  1. So, putting aside the structural managerial incompetence at Boeing due to a variety of reasons, mostly related to the short term demand of our capitalist system and regulatory capture, flying is, statistically speaking, literally one of the safest things you can do. It’s much, much, much more dangerous to be outside on a cloudy day.
  2. Brita.
  3. They are beefing up the fleet at Diego Garcia for whatever they are eventually going to do.
  4. It reminds me of Boy #1's admission's counselor: "Maryland is not a safety school. Have a back up option if that's your first choice, because I have kids crying in my office every March when they get rejected and haven't considered another 4 year school."
  5. As my wife and I joked when watching the two UW-UO games (and the Colorado game): That's a lot of Rich California kids who didn't get into their first choice UC school.
  6. It's all blow off from the impossible tight standards for UT (and A&M to a lesser degree). There is just an avalanche of fairly well off, fairly smart Texas kids that want to go to the Main Public State School, and if they can't get into Austin, they are going to look at Fayettville, Tuscaloosa, Oxford, etc instead of UT-D, Tech, UTSA, Houston.
  7. Yup. Kentucky offered Boy 1 guaranteed instate for 5 years, but they framed it around a merit offer. On the East Coast, it's hard to overstate how much New Jersey's lack of viable in state options past rutgers drives admissions and tuition prices. New Jersey kids form the core of most of the East Coast public and private school revenue.
  8. Depends on the school. Texas and Florida are notorious for encouraging in state students and being very hard on out of state applicants. Other schools, like Wisconsin, charge full freight for all out of staters, because they are a seller school and don't need to offer aid to get out of state attendees, but they still prefer instate kids as a mission. Maryland on the OTOH, lives and dies off of full freight NJ kids (as does Penn State), so they tend to be very fucking choosey about their instate acceptances. If you are a middling student from central NJ, getting into College Park is a breeze. If you are a high achiever from Montegomery County, Maryland, it's fucking brutal getting a yes from Maryland. They need that out of state money. For somewhere like Oregon, they literally can't get enough in state bodies to fill up UO and OSU, so they have to entice California, Texas, and Colorado kids with financial aid packages.
  9. I've got a 25 pack of Gillette silver blues and an old family handle I found in my parent's attic that has lasted me years. I went to razorblades when I was broke as fuck after my divorce and realized I could save money. Never went back. I use Headslick because I like it, but yeah, can cream is fine.
  10. Dude, I’m not calling him out, I was just telling an entertaining story about a time I met a Marine. He was a good dude and a hero, no doubt, and looked like he could fuck shit up. I was just noting it was not the preferred nomenclature even 25 years ago. Maybe dont take offense at everything you read.
  11. The problem with the 38 is they had all sorts of aerodynamic issues when diving because they were so fast, which meant they had to be throttled back in combat, allowing the Germans to feast on them when escorting bombers. They could climb, but not dive. P-47s had the opposite problem: They could dive but not climb (because they were so large and heavy).
  12. “I’ve watched every Super Bowl, including the 9 where the Patriots had the league’s best quarterback, Tom Brady. He was also dating a super famous hot girl. I also watched the one with the Bucs! But I’m out on this Super Bowl because I’m tired of Pat Mahomes/Travis Kelce/Taylor Swift!”
  13. Just a quick reminder: states in rebellion will not be allowed to participate in national elections. Abraham Lincoln out front shoulda told ya.
  14. Also, there’s some pretty strong thought that modern cuckoldry is form of male domination depending on how it’s practiced and consent/lack there of.
  15. Gotdamn the L1011 were badass motherfuckers. It's a pity they couldn't make the economics work. An engineers plane.
  16. To me, unless he is physically in jail at the time of swearing in, and that somehow physically prevents him from taking office, it's a non-factor. There is no Peak Trump.
  17. Just make sure you squeeze a little loctite on the bolts before you re torque em.
  18. I don't see how they would let Boeing fail. I'm not arguing the merits, I'm just saying, they didn't let Chrysler fail. And Chrysler sucks. But yes, I would think the shareholders would be slaughtered and new management would come forth. The real loser here is SWA. They are really staring at the abyss.
  19. What's wild about what United is saying, and I've heard this elsewhere: People don't want 737's. They actually want Airbuses, but the delay in airframe delivery due to demand forces people into buying new 737's, or they are rejiggering their lineups to more of a tiered play system, instead of a do it all 737-Max and a 777 for international. American recently announced they are getting more Embraer's to be their regional carriers. All of which is ironic: The pre McDonnell Douglas Boeing sort of set up the tiered Airline model: 737 for your regional jumps, 757 for your long domestics. 767 for your cross country/short international, 777 for your global, 747 for heavy global/superlong haul to the southern hemisphere. The 747 became obsolete when the new GE engines could allow 777 to do the same thing for much cheaper.
  20. Marc Thiessen, who I generally think is a tool, makes a good point about Trump 2.0: Right now, it's basically a TruthSocial/Inside the Beltway/Talking Heads thing. Once Americans, who have no real passion for Biden(and never really did), but aren't actually following the race beyond the headlines, get a full fall of this version of Trump, with the belligerent, incoherent rants, saying he's going to become a dictator, his gross, disheveled physical appearance, etc. a lot of tired, unenthusiastic voters are going to remember why they voted against him in 2020.
  21. Of course the flip is Straight Male Friend :
  22. Having just watched a family member pass away alone, I can 100% state now that I have more in the rear view mirror than in front: I prioritize true companionship with a life partner with strong health care power of attorney over wild kinky shit 10/10 times.
