I will do with it. I have a roll of expired film in it now to test it.

My Canonets could use a cleaning of the internal viewfinder glass. One of them needs a viewfinder alignment too but is almost mint otherwise. Still need to send them to the repair guy.

If I need to do that, I'll bounce the flash off the walls for sure. I was trying to get a black background though, I got a little closer to what I wanted this evening. Had to use some contrast in post processing to get it where it ended up but it's aight I guess. I did this with just a bare flash. Figured I'd break it down to the basics. I made notes of what I was doing so I can set it up again if I want and play with it.

If you are talking about adding 2nd lights, 3rd lights, snoots etc, then I'd say you are going beyond the basics.

If you want a darker background, just move the subject away from the wall. Even a White background will turn dark if things are positioned properly

I had to leave room to place the camera, lol. It's a tiny room.

You can also fabricate a quick snoot by rolling some black paper or stiff fabric around your flash head, thus focusing the light towards the subject and eliminating most of the stray sidelight from bouncing off the walls.

I hadn't really thought of a cheap way to do it yet but I may give that a go. Thanks. HEB has black poster board for less than $2. I took a selfie last night with the miniature soft box (6"x5") that I bought ($11) and it's alright. I can shove it up much closer and still get the camera where I want it as opposed to using the umbrella. Light isn't quite as soft but I can think of ways to further diffuse it.

Went for a drive yesterday.  Was hoping for more abandoned places, but only found a few farmhouses.  Sometimes I like the lens distortion, sometimes I fix it, sometimes I am too lazy.  Anyone know why all these old farmhouses are usually painted blue or green?

Now, now is that Dale Gribble or is that that bonehead Rusty Shackleford? 'Cause I can't tell the two apart. Bobby, can you?

They are expensive as fuck. But from what I can tell they are pretty damn good. The only lens I have for it is the 24-105mm. I was thinking about the wide angle that just came out, but it looks like home renovations will detail that idea. So I have just been using my old lenses with the adapter. In close quarters I usually shoot with a sigma 12-24mm. I usually don’t go crazy with the corrections because I hate losing a lot of the photo in the crop.

Love the sound of an RB shutter release. Haven't used one of those for about 20 years now.

I bought a second manual flash this past week and figured out how to get it to act as an optical slave. Sounds simple until you take into account that all of these flashes are not the same and are not intuitive, at all. Having 2 lights should keep me busy for a while.

Very cool. Love Chicago. Also love the little bird flying away as the children fly in circles.

@Patricio Swayze-- Love the old farmhouse pic with the stone. Those  metal toys look straight out of Antiques Roadshow. Amazing bits and pieces of people's lives.

Thanks. I looked up those toys online and it looks like together they could fetch $350-400.
