  1. I think Tricia McLaughlin may be about to lose her job.
  2. Do you need the OCR so you can search and copy text? Or are you just trying to preserve some digital copy? I've scanned docs on my Android phone using the Google Drive scan capability. It's easy to do multiple pages and it saves the doc as a PDF. What I've found is that opening the PDF in Drive doesn't recognize the text. If I open the PDF in the Apple Preview app on my Mac, it does recognize the text and lets me search and copy. The free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader doesn't recognize the text, but I think the paid version would let me do that. So, scanning through Google Drive may work for you as long as you have the patience to scan each page.
  3. This guy has been here since he was 4 years old, he has a visa application in process and he's working as a firefighter. What are we even trying to accomplish by harassing people like this? It's crazy.
  4. I've been at my company for 20 years and we have always covered 100% of premiums on a top of the line health insurance plan, including contributions to employee HSAs. In 2025 premiums went up 25% and we managed to still cover everything. For 2026, BCBS demanded another 58% increase and we just can't do it anymore. We're switching carriers and pushing some of the premium to employees for the first time. This company really tries to treat people well and it sucks that costs have just made this impossible. I'm a little depressed.
  5. Is @Allen_Bernier a bot trying to build up post count? What's up with digging up multiple old threads and throwing out random advice?
  6. Da fuq you say?
  7. I understand the sentiment, but there's no quick win here and it's never too late to live your values.
  8. Yes, I hear you. Just to be clear, I was specifically suggesting that Texas Democratics should look to take action and make an impact privately, not through legislative/state action. Find ways to do good for people despite state failings.
  9. More of this
  10. I recognize that you're full of shit and not asking any of this in good faith, but I've been thinking for a while that there's something to this. If the Texas Democratic party (as an example) wants to build any type of support, they should focus on winning hearts and minds through practical action that actually improves people's lives. Words and rhetoric aren't going to move the needle. People aren't going to pay attention to abstract concerns about "fascism vs democracy" or finger pointing at Republicans. Instead they should focus on things like: Welfare checks, meals and other support for the elderly and disabled Providing books to kids (better yet, daycare, after school care, summer camp) City beautification efforts Honoring every single veteran in a visible way on Veteran's Day Recruiting and training CASA volunteers and foster parents Sponsoring sports leagues, teams and facilities for kids Providing free sex education resources and contraception These are just a few ideas off the top of my head. Some require a ton of resources. Some invite more controversy and criticism than others. But the point is to put the focus on things that matter to people. Don't try to fight fire with fire. The more the regime takes away, the more the opposition should step up and give away.
  11. Were Kimmel's comments more or less horrifying than this?
  12. Nothing Kimmel said was incorrect. He never said he thinks the shooter is MAGA. He said that MAGA was tripping over their dicks 5 seconds after the shooting, with no evidence, to point the finger at any other possibility than MAGA. He was 100% correct.
  13. Add Ball State to the list...
  14. Democrats getting a spine? Probably too much to hope for. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2025/sep/18/jimmy-kimmel-charlie-kirk-comments-show-cancelled-suspended-monologue-trump-us-politics-live?filterKeyEvents=false&page=with%3Ablock-68cc022e8f0816a4522bd35a#block-68cc022e8f0816a4522bd35a
  15. I missed this yesterday. Nice to hear some alternate voices. I don't know anything about the Interfaith Alliance. Is this a fairly sane, mainstream group? https://www.keranews.org/news/2025-09-17/interfaith-religious-freedom-schools-summit-texas
  16. There might be something to this as the unions are speaking out. https://www.newsweek.com/jimmy-kimmel-live-trump-abc-cancelled-fcc-free-speech-2131701
  17. I had forgotten about his January 6th involvement. I could totally see one of those convicted rioters turning on him. That's as good a guess as any.
  18. Huh, well that's interesting...
  19. You assertion that others take a more evidence based approach has no factual basis. You're just making things up. Sweden also doesn't recommend the flu vaccine for most people. They recommend it for those over 65 and for those in risk groups (i.e. underlying conditions). That's it. Whereas the US recommends the flu vaccine for anyone over 6 months of age unless there are contraindications. How do you explain the difference? Is it because the flu vaccine has become a political dogma in the US? Is it because we're wailing and gnashing out teeth? It is because we're ignoring evidence in the US? Give me an explanation and then juxtapose it with COVID. The reality is that we have the same evidence as Sweden and the rest of Europe regarding influenza and the flu vaccine, but we've made different policy decisions based on that evidence. The reasons the US recommends the flu vaccine for everyone and Sweden doesn't vary, but include: It's a simpler policy. If you're targeting young children, the elderly, pregnant women, high risk groups, etc. you're quickly getting to 70%+ of the population. At that point it's simpler to just suggest everyone get vaccinated so you don't have to worry about people parsing the guidance. Access is simpler in the US. When the US adopted this policy, vaccines were available in US pharmacies but that wasn't the case in lots of European countries where you had to visit the doctor to get a vaccine. The access restrictions impacted the European policies. Impact is different in the US. In the US, the vast majority of working adults do not received paid sick leave and will go to work even if they are sick. This is not the case in Sweden and other European countries. This means a virus will spread more easily in the US. So we put our dollars towards vaccines to prevent spread while Sweden puts their dollars towards sick leave. We have different public policy recommendations because we operate in different complex systems of public/private health with different tradeoffs in prevention, access, treatment, etc. It's reductive and misleading to claim one approach is "evidence based" and the other is not. I suspect you know that are attempting to mislead others intentionally.
  20. I had pulled the trigger on lodge rooms for spring break before realizing that the restaurant is closed up there. That's why there's so much availability. They have a food truck for lunch and the convenience store is open, but not restaurant for breakfast/dinner.
  21. So the suit was brought by criminal defendants asking that their cases be dismissed because Habba is not a legitimate AG. The judge said that neither Habba not anyone under Habba's authority can prosecute these cases, but the cases aren't dismissed. It's not clear if/how this actually leads to Habba being removed.
  22. And....she's gone again....maybe
