  1. Yes, I'm willing to cut them some slack (talking management, not the line workers who should get all the praise). I get that you can't identify every branch that could possibly affect a power line. And I get the cost prohibitive ideas to bury power lines. But I'm exhausted by the predictability of it all and the waiting for someone to take charge. For example, the line that runs behind our house for four blocks routinely loses power -- either a transformer that blows or some other age-related excuse. Sometimes AE fixes it within an hour with what appears to be a band-aid; many times it's days. The neighborhood association asks AE and our Council Member for help getting trees trimmed and equipment updated. Sure, we'll look into it, they say. Like many of life's ills, the best medicine is prevention. Yet it feels like this is mostly just a slowly reactive agency. Yes, budget. Yes, staffing. But no vision or plan.
  2. At this rate, I question whether Austin Energy even has a plan other than "get in line." After 13+ hours of no power (and checking the family into a hotel because we've learned our lesson), we just got a text informing us that "there may be an outage affecting our address," and asking us to report if the power is still out. Oh, wait... So I'm thankful that the family is safe and warm in a hotel room for the night, but I know many are not as fortunate. WTF are we doing? It's 2023, and we can't proactively mitigate tree limbs crippling the city? We can't expect accurate and timely information from the utility that has many of us by the balls? I'll return to my hotel wine and see myself out.
  3. Booking a hotel room. Zero chance we get power back before dark.
  4. I think Cronk gets too much of a pass. He was hired to bring to Austin what he got done in Minneapolis: effectively end single-family zoning. We all know what a total shitshow the Land Development Code rewrite attempts have been and how divisive his and his allies' approach is. That's been almost his entire focus, although he's responsible for managing city operations. Issues with APD, the homeless population problems, and ABIA power outages and non-TSA/FAA staffing problems are just a few recent examples of his incompetent management skills. The buck should stop with him but that motherfucker just got rewarded with a raise. He needs to go.

    London

I agree on the Mayfair Chippy rec. Another good one close by is Delfino Mayfair on Mount St. Really good pizza -- and still my kids' very favorite Thanksgiving meal ever.
  6. This one is my favorite. What in the actual fuck?
  7. Double fucking coverage, loser
  8. Save the trip to Monterey for another time because 17-Mile Drive and some the piers look jacked up. Plenty of good suggestions above to keep you busy for a weekend visit to the area. Ghirardelli Square is good for kids. You can catch the Powell/Hyde Cable Car from nearby.
  9. While the Idaho officials are keeping things tight, a few details are starting to leak from the PA authorities and others, including the allegation that he stalked these girls for weeks. He was also a creep to women who worked at a brewery and rejected his advances. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11589659/Bryan-Kohberger-went-teaching-University-Idaho-murders.html
  10. This x1000. My least favorite aspect of what Austin has become: new people who are hell-bent to change Austin into the place they left. Some chick told me a few years ago with a straight face that Austin dining and shopping got so much better once so many New Yorkers started to move here. Fuck. Off. And yes, I know Austin has always had the "it used to be so much better before all these people moved here" attitude, and maybe it's just a function of me getting older, but it's exhausting listening to new Austinites lecture us about everything that needs to be different to suit their preferences. I've also been thinking about our exit for a few years now. Once the kids are finished with school and we're ready to retire, peace out.

  12. And why the fuck not
  13. I feel like I could fill up a page, but here are three from this week: HEB not accepting Apple Pay. Associates cc-ing themselves on every fucking email they send me. Dude, if you really can't stay organized enough to not need two copies of every fucking email you send, then bcc yourself. Waiters who offer to "curate" a menu for me. I can read and pick from the handy sheet that the hostess gave me when I sat down, asshole.
  14. First flight out the day after TG is a breeze, but agree on Christmas. No thank you.
  15. Love's Labor Lost Wasn't even close to parenthood when that episode aired, but holy shit that one stuck with me.
  16. Wrapping up a week in NYC (first visit in about 10 years and first with kids), so here it goes: Yup, the smell of weed is everywhere. Haven't read the article quoted above, but I was surprised how prevalent it was. Maybe I shouldn't have been, but whatever, it's definitely a thing. I'll save the rest of my thoughts for another day on a different board. Here were our highlights with kids (15 and 12) in tow: Dinner at BXL -- dug the vibe, and the staff was great Sunday brunch at Balthazar La Ferrara Bakery on Mulberry (went back for more rainbow cookies a few days later) The Met The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular Momofuku Noodle Bar -- perfect pre-theater dinner Funny Girl -- Lea Michele killed it Polo Bar -- pain in the ass to get a reservation, but it was so worth it We also did the Macy's parade (watched a lot from Essex House lobby) and Empire State Building observation decks. Prob not as good as the Summit One rec'd above, but the kids wanted to do ESB because of Elf, so there you go. Again, thanks to @PenelopeWitherspoon, @The Ace of Aces, and others I know I'm missing for so many solid recommendations.
  17. He's damn sure not gonna risk taking a body shot by extending for a catch over the middle. He's made that pretty clear this season. Agree JWhitt should be #1 target.
  18. Night started off with poor timing. Felt like the band came out late, maybe because of the parachutes, team came running out before the intro bells finished and the song build up, and the pre-kick off Texas-Fight goes away for the hype video. Then the volume seemed way louder than usual. I'm not an old fogey, but holy shit, I couldn't hear the people next to me. And for the love of God why have we not moved on from Bob Cole. Cronkite can stay so long as that MF is still polluting the stadium.
  19. "You're from... uh... Texas."
  20. Nope. The camp under the I-35/Airport overpass looks like it's never been cleaned out -- which it actually was once or twice after the camping ban went into effect. Maybe the downtown camps are cleaned out, but other open and obvious ones around town are thriving.
  21. Well, we know lists don't work for them.

    QB Slide Rule

Bingo. Once the QB crosses the line of scrimmage, he's like any other ball carrier. Run out of bounds if you don't want to get hit. This is an interesting compromise.
