  1. Dang! Nailed it! Here’s the recipe straight from Feast of Santa Fe cookbook:
  2. This is same situation in eastern Oklahoma. Worse when I hunt out by Ponca City on the Salt Fork River. The deer have soybeans, milo, corn, and winter wheat for miles and miles. They look at a feeder and scowl “poor peasant”. Muy grandes out there though…
  3. You’re making me hungry. I’m especially hungry for this as I’m in Kansas City freezing my ass off at present…GCS would hit the spot.
  4. Leftover turkey and andouille sausage gumbo went down tonight. Roux was dark but broth lightened it up more than I would have thought. Still damn good.
  5. Lane looks like such a douche. Leach is someone who looks like he would keep me entertained for long periods of time shooting the shit. W
  6. Deer camp Thanksgiving, is the best Thanksgiving!
  7. Here ya go: So easy and so good. Hominy is a misunderstood side dish.
  8. No full spread but the recipe for Perini Ranch Green Chili Hominy kicked serious ass. New item on the rotation.
  9. Here’s an excellent older article on the .257: https://www.shootingtimes.com/editorial/ammunition_st257weatherbymagnum_031706/100524
  10. Mine is the old Sub-MOA Vanguard. I walked in to Sportsman’s Warehouse up in Round Rock in 2008 or so, when they were closing. Completely unplanned but best gun purchase I’ve ever made. I’ve got a decent scope but I should upgrade to some really nice glass as it’s all I shoot now. I’ve got multiple .308s, Sako .270, .243, and others but Vanguard .257 is my go-to.
  11. .257 has never let me down. Laser beam.
  12. First time hunting back in Oklahoma in about a decade in one of my old spots. No bueno last night but beautiful evening hunting around the shores of Lake Tenkiller.
  13. Nice. I used to hunt with my dad west of Hulah Lake. The bluestem country grows big deer.
  14. That’s a bummer if the 1178 is discontinued. I’ll check with the Red Wing store near my house in Tulsa and see if they know anything. I still got a couple of pairs but one is in dire need of resole as well.
  15. Mecos are so damn good. That should be awesome in chili. Chipotle meco salsa my favorite salsa.
  16. I buy mine at whatever local grocery that specializes in Hispanic foods. In Austin, El Rancho Mercado had excellent selection. Morelos, Fiesta, others should have everything you need.
  17. Lynn Hejtmancik 1988 Terlingua recipe going down in cold, rainy, blustery Tulsa tonight. Only change I make is adding two cans of Original Rotel with chili being about a dozen Guajillo, half dozen Ancho, and two morita chipotles. Hejtmancik recipe has been my go-to recipe for years. Unfortunately, no fresh jalapeño or serranos in the fridge to float tonight.
  18. This monster 8 point used to lounge around our hood a few years ago. I’d be 4-1/2 hours away in Shackelford County, freezing my ass off in a stand and my wife would text me photos of this deer lying around the yard and “you should have stayed home”.
  19. I’ve got an 8quart cast iron that’s my go-to gumbo pot for years (decades…olddds). I was thinking about adding a large pot for gatherings (Holidays, Mardi Gras). Come on up…bring some crawfish…
  20. A question for the Magnalite devotees - which model is your preferred gumbo pot? 13 quart, 17 quart or other?
  21. If you’ve got something strong and substantial to hang your deer from, you can pull the skin off with a jeep or four wheeler by tying a rope and gently reversing away from deer. You’ve got to have a strong enough support that there isn’t much give and as already mentioned, it always easier if deer isn’t cold. First, with deer hanging from strong support - cut the skin around the neck and pull down enough to put a rock behind the skin - something big enough to get a rope behind/around and tied off. Tie the other rope end to the bumper of truck, jeep, four wheeler and reverse slowly and ease away from deer carcass with deer pulling away at roughly 45 degree angle. If you’ve got a buddy there, have him help the skin off with a skinning knife as the hide is peeling off (again, slow and easy). The above probably sounds complicated and possibly unsafe but if done gently, you can have a deer skinned in a few minutes with virtually no effort. I’ve skinned dozens upon dozens of deer this way over the years with no mishaps aside from knot coming loose from the deer that required repeating the process. Slow and easy like a Don Williams song…
  22. PSA San Angelo is a Mecca for Mexican Burgers https://texashighways.com/travel-news/san-angelo-mecca-mexican-burgers/?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Web+Story
  23. I’m jealous boys. In my thirty years in Texas, there’s not much more I enjoyed than trips to our leases or various ranches of friends in the Hill Country or northwest Texas. Pic from a couple of years ago rolling up 71 headed to Shackelford County. Deer season in Texas and all the peripheral activities that it entails, has no peer.
  24. Not Texas HS ball but Jenks beat Bixby tonight in Bixby. Game was televised on ESPN2 and Jenks ended Bixby national longest win streak at 58 wins. Best I can tell, my old hood Westlake Chaps are now owners of nation’s longest winning streak.
  25. Nashville Hot CFS. I’m definitely in. Someone make it happen. Best guess was a traditional hollandaise sauce with some chili powder. It was delicious.
