  1. December 27, 2018 10:39 PM (ABC 6 News) -- The Austin City Council Thursday approved an approximately 40 percent pay raise for council members and the mayor, the first pay increase for both in nearly two decades. The city cited a number of studies showing council member pay lagged behind comparable positions in similar-sized cities across Minnesota. As of 2016, the study said, Austin's mayor made $3,000 less than his counterpart in Albert Lea. Since 2001, council members have been paid $6,600 annually for their work; that will jump to $9,300. The council member-at-large will see a pay increase from $7,800 to $10,800 and the mayor's pay will jump from $9,000 to $12,600. Council member Laura Helle, who voted yes to the plan, said it was proposed by a number of council members who are leaving their seats next month, meaning they will not themselves see the increase. "I feel that the job that the council members and mayor do is an important job, it takes time and we want people in those elected offices to be compensated fairly," Helle said. The pay increase will take effect on January 1, 2021.

  3. I've got a Pit Boss and it has a sliding plate that will either expose the fire pot for searing or close for an indirect/smoking option. Don't think the other brands have this option.
  4. All that legal stuff just to serve cafeteria food and square fish.
  5. ^^ I'd eat that. Looks good.

I know there's not much rain in the forecast but plan on going on a rainy day and there will be less people in the line.
  7. I was introduced to spam as a kid in the 60's and thought the fried spam sandwich my mom served me was great. I asked her if we could have this more often and she said nope. My dad hated the stuff since he had to eat so much of it when he was in WWII.
  8. Damn. That's a lot of marbling. did you eat the whole thing your self? I googled and those things are pricey. Also this. I think the Japanese don't eat steaks like we do.
  9. Adler gets private security. I'm sure that's not free: The department’s three-person executive protection unit, which provides Adler’s security, would transition to private security officers, as would Municipal Court security.
  10. Using a Pit Boss 700.
  11. How long can your pellet smoker run before the ash builds up in the burn pot and has a "burn out"? I'm using B&B post oak pellets and did a brisket last night at 225 and a little after 12 hours I lost heat and the post mortem inspection reviled the burn pot was overflowing with pellets. Guess the pot couldn't take all of the ash. Good news is the brisket was right at 202 and came out great.

Where did this come from? awesome.
  13. Great pics Judge! That was a great trip.
  14. Planet is showing us a worthy effort.
  15. Are those crispy taco shells? Bold move.
  16. Old location of Capitol Oyster Bar back in the 70's and 80's.
  17. Hey @deej that was a good find, and I remember that lifestyle around Austin in the 70's and 80's. The film mentioned that David was an actor in Austin and he looks like the liquor store clerk in Dazed and confused. In my years at McCallum in the late 70's some of our lunch place rotations would include Knight a Burger, Stallion, 2J's, Dart Bowl, Ol' Hickory BBQ, Holiday House, Top Notch, Pancho's, and of course the Taco Bell and Long john Silvers on Burnet Rd. were very popular. In the early 80's the popular drinking hangouts were the Side Pocket, 183 Cue Club, Silver Dollar and the Lumber yard. Sixth Street was just beginning to become popular.
  18. So what type of pellets are y'all using? I grabbed a bag of B&B post oak from academy and my ribs turned out pretty good. Anyone tried the competition blend?
  19. I bought a Pit Boss 700 grill last weekend, did some pig ribs and was very pleased with the amount of smoke. They say these things get more smoke with lower temperatures so I cooked at 225F.
  20. I picked up the Pit Boss Classic 700 this afternoon. I feel a little ashamed because I've been rolling with a offset stick burner for over 20 years, but I guess I've gotten a little lazy and also willing to see what this new technology can do. I did the first burn in tonight and will do some pig ribs tomorrow. Got post oak pellets and plan to run at 225 or 250.
  21. What temps do y'all smoke at with a pellet? From what I've read you get less smoke with a higher cooking temp. If you are cooking beef ribs at 300 you wouldn't get as much smoke as if you cooked them at 225. Also, the Pit Boss has a setting for "smoke" but it's only 180, that might be good for an hour or so but at some point you've got to crank it up to 225 or 250.
  22. I was in Galveston on Sunday and can confirm it was a shit show.

Any updates on good places to eat around Galveston? I'm headed down soon and the places I've enjoyed in previous years were Bennos, Cajun Greek, Black Pearl and Shrimp and Stuff. And if it's dog friendly that would be a plus. I think there are a couple of guys on this board that live in the area.
  24. Jeff from Hawaii could do his own show. I'd watch.
