  1. 1. At the very least, that is one extra hurdle for someone to go through on their path to becoming a mass shooter. Maybe, just maybe, that homicidal 18-20 year old won’t have a person in their life who will agree to purchase a semi-automatic rifle for them, no questions asked. A lot of these shooters seem to be introverts who are acting in complete isolation. Even if that stops 1 shooting every 5 years, isn’t that worth it? 2. What is the downside to raising the age? Serious question. Are you honestly worried about 18-20 year olds not being able to get an AR-15? This same age group can’t be trusted to legally buy beer in this country, but we are concerned about their ability to get semi-automatic weapons?
  2. The Gun Owners thread seems like a perfectly reasonable place for people to discuss gun control, societal changes that might prevent mass shootings, or just express frustrations over the status quo of gun culture in our country. Let's take a completely different topic that people are also passionate about: DOGS. Now suppose in the future, psychopaths start training pit bulls and dobermans to attack people, and then the country suffers an epidemic of mass casualties where these attack dogs are being unleashed in schools, churches, and shopping centers on a weekly (daily?!) basis where they kill 5-20 people. And suppose dog owners everywhere circle the wagons and refuse to do anything about public policy that could potentially limit these attacks, and instead of discussing any meaningful change for the benefit of all responsible dog owners out there, they decide to give more money to the AKC who can then lobby politicians to prevent dog ownership standards from changing, and tweet out false platitudes like "Thoughts and prayers" every time a dog kills 9 people at H&M. Don't you think in that scenario (as ridiculous as it is, yet replace "dogs" with "guns" and "AKC" with "NRA" and here we are), that the My Dog is Awesome thread might experience a little bit of backlash and spillover from all the other people who are sick and tired of seeing dogs going on killing sprees on a daily basis? This hobby of gun ownership is long overdue for a change. I know it would be convenient for everyone who favors gun control to stay in the Cloak Room where you can ignore them, but it would also be convenient for the family members of 9 dead people if those people weren't, you know, dead. Maybe it's time for gun owners to acknowledge that there is a massive problem and start proposing some solutions, rather than doubling down on the status quo.
  3. People should have to look at it. If a majority of the voting citizens of this state are going to vote for government officials that refuse to do anything about this, then people should at least have to look at the carnage we created. If that’s too uncomfortable, or it leads to difficult conversations with young kids who also see it, then maybe people would make different choices about our elected officials.
  4. fwiw, without knowing all the specifics of this current strike, I tend to support the writers. I worked for a writer on one of the legacy daytime televesion shows years ago, and my experience there made me appreciate the creative writing process, even if I didn't have any interest in that particular television series. It was fun getting to see behind the curtain, how each script went from basically being an outline to an 80-page script with dialogue and details. I think it will be a sad moment in human history, possibly in the near future, when AI is used to replace human creativity in television, film, books, music, and art. What a depressing world that machines would be able to capture our imaginations better than our fellow humans can.
  5. It would seem to me that every purchase of a new firearm puts more money in the hands of the gun manufacturers to lobby against any version of gun control in this country. Buying a gun, regardless of what gun or what you plan to use it for, is essentially supporting the status quo. We will continue to see massacres like this because people like their guns too much. Am I wrong in this logic?
  6. Here's another one just for shits and grins: "Write a short story with dialogue about an old man fishing in the sea."
  7. Maybe you mean good dialogue, which I would probably agree, but it seems Chatgpt in it's current version is capable of writing dialogue. I just plugged in the following prompt: "Write a screenplay for a short film about a family getting a dog." This is what it gave me back:
  8. I had Tapit and Derma. Wife had Mage and Two Phils. It all goes to the same place so I’ll take it.
  9. Shut up man. The last thing we need is for Derka to appear in other threads. There is nothing else good on Apple+ and you should definitely cancel because it’s very overpriced at $6.99/month.
  10. Plus we have to look past the fact that his marriage was on the rocks and he chose that time in his life to move to another continent for 2-3 years. For all of Ted’s positives, he kinda left his family behind. Maybe his marriage was never going to recover, but it seems like he wanted to save it and he picked the least likely scenario for that to happen. Also, voluntarily choosing a situation that means watching your kid grow up via FaceTime - no one does that.
  11. I regretfully watched all of Extrapolations. It was surprisingly bad given the star power involved. I thought it would show the long term effects of climate change and how the world adapts and copes, but instead, it focused on small stories that felt like rejected Black Mirror scripts and only loosely touched on climate change. It was hyperfocused on these boring characters and plots and I kept wanting them to zoom out and give us a glimpse of the bigger picture, which they never did. Do not recommend.
  12. Loved the book and loved part 1. Can’t wait for this.
  13. For this next drill, we’re going to tie derka’s dick to hamsterhooka’s dick and put them in their own Ted Lasso thread.
  14. I was thinking one day on a charter boat with a captain and I’m open to ideas for which part of the island to focus on. I was also thinking a separate day on a zodiac boat that we cruise around ourselves. It looks like those boats are easy to get in the Gulf of Orosei, then Cala Goloritze is reachable from there. It has been at the top of my list since we first started thinking about Sardinia. I’m not a fan of any type of shared group tour so those activities are off the list. Also bought some Cannonau vino to help with the planning.
  15. Fair enough, it might actually enhance that beach.
  16. We would have a car to get around. We often like to charter a boat with a captain to take us around for a day. I assume we’ll attempt that for one day, but I see that renting the inflatable Zodiac boats is a common practice so we may do it that one day as well. Any experience with either of those? The eastern coastline looks gorgeous. Corsica was insanely beautiful. Thanks for the advice.
  17. I submitted the formal info to the police so they can let the DA file criminal charges. It wouldn’t get me any money but it would potentially punish her for being a thief and there’s justice in that. I told the package thief about this and initially she ghosted me for a week. I guess she thought I was bluffing or else wanted to take her chances with the legal system. Today she messaged back and agreed to pay me via Venmo. She doesn’t have the full amount but I agreed to accept it in 3 payments. If she follows through on that, I will drop the police charges.
  18. Have you ever been to a beach covered in sargassum? It's gross, it smells horrible, and it irritates your skin.
  19. Good deal. Didn’t realize you hadn’t seen a rheumatologist yet. That’s pretty critical for confirming the diagnosis and determining the best long term treatment. Hopefully the prednisone helps in the meantime.
  20. Sorry to hear about your situation. What is your question? Whether or not prednisone treatment is advisable? Prednisone can help a lot of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, but it also has side effects and risk. You mentioned having diabetes and one risk of prednisone is worsening blood sugar control. It would be up to your doctor to determine if the potential benefits of treatment justify the risks in your specific case. You mentioned having significant pain. Did your doctor offer any treatment recommendations for this?
  21. I went. They didn’t pick me but I went.
  22. I went. They didn’t pick me but I went.
  23. Anyone been? I searched and saw a single post from sidis. Thinking about going for the week leading up to Labor Day. Would plan to stay 7-8 nights and split in between 2 locations, probably up north around Costa Smeralda and then down south by Cagliari. We did something very similar in Corsica last summer and loved it. We’re thinking Sardinia is essentially the Italian version of that, which seems pretty close to perfect. Goals are to visit gorgeous beaches, eat delicious food, drink all the wine, and spend some time on a boat. Appreciate any recs along those lines.
  24. That was fantastic. Love the Jamie and Roy story that’s brewing. Two guys that hate each other quickly becoming buddies. And playing “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” during the bike scene was a perfect nod to Butch Cassidy.
  25. I filed a claim with Chase. Sounds like they may cover it but I’m sure the person that reviews claims is an expert in finding exclusions.
