  1. You can hear that music numerous ways, but those framed 78's are a thing of beauty and a memory of your mother and grandfather. Display them proudly.
  2. I'm not trying to be a dick here...actually I don't have to try, it just comes naturally. Anyhow, I don't think you can make a comparison here, that is original vs. cover. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, but Stevie had years, if not decades to refine and rethink the covers. Jimi had only 2-3 years and was mostly involved in touring and writing new stuff. You can hear some evolution in Jimi's versions when you listen to various versions in various releases...especially live bootlegs. Stevie had more time...although regrettably way too little.
  3. No worries. It's not run of the mill construction grade plywood. It is nicer wood that is a veneer on top of cheaper wood. Cheaper old guitars like Kay and Silvertone...maybe some lower end Epiphones. I call it plywood, but I guess more correctly it is veneer. I watch a bunch of repair work by the guy at Rosa String Works and he calls it "plywood". I think maybe the more correct term would be laminate. Either way, these guitars have more than one type of wood on the top, and sometimes the back and sides. The old Danelectro guitars were made of Masonite and, I think, were semi-hollow body.
  4. Okay, never mind. It's not sawn. It's "shaved" by a highly sharp lathe so no sawdust or waste is created. Back to the guitar pron.
  5. I'm talking about acoustic guitars. Look at repairs on youtube, neck resets and intonation fixes, and they often determine if the top is solid or plywood. I guess my thinking is that the amount of sawdust created in cutting a thin ply would almost amount to another piece of wood...the sawdust. I will look at plywood production during my exercise time tomorrow. That might answer my question.
  6. Dumb question amnesty, please. I watch guitar repair videos on youtube while I'm on the treadmill and they keep talking about plywood guitars. I knew this was a thing, but never really thought about it. If they are going to cut a thin sheet of "good" wood to ply on to a sheet or two of "bad" wood, how much of the good wood goes to waste as sawdust when they rip it? I've never studied the process of making plywood, but I'm thinking you gain very little in cost savings when you rip a piece of mahogany or whatever into a dozen sheets of ply. Seems like you'd have as much sawdust as you would if you just used a whole piece. As I type this I think the question is answering itself, but I'll go ahead and submit.
  7. See, this is what worries me. How does a semi-experienced coach suddenly have so many brain farts. It's not about the score. It's about Tom looking like he had a stroke and forgot everything he knew about football. Not wanting to argue, just expressing where my hand wringing is coming from
  8. So, a spin move is a stunt?
  9. Okay, I'm going to open myself up to the "ask your husband" comments, but whatever. What is a "stunt" (use small words), and haven't these guys seen some form of stunt since middle school? Isn't there some kind of adjustment that can be made once it becomes obvious that the stunts are coming. I assume that a stunt is something of a gamble iow there must be some down side to using them...leaving a hole where there was none before...some down side. Can't adjustments be made to take advantage of the down side?

  11. So you're saying smegma popsickles? Whatever happened to that guy?
  12. It gives me happiness to think that I can give something to my children to enrich their lives or to make their lives easier than mine. If they show a history of supporting themselves and not being leaches on society I have no problem leaving them something.
  13. Small degree of "unshrinking", but not much. Steamer relaxes the fibers, iron "pulls up" the fibers.
  14. I know I will catch shit for this, but...my grandson had similar issues. Smart kid, lovable 99% of the time, but when frustrated about sports/school/whatever he had what we called "melt downs". Total over reaction to the situation. He had a tendency to to get very absorbed in whatever he was doing and wouldn't take time out to eat. "Forcing" him to have a snack helped, but not completely. It was getting to the point that other kids would set him up just for the "fun" of watching him explode. We all, his parents/grandparents/etc. hated and delayed putting him on Ritalin, but once it was tried as a "last resort" it has made all the difference in the world. We are still very cautious about doses and giving him medication holidays, but the improvement in his life simply can't be denied. I was very resistant and skeptical, but the results are obvious. Start with calories, and therapy is a good idea, but also consider the stimulant medications.
  15. Steamer okay on synthetic or synthetic blends. Fair on 100% cotton dress shirts. Good on 100% cotton Polo style shirts. Steamer will not give "crisp" look that iron gives. Hand held holds about enough water to do one garment so there is much down time refilling, therefore floor model much better for home use. Hand held okay for taking out suit case wrinkles when traveling. Distilled water makes more steam and doesn't clog up the unit. tl/dr: Steamer faster and easier than ironing if you don't need that "crisp" look.
  16. I own probably 2000 lps and maybe 1000 cds. Tens of thousands of songs, but not one Dolly Parton song. Occasionally I've wondered why. Watching last night's episode I discovered the reason. As soon as she started singing, I started weeping, and couldn't stop. From Muleskinner Blues to I Will Always Love You the tears flowed. She opens her mouth, and out comes the breath of God. It's simply a beauty which is more than I can handle.
  17. Got it. I would also say that UT did not want to make any more comment because, in taking the high ground, they could avoid insulting the coach of another team.
  18. Whether released just for the hell of it, or because of foia it is still released by The University of Texas. What difference does it make?
  19. I got a gadget on Amazon that is essentially two solar powered red lights about the size of a fox or wolf pupil. They come on intermittently. So far it's working, but I imagine they get used to it sooner or later.
  20. If any advertiser announced "This moment of silence brought to you by (insert business name here)" I would support their business regularly. Humm..."Surlyhorns brings you this moment of silence." I'd contribute.
  21. How long does it take to freeze the 5 gallons? Sounds like a good idea.
  22. I'm an old. Very little profit in me taking on a challenge to fisticuffs.
  23. Actually millenials tend to embrace slow food, local produce, reusable containers and carry reusable water containers everywhere. I know a few that carry resusble cutlery. I believe you are talking about Hipsters, of which a few are millenials. I, an admitted old, have been accused of being a Hipster.
